Part 3- Maui
Just having left the plane from O'au, Echo looked up at a sign that said 'Welcome to Maui' in bright glowing letters.
"Cute," Fives said, pointing at the sign.
~~~
"Part of what we can do on this program is sponsor students to go on whale watches and learn about our marine life," The guide said.Echo, Rex and Fives looked at the crowd of students milling around the building, some eating snacks and others running around.
At the semi-muffled shout of "Tourists!!" the three brothers turned to see a girl jumping up and down waving enthusiastically with a bright smile on her face. Fives grinned and waved back. Echo squinted at him disapprovingly. The girl laughed and disappeared behind a pillar with her friends.
~~~
Echo, Rex and Fives boarded the boat about to leave the harbor for a whale wash.
"Maybe there'll be a Kraken," Fives whispered in Echo's ear.
"Fives, shut up," Echo sighed, leaning on the boat rail.
"Sit. Down." Rex hissed.
~~
"Go faaaaaaster!!" Fives screamed from the front of the boat with the water splashing him in the face. All over, in fact. A few ladies screamed from up in the top of the boat.
Echo snorted and settled back against the bench by the cabin.
Then- "Whale!!"
The captain came in over the mike: "If you'll look at eleven degrees now, you'll see a mother humpback whale with her calf!! Humpback whales come to Hawai'i from December to May to mate and give birth to calves in the safe waters here, where there aren't any predators. Who can tell me what the whales are doing when they're not in Hawai'i?"
"Eating," Echo muttered to himself. His stomach growled.
"Eating!!" A small child with his thumb in his mouth said.
"Did I hear eating? That's right! The whales need to replenish their body fat in order to make their migration here. They don't eat at all because there's no food here in Hawaii. Warm, clear waters!! Only the calves eat; They drink their mother's milk.
We've got to stop here so that we don't get to close to the whales- we're not allowed to do that."
Echo stood up and peered over the edge of the boat. Suddenly, a whale surfaced next to the boat and exhaled, sending water droplets into the air.
"Hey Echo, Rex, close your mouths," Fives said delightedly appearing next to his brothers. Echo blinked, wide-eyed, and pushed his sunglasses up his nose. Holy. Shab.
"Fishy," Fives said, wrinkling his nose.
"Fishy, but cool," Rex whispered in amazement.
A loud slap echoing across the water had them looking up as the whale slid back under water. A whale's tail slapped down on the water, and another breached.
The captain started to talk about the whales again and something about their unique tail markings, but Echo was too busy watching the whales while Rex took a video and Fives snapped pictures on his phone.
"This is amazing," Echo breathed.
"Perfect," Fives said.
All in all, this trip to Hawai'i had been totally worth it.
A/N: Hey! Sorry I haven't updated much, you know. Life. Lack of motivation. Etc. Etc. I'm sorry if it sucked, it's the first thing I've written in... Ages. Thing that's actually an actual story thing, anyway. Hope you enjoyed!! Vote or comment if you did!! (Or comment if you didn't, I'm cool with that too.)
