5. Time For Fun
Lia exited the apartment building by Namjoon's side, looking over at him and the brown leather satchel he had thrown over one shoulder. Before either of them had left the building, Namjoon had made his way back across the hall to his apartment to grab it. Lia continued to watch as Namjoon took off the mask, sunglasses and hat as they walked, shoving them inside the satchel.
"I have a few questions," said Lia, causing Namjoon to look over at her.
"Oh?"
"First off, why do you wear a disguise within the apartment building but not outside?"
"To prevent any of the neighbors from catching on," said Namjoon. "If they catch on and tell the land lord that it looks like there are seven people living next door instead of one, our rent will go up. We can barely afford to hang on as it is. Outside the apartment - as long as we're far enough away - it doesn't matter if people see our face."
"Okay, I guess."
"You don't like the answer?"
"It's just...It's sad really, but moving on. Question two," she said holding up two fingers for Namjoon to see clearly as if that would get some necessary point across, "Why don't you just pay your bills online?"
Namjoon shrugged.
"Personal preference, I guess. I like getting out since I only do it once a week technically."
Lia laid off the questions after; the two of them falling into silence. She looked over at Namjoon once in a while as they walked, wondering when he'd ask her a question in return but he never did. Within what felt like seconds they were standing outside the magazine company Exposure. As she stood outside the place she had just gotten her job offer from, Lia felt a whole new wave of nausea wash over her. Namjoon looked over at her, reaching into his satchel for a moment before digging out a necklace. He held it out to her.
"What's this?"
"It's from Jungkook. It was bundled into the note he left. I think he wants you to have it at least for today."
Lia looked at the necklace that now lay in the palm of her hand. The string of it was a simple, made up of tiny silver beads. Dangling off the necklace string was a silver guitar pick with the initials 'JJK' on it. She was speechless for a moment as she just stared at it in the palm of her hand.
"Here let me help you."
Namjoon moved to tempoararily take the necklace back from her. He stood behind her, gently looping it around her neck before fastening it.
"Jungkook doesn't trust easily," said Namjoon softly when he pulled back, moving to stand in front of her again. "That necklace means a lot to him, so the fact that he is letting you wear it...we need to talk more after this. I didn't want to make you nervous before your first day by asking you a lot of questions now."
"I don't know how I can't be nervous now with this about my neck," whispered Lia, looking down at it; her fingertips ghosting over the silver pick's surface.
"Use it as your strength. Think that he's with you in spirit," said Namjoon with a small smile. "I'll be back in about an hour. You've got this."
Lia nodded, watching as Namjoon left her then. She took a deep breath, staring up at the face of the building for a moment before forcing herself to step in past the doors.
To say that the first day was a disaster was putting it mildly. Lia supposed she was classifying it as a disaster in her head simply because of her level of anxiety. Her new co-workers at the magazine had welcomed her in with open arms, but at the same time, they expected a lot from her at once as the new assistant receptionist. She found there were a couple times throughout the day where her fingers would stray to fiddle with the necklace she was wearing. As her fingers traced the engraving of the letters, she found herself able to calm back down.
Even though her shift wasn't over in an hour, she noticed that Namjoon was back within that time frame like he had promised. As she worked, she could see him sitting in front of the windows in the waiting room with a white jacketless book in his hands. There were a few times where a receptionist would ask him if he needed anything to which Namjoon always replied he was waiting for someone.
During Lia's break, she walked over to him with a white paper cup filled to the brim with coffee. She didn't know how he took it (if he even liked coffee), so she had a fistful of individual creamers and sugar in her other hand. Namjoon was still intently reading the book as she walked over to him; not looking up until she cleared her throat.
"I brought you coffee," said Lia. "Thought you might be thirsty."
"You didn't bring one for yourself?"
"No. I figure it will come back up if I try to drink some now."
She moved to sit in the waiting room chair beside him as he put his book on the small magazine table beside him, taking the coffee from her.
"I didn't flavor it at all because I don't know how you like it," said Lia as she moved to unfurl her clenched fist to reveal the creamer and sugar gifts inside.
"You didn't have to do all this," said Namjoon as he gently popped the lid off the paper cup before taking a creamer and sugar to mix inside.
"Well, it's my fault you're sitting here all day."
"Technically it's Jungkook's fault if we're blaming anyone," remarked Namjoon with a dimpled grin, "But I really don't mind. It's nice to just sit and read for a bit."
"Do you not usually get time to relax?"
Namjoon just shrugged, putting the used creamer and sugar packet on the magazine table by his book.
"No, not normally. Normally I'm doing bills or shopping for necessities. Sometimes cleaning or working."
Lia sat silently as Namjoon took a tentative sip of the coffee.
"Why don't you relax?"
"You're asking a lot of questions," said Namjoon with a small chuckle, "When I haven't even asked you that many."
"Well then ask me one," said Lia.
Namjoon looked towards the reception desk where the receptionist there got caught for half a second looking at him before looking back down at the screen in front of her. Namjoon chuckled again.
"Perhaps I will after work," said Namjoon. "Too many nosy people around now."
"Well, I get off in another hour," said Lia. "We can talk then."
"Don't worry. I'll be here with my book and now my coffee," said Namjoon, raising it a bit in the air as he made mention of it. "Thank you for this."
"Of course," said Lia with a faint smile, standing from her chair to go back to her job.
When her shift was done, Namjoon was still sitting where she had left him. He moved to rise from his seat when she walked over, taking care of his coffee trash from earlier before tucking the book away into the satchel.
"Shall we go?"
Lia nodded, following Namjoon outside into the early afternoon air.
"How are you wanting to celebrate?"
The question took Lia by surprise as she looked over at Namjoon.
"Jungkook mentioned this was an important day; that it needed to be celebrated, so how would you like to do that?"
Every time Namjoon made mention of Jungkook, Lia felt herself missing her best friend. However, it was extremely thoughtful and caring for Namjoon to take an interest in making this day special for her too.
"I have an idea," said Lia finally, "But it's a surprise."
She moved to walk past Namjoon then, leaving the other to look after her in confusion for a moment before jogging to catch up with her.
"Where are you going?"
"You'll find out," said Lia.
Soon enough, Namjoon did just that. The two of them stood outside a small arcade; neon lights blinking and pulsing in the slightly filmy window.
"What are we doing here?"
"I'm going to make sure you have some fun," said Lia as she looked at him determined.
