Your POV
a lot of people never really enjoy high school, at all actually. it stresses the hell out of them, they seem to never focus straight there even though their supposed to be, and people never get along with the teachers because they don't seem to bother following the policy of caring for every student as one. anxiety was born there, stress, negativity, drama, confusion. its normal to not seem to be able to enjoy the thought of going to the same location seven hours a day for five days a week.
kind of the same thing for me, i still attempt to find the most of each minute of it.
then there's ethan, a boy who everyone pretty much knows...but only his name. they don't seem to bother getting to know him because all they see when they find him is in the library; his jaw clenched tight as he focuses carefully on the book in front of him that's as thick as a math textbook. his glasses slip down gradually from his nose until he pinches it back up to a comfortable position on the bridge of it. his hair would be neat, put up in a quiff most days, other days in a beanie, and he would have chocolate brown strands pop out of the beanie like wings. his lips shiny with chapstick, also by licking his lips often. basically i'm saying he's too cute to not be noticed.
but he's quiet to where it's easy to not notice him. he would walk up to a person and he would just mumble shyly, barely audible but the person that he goes up to wouldn't care, they would just leave ethan alone because they believe he's nothing but a boy trapped in a library like it were his home.
one of high school biggest problems would be isolation. ethan is accidentally left trapped in this bubble that no one bothers to pop, just by talking to him, but he avoids it like it were a normal. a normal that isn't a type of normal in my perspective.
i've seen almost every single guy in this school, and no one ever caught my eye so quick the first time i met them than ethan. i've seen him, politely speaking to others, picking up things for people when they drop their items, and he holds this loose smile that's just a new way to welcome you. his atmosphere is bright, positive, his mind holds success, his heart holds optimism. but no one sees this beautiful person that way.
today i found him at the library, in a beanie barely covering his growing wings. his eyes were laced on the book like he's taken into the story's world.
"i hear your taking the debate club," a teacher said walking up to him. he hesitated before looking up, but caught the teachers eyes. "yeah, i heard your team needed new recruits."
"it's a small group of kids, was debate a small hobby?" she says.
"not really, but i'm willing to make it one," he says. "when's the first meeting?"
"next week wednesday," and that's all i heard before i kind of thought it was weird stalking their conversation.
i pull out a few books from the bookshelf, not even noticing the title since i'm too distracted by who's here.
i pull out one. "that's a good book," the familiar voice i hear next to me, making my body jump. he stutters, "oh sorry did i scare you."
i meet his beautiful brown soft eyes overlapped by his wide glasses. he peers at me, waiting for a single word out of my breathless mouth. his pink curvy lips curl into a toothless smile that makes my heart vibrate in my ears. "yeah i'm fine. this book?"
"yeah, i read it a few weeks ago, i don't want to spoil it but it's one of my favorites," he says looking surprisingly excited and talkative. i feel like maybe something he likes doing is what he enjoys talking about.
"i was interested in this," i lied, peering down at the dense text that's on each page that looks like a blur. i mean, books are okay when they're interesting and my type, this does seem interesting just looking at a sentence or two.
i forgot he was still there, he was also looking at the page i randomly opened to and was reading it. "what brings you here?" i ask attempting to start something.
"i was here to study. it's a quiet place to think without distractions," he says gazing around the place. "what about you?"
"i was looking around for a book," i say clearly noticing how open he is around me, feels new yet good.
"well there's this one," he spoke pointing at the thick book. i look down at it, kind of interested. "true."
we stood there quiet for a second, ethan pinches his glasses back up to the bridge of his nose, also combing through his hair, looking soft just staring at it.
"wanna hang out with me for a while?" he asks, now mumbling, a very sudden change in his voice that made my breathing more heavy, realizing that he's nervous just asking for someone to hang out with.
"okay," i said feeling the nervousness and hearing the sudden change in my voice too.
his beautiful smile peers out of his lips, and soon we ending up at our own table, just reading, and i couldn't help but look at his concentration on the book in front of him.
his elbow rests on the table, his fist is pressed up against his cheek making his lips look plumper than usual. his head was at an angle that exposed how long his lashes were as they lazily peered at the text. his eyebrows furrow but yet his face looks so loose and soft. i never felt so attracted to someone like him, he's easy to like once you slowly get to know him.
"what are you looking at?" he says looking up at me. my cheeks heat up, embarrassed by how dazed i was while looking at him reading. "uh, i zoned out."
"is the book not interesting?"
"i just want to talk to you," i admit.
"i barely know you, but i will if we talk," he says closing his book to now listen to me.
and then our small talks moved to long conversations about our childhood. he told me how his twin brother is barely like him, who's doing sports right now. "did you want to try a sport?"
"yeah, but i felt more into the studies. i play sports with my family but never really taken time to do it in school, i felt more into academics, grayson's very athletic compared to me," he admits but never felt embarrassed. then he smirks, "but i'm smarter."
"i was expecting you to say that, and i agree."
"he's more social than me, since...you know, he's a football player, and i'm a math geek," he laughs. "but i'm not mad, i'm doing things that i love."
"you're cool!"
"not really-"
"ethan, getting to know you, you're pretty cool."
he hides his face in his hands, hiding the red tinted face i already saw. "stop," he drags.
"you're also hot," i blurt.
"nope, nope, nope," he repeats still holding his face in his hands. i know he seems flattered, which makes me feel flattered since he's reacting this way.
"it's obvious," i say.
"you're cute too," he responds.
"hot?"
he's barely keeping in his burst, "yeah."
we stare at eachother both of us clearly blushing, then we broke into fits of laughter, but quiet since were in a library, our hands cupping our mouths.
he's so full of positive energy, he opens up once you speak to him. his atmosphere is light and comfortable, he's humble to anyone. his innocence lightens the mood, and awkwardness never really was a thing. it was as if we were already close friends from the beginning, and i'm begging for this comfort to never stop.
"you're fun to be around i have to admit," i say.
"you're making me blush stop," he says never losing his warming smile. "you are too."
"oh really," i say. he nods and i couldn't help but gain so much more attraction toward this boy. he's really something.
few minutes later of constant chattering, i realize i had to leave, making my eyes widen, internally saddened since i didn't want to go. i stand up and looked at his confused gaze. "i have to go, i'll see you tomorrow."
"no," he drags showing a puppy face.
"i'll be back."
"you promise?" he says then again curving his pink lips into a grin.
"i promise, e," i say, then he smirks playfully, and i found out it was because i gave him a nickname already.
"okay, bye," i wave and walk away.
