The Cast
The Yazidi people are charming and likable with magnetic personalities. Their looks vary from dark skinned, dark, curly hair with brown eyes to light skinned, blue eyes with straight red hair and freckles (and every spectrum in between!) However, I prefer this to be a "colorblind" cast because both terrorists and oppressed people come in every race, color and geographic location. Ideally the Yazidi sex slave girls, and The Sand Monsters, should also be diverse. This is also a girl heavy cast! It is the author's desire to have many strong woman characters in "Envy."
Papa Fadhil Mazin: is in his mid-forties, ruggedly handsome, stubborn and old fashioned in his ways. He is a former Kurdish Peshmerga soldier who was wounded in the 90's. He suffers from PTSD but is too proud to admit it.
Nala Mazin: is in her mid-thirties, attractive, strong and a bit sarcastic. She likes to have things done right the first time. She believes a woman's place is to have lots of children in a tidy home however she longs for more for her daughters. She is married to Fadhil and is the mother of Envy and Layla.
Envy Grace Mazin: is the oldest daughter of Fadhil and Nala Mazin. She is 19 and beautiful but hides her looks behind combat boots and messy ponytails. She's even more stubborn than her father. Her greatest desire is to join the Kurdish military group known as Peshmerga and fight the genocide of her Yazidi people. She never wants to get married.
Layla Mazin: is the youngest daughter. She is going on 16 years old. She is the peacemaker in the Mazin family. She is delicate and even prettier than Envy but her sweetness and her breathing issues keep her humble. She loves her life and wants to get married early and have lots of children. She desperately wants everyone to like her—especially her big sister whom she idolizes. She falls for Ari, love at first sight.
Malak: He is twenty-four years old and a former US soldier. He was born and raised in Texas; both of his parents are Kurdish and immigrated to the United States, after Saddam Hussein's hostile takeover. After his tour of duty, he enlisted as a Kurdish Peshmerga soldier. He is charming, strong, a person of faith, and a romantic at heart. He is quick witted and instantly smitten by Envy.
Ari: He is Malak's partner in the Peshmerga army. As soon as he turned 18 he enlisted to get out of herding sheep as well as help his people. He is smart and more of a lover than a fighter. He idolizes Malak. He falls head over heels for Layla!
Mariam: A young English teacher. She is good friends with the Mazin family. She is funny and full of joy.
Officer Azis: A Kurdish leader of the local Peshmerga outfit. He is serious and to the point but laced with compassion.
Keen: He the local leader of The Sand Monsters. He is in his late 20's-early 30's and full of rage. He buys into all the propaganda of his terror group and the power has gone to his head.
Zryan: He is the youngest of The Sand Monsters. He joined the gang because he felt awkward and alone. He is terrified of Keen does whatever he says.
Selwah: She is a captured Yazidi girl. She tries very hard to be brave for the other girls. She acts motherly towards the other sex slaves.
Dahlia: She is a sweet Yazidi girl who cries most of the time. She has a rough time in captivity and appears about 16 years old.
Alisa: She is a captured Yazidi girl in her late teens, early twenties. She is tough and has tried to escape many times. She looks pretty beat up. She is Avine's older sister.
Avine: She is the shiest and youngest of the Yazidi girls. She is depressed and ashamed.
Namoon: She is in her mid-teens. She's a strong Yazidi girl. While in captivity she tries her best to be encouraging to the other girls.
The Sand Monsters: Evil men who hate everyone who are not like them, they believe the lies they've been fed and are essentially brainwashed by extremists and or power hungry. The upper half faces are covered by blue, western type, masks. (Since their faces are covered they can double as Villagers or Peshmerga soldiers when they're not in scenes together.)
The Peshmerga soldiers: These are brave Kurdish men and woman who are--Muslim, Christian and Yazidi. They fight terrorism in Northern Iraq. (They may double as Daesh extremists in other scenes.)
The Villagers: These are Yazidi neighbors living in Sinjar of all different shapes and sizes and ages.
Yazidi slave girls: Girls who've been captured by Daesh. They may be in village scenes prior to their capture.
