A Fresh Start

This just explains how Clara gets her job at Coal Hill and includes her first day, as seen in "Deep Breath."

Let's just set this to go . . . *triggers countdown and runs*

OK! I'm ready! Enjoy!

"There you go," Jessie nodded as she watched Clara do new laps around the training room, including certain twists in midair that she hadn't been able to do before, able to launch onto other surfaces from those new positions. "You're better now. This is impressive, Clara."

"I feel better, too," Clara ran to the wall, jumped onto it, and propelled herself into a spin, landing on the ceiling. "Much better."

"Brilliant," Jessie smiled at her as Clara did a somersault in midair, jumping off the ceiling and landing in a crouch on the ground. "Good to hear it, Absolute Zero."

"Not too much, is it?" Clara asked nervously.

"I think it's fine," Jessie promised. "And if you think it's too much, you can just go by Zero, like we call Natasha Widow sometimes."

"OK," Clara nodded as she accepted the water bottle handed to her. "I think I can do that."

"Now, here's what I want to know," Jessie led her to a bench to sit down. "What else do you want to do?"

"What?" she blinked.

"Well, you just went through my time tunnel, saved my life, and came out Inhuman," Jessie shrugged. "I imagine after going through that, you might want something different than being with the Maitlands."

"Well," Clara said slowly. "I still want to work with kids."

"Then work with kids somewhere else," Jessie suggested. "Think about it. What would you want to do with kids?"

Clara considered, then decided, "Teach."

"What subject?"

"English," Clara answered, then paused and narrowed her eyes. "Why?"

"No reason," Jessie said innocently.

"Welcome to Coal Hill, Miss Oswald."

"Thank you," Clara smiled at the secretary at the secondary school, mentally snorting. No reason, my arse, Bad Wolf.

She had been searching for jobs on the Internet when a call had suddenly come from the Chairman of the Governors of Coal Hill Secondary School, one Ian Chesterton. He had said that "an old friend" had hinted that he knew an incredible English teacher that was looking for a job, and he had asked if she was interested in a position. The moment Clara had called the Time Lords, the Doctor had acted all innocent, but the Bad Wolf had never said anything. Pietro told her later that she had been smirking the entire time.

Clara just shook her head as she walked to her new classroom, taking a deep breath and preparing for her first day. She unlocked the door and turned the lights on, looking around at what she had put up. Mr. Chesterton had given her a few days to set up her classroom and recommend what other teachers were doing in their curriculum, and Clara had gone from there. She had occasionally cheated and made sure the door was blocked before climbing onto the walls to finish setting up specific details that couldn't be accomplished otherwise. She was proud of her bulletin boards, and she was ready to go. She took a look at her watch, seeing she had about half an hour before school started, and she sat down in her chair, taking deep breaths.

Abruptly, her school phone went off, and frowning, she picked up. "Miss Oswald."

"Well, listen to you, settled in already," Pietro's voice laughed, and she smiled in relief. "Don't you have time before school starts?"

"I wanted to be here to make a good impression," Clara answered. "Are the rest of you there?"

"Hello!" the Doctor's overly hyper voice answered.

"We're all here," Wanda answered.

"And Bad Wolf, I have a bone to pick with you," Clara accused playfully. "No reason? Really?"

"You deserve this, Clara," the Bad Wolf told her. "Helping you get a job is the least I can do after you jumped into my timestream. Call it a thank you present."

"Well, you're welcome," Clara smiled, opening her marking book to look over names. "I think I'll enjoy this."

"I hope you do. We were hoping during your lunch break, unless you find another teacher to eat with, we could ask you about how it went your first day."

"I'd love to," Clara answered. "Might take away from the stress of school. I don't know if I'll meet another teacher I'd like to sit with right away, but if I do, I'll let you know."

"Good luck, Clara," Wanda wished.

"Yeah, good luck!" the Doctor pitched in.

"Love you, Clara," Pietro added.

Clara smiled. "Love you, too," she said.

"Remember, you're a superhero now, even if you're not out there saving people on Earth yet," the Bad Wolf reminded her. "These kids should be a piece of cake."

"Yeah," Clara smiled. "I hope so."

"Good luck."

Clara hung up the phone and took a deep breath, wringing out her neck. "I've faced the Great Intelligence, an Ice Warrior, Cybermen, and the Wicked Witch of the Well," she talked to herself. "I can do this." She nodded, walking over to the door to open it, allowing students to come in when they started arriving. "I can do this."

"All right, stop!" Clara shouted, panicking as she tried to regain control of her class, all of the students laughing at her and acting ridiculous. "Stop! Stop it, all of you, now!"

"Ha ha!" one of the boys taunted. "It's her first day!"

"If you don't stop it, I'm going to have each and every single one of you kicked out of this school!" Clara threatened, so desperate by this point that she didn't see one teacher walk by, do a double take, and look in through the window in the door.

"Go on, then," a dark-skinned girl, Courtney Woods, glared at her. "Do it."

Clara faltered, swallowing and trying to figure out how she could recover from this -

When the door banged open, making all of them look towards the door. "And what if I were to say that, Miss Woods?" the blonde teacher that had been outside asked quietly with narrowed eyes, walking into the room like she owned it. Clara believed she could have as the woman leaned down in front of Courtney, her dark eyes locking on Courtney's now terrified ones. "Do you believe I would do it then?"

Courtney swallowed. "But, miss - "

"I don't want to hear it," she shook her head, standing up and walking to the front of the room. "I do not want to hear one single word against your teacher ever again. I don't care if you ever have a substitute, a real teacher, or just an aide. You never, ever disrespect someone like that again. So I am going to sit in here for the rest of this lesson, and if I hear one single peep out of any one of you again, unless your teacher asks for you to . . . " The blonde pulled out Clara's desk chair and sat down in it, crossing her legs and folding her arms, narrowing her eyes over the speechless class. She wasn't in dress clothes like Clara or the other teachers were; instead, she was in blue jeans and a black camisole tank top, a white sweater jacket tied around her waist. She still managed to look more intimidating than any other teacher Clara had met so far. "Well, someone isn't going to like the outcome, and I guarantee I'll love it." Every member of the class nodded rapidly. "Wonderful," the teacher turned to Clara. "If you will?"

Clara swallowed, then started to speak again, growing more confident as the teacher turned to keep an eye on the class. They never made a single word the rest of the period.

Clara finished just before the bell rang, and she jumped when every student leapt to their feet. "Sit down!" the blonde barked, and all of them froze. "I don't recall your teacher giving you permission to leave, do you?" They all slowly sat, Clara watching in amazement. "Now, you all are going to wait for your teacher to allow you to leave, just like every teacher expects you to. You are all going to behave the right way, as you did when I had to sit in. One more act like this morning when I caught you, and I swear, none of you will like what I do. And ask Miss Woods, she can vouch for me." Clara was surprised when the black girl nodded, and the blonde looked at Clara. "After you."

"Right," Clara nodded slowly. "I've given you your homework. Get it done for tomorrow." She took inspiration from the teacher and added, "If anyone doesn't get it done, I will personally tell your parents what happened this morning. Go." The students practically ran for the door. Clara watched them go, then turned to look in amazement at the blonde teacher as she stood. "You are incredible."

"I remember my first day," she nodded. "Wasn't my best, but I learned that the only way to get the students to respect me was to let them know I really would do what I said I would. Any time I catch them misbehaving, I make them do laps. Any time I catch them disrespecting someone, I have them do a workout in front of the entire class."

"So you're the PE teacher," Clara guessed.

"That's me," she nodded, heading for the door as a few more students started piling in, all of them looking at her in surprise. "Tell you what, anyone else gives you trouble, send them right to me. I'll deal with them today. Maybe I'll show you a few tricks of the trade, too."

"Thank you," Clara said genuinely.

"You're welcome," she smiled at her. "And if you need someone to sit by at lunch, I'll show you the fields."

"I'll take you up on that," Clara nodded.

"Have a good morning, Miss Oswald," the blonde nodded and headed out the door.

"Hang on!" Clara called just before she was out the door. "What was your name?"

"Yeah, that would help," the blonde turned with a tongue in teeth grin. "I'm Rose. Rose Tyler. Nice to meet you, Clara Oswald."
