you've got a smile that makes the race | ninjago series
I want to try some nice, easy, no-stress fluffy, cute Kailor! I rarely do the canon ships, not because I don't like them but because I guess I'm not adept at writing them since I love doing my OC's ships. So let's see how this goes!
Title from Love Is Fire by Freya Ridings

Skylor hummed to herself as she wiped the tables down and placed the chairs upside down on their surface. Peaceful jazz music played in the quiet setting, courtesy of the radio Kai had bought her for the shop. The calm rain beat against the glass, adding a steady rhythm to the music.
A soft tapping pulled her from the daydream, causing her to turn and see a familiar face in the store window. The red-haired girl couldn't stop her lips from turning upwards as she walked to the door and unlocked it. A cold wind blew through the entrance and Skylor gave the soaked young man a mock-glare.
"The store's closed! We don't take half-drowned rats after hours." Skylor yelled over the sounds of the storm.
Kai grinned, his arms were wrapped around himself as he shivered in the pouring rain. Skylor tried to ignore how her heart fluttered when his warm amber eyes met hers. "Not even for poor, innocent, handsome heroes in need of a warm meal?"
"Hm," Skylor pretended to think for a moment before stepping back to allow him to enter. "Get inside, doofus, you'll catch a cold."
Kai gratefully moved past her and stood patiently as Skylor closed the door and retrieved a towel for him.
"What are you doing here?" Skylor asked him as she wrapped it around his shoulders.
Kai's teeth chattered but his wide smile never faltered. "I wanted to see you." His gaze never left her face.
Skylor felt her cheeks warm at the sweet expression he was giving her and quickly looked away. She distracted him by ruffling his damp hair. "You're such a dork." She told him fondly.
Clearing her throat, the woman stepped back and moved towards the kitchen. "You sit yourself down and I'll get you something to eat."
"Thanks, Sky," Kai said softly.
Skylor ducked behind the counter and began heating some leftover noodles. As she waited for them to warm she glanced at her guest. The master of fire sat quietly in a booth, looking around at all the new spring decor Skylor had hung up over the weekend.
Kai was a mess. There was mud all over his shoes and his clothes, his hair and shirt were sticking to his skin, and he was creating a miniature pond under his chair. Yet all it took was a simple self-satisfied smirk and suddenly she was lost in his eyes.
It scared her that he seemed to place this spell over her. To her father control was everything. But Kai made Skylor make decisions she wouldn't have done before. Kai broke down the walls and boundaries she set for herself and uncovered a person she never realized was there. He had changed who she was and framed the path she was on now. Her heart was in his hands.
It was terrifying, incredibly reckless and stupid, yet something about it was so exhilarating. She was willing to do it. She was willing to flip the coin and take the chance. It was Kai after all.
"Skylor?"
She quickly shook herself before dumping the noodles into a bowl and plopping it in front of him. Kai nodded in thanks and dug in with vigour. Skylor sat down across from him and watched with amusement as he ate.
"Didn't you have any dinner before you came here?" Skylor raised an eyebrow at him.
Kai slurped up another noodle and swallowed before answering. "No." He said simply. "Cole's cooking tonight. I'm staying as far away from there as possible."
"So you just come here for free, non-toxic food, not because you like me or anything?" Skylor teased him. She was delighted when she saw a tinge of red flush on Kai's cheeks. "Aw! Is someone blushing?"
"Shut up!" Kai whined, covering his face with his hands.
"You are!" Skylor giggled.
"Sky-y!"
"Who knew the big, strong, fire ninja would go pink because of a girl-" Skylor was abruptly cut off when a pair of lips pressed gently against hers.
She instinctively leaned into the kiss, a hand going to hook over the nape of his neck. His lips tasted like soy sauce and hot chilli flakes from the ramen. She couldn't help the light laugh erupting from her lips, making Kai pull away.
"Stop laughing at me!" Kai complained, but a sparkle was in his eye as he looked down at her adoringly.
"I'm sorry, I can't help it!" Skylor chuckled, pressing her forehead against his. "You're just so cute!"
He pouted but welcomed the embrace, even though it was a little awkward to be leaning over the table. They just sat there in wordlessly, basking in each other's company. The drumming of the rain continued and the music was wafting pleasantly through the air as if they were in some romantic movie. Kai leant back a little bit to look at her, his eyes flicking to her lips. She could see his hesitance, the thousands of thoughts going through his head. Kai was like her, he didn't trust easily, and when he did he struggled to find the words to explain his emotions. But they got each other nonetheless.
"I... really like you, Skylor." Kai breathed softly, his voice was barely a whisper.
Skylor smiled and pressed her face into the crook of his neck. "I love you too."
