A young women walked though the ancient halls. Her light blonde hair looked almost white, it was pulled back in a bun and secured with a tie. The slender, dark handle of a mage's wand poked through the locks. She threw open the doors, much to the guard's protest and approached the king.
He was tall, skin dark and etched in purple scars. Her gaze dragged to the portrait hanging on the wall where a man smiled proudly, lighter toned and happy, with a tender-hearted women, and a joyful young boy. What he had been before the war. Before the dark magic left him darkened and scarred.
"Your majesty," the girl knelt respectfully, her green eyes flicking upwards. "I come with grave news."
The king stayed where he was, eyes glittering like rich rubies as he focused on something she couldn't seem to see. "What is it?"
"We have caught word that elemental assassins have crossed our borders. I am positive they are from your brother." The girl rose slowly to her feet, clasping her hands before her. "Garmadon, we can all assume that they are coming for you and the prince."
King Garmadon's lips turned down in a frown, and he turned towards the girl. "Send a group at once. Cut them off before they can even make it past the forest."
The girl dipped her head once before she spun and moved hastily away. Garmadon curled his upper lip, slamming his hand onto he rail of the balcony with anger. He glared at the rising sun, his words hissed out slowly and so softly they could barely be heard.
"This war has raged on long enough, Wu." Garmadon growled. "It is time you and your little creatures were brought to their knees!"

The blade cut through the air, sun dancing along the golden edge as it swung. There was a musical ring of metal when it met with another's sword, they both drew back and clashed once more.
It was a lethal dance, feet moved swiftly in calculated steps, perspiration dripping down the warriors' temple, arms shook from the strain but refused to back down. The first adjusted his gauntlet, looming down on the smaller adversary with a sneer. Though the spiteful state couldn't be seen through the helmet, his opponent knew it was there.
The smaller one simply looked back without emotion, focusing on each movement. The first roared, the giant broad sword slashing through the air. The second nimbly dodged, an elbow caught an unsuspecting side, throwing the larger man off balance. With a curse, he fell, weapon loose in his hand as the smaller one pointed their tip at his neck.
"Yield." He demanded, prodding at the resistor's chest plate.
With a huff, they complied, dropping their hands and letting the sword go. "I yield." He ground out.
The smaller one retreated, a hand reached up and hooked the bottom of the helmet. With one quick movement it was lifted from their head, revealing a head of blonde hair and a cheerful smile.
"Nice try, Killow. You almost beat me." Killow scowled, tipping his own helmet off. "Almost." The other emphasized with a teasing grin.
"I will get you next time, Prince." Killow wagged a finger, dislike lighting in his eyes as he picked himself up.
"Lloyd!" The Prince turned, emerald gaze fixed on the familiar face rushing towards him. "Well done!"
Lloyd rubbed the back of his neck shyly and slipped his sword back into its sheath. "Hey, Rumi."
The royal mage stopped, dipping into a quick curtsy. As she did, she sent a glare Killow's way. The large man rolled his eyes but walked away to take off his armour.
Harumi straightened and brushed the dirt that covered the heir's shoulder off gently. "You're going to have everyone at your throat if you continue your winning streak."
Lloyd waved her off with a whine. "Yeah, I know." He glanced at her with a goofy grin. Harumi smiled back and he felt his heart skip a beat. Not for the first time did he notice how pretty she looked with her hair up, the rich greens of her robes complementing her pale gaze nicely.
"So..." he cleared his throat awkwardly. "Are you free later? We could go by our spot on the canal."
Harumi smiled at him like he was some naive child asking if they could let a raccoon into the house. "I'm afraid I can't tonight, your highness." She tapped the leather spell book secured at her waist. "I have to deal with a few things."
Lloyd tried to hide his disappointment with curiosity. "Mage stuff?" He raised an eyebrow. "What kind of spells are you doing?"
"Just the usual." Harumi's lips tilted upward. "It's quite boring. Some crops are dying out by the forest."
He felt embarrassed, his eyes glanced away to the high walls surrounding the castle grounds. He imagined going out and helping people, using magic instead of weapons, spilling potions instead of blood. "I wish I could be a mage." Lloyd thought out loud.
Harumi laughed like that was the silliest idea in the world and spread her arms out towards the world. "You're a prince, Lloyd! Your place is here with your people!"
This time his emerald eyes rolled up towards the sky, he strolled to the armour rack. His hands moved at the buckles and he slid off his gauntlet. "You sounds like my father."
"It's all politics, lessons, and preparing for battle. I'm forced to stay within the walls until I am properly trained to help lead an attack on the elemental masters." He grumbled, the armour stand swung around dangerously when he placed his helmet on too roughly.
Harumi tsked and placed a hand in his shoulder. "Because that is your role, Lloyd. This is your path as the heir to the throne. We must all do our parts or else everything falls apart." She held him so he looked into her eyes.
He was captivated, unable to look away as her red lips moved. "I suppose..."
In a blink she backed away. "Good."
"Lady Harumi! Stop moving your mouth and let's go!" They both jumped as a the head of the guard appeared, Ultra Violet's dark eyes glinted and she smirked at Lloyd. "Hey, Little Prince."
Lloyd shifted uncomfortably and focused his attention on his friend. "See you later, Rumi." He said politely, bowing. Harumi took a gem from her necklace and tossed it onto the grass. The mage gave him a shake of the head as she ground it with her shoe.
"Good bye, your highness."
Her sweet smile stayed with him as she turned. the young mage hissed the word of dark magic under her breath as she and Ultra Violet were consumed by dark smoke.

The full moon rose high over the land, its pale light streamed in through the prince's window. Lloyd rubbed his eyes, he felt tired from sitting through his daily lessons. His father usually came to go over everything he learned, wanting to make sure he hadn't fallen asleep like the last few times, to his surprise the King never appeared. Tensions were high in the castle, he could tell something was up. But no one ever told him anything lately, so Lloyd was stuck speculating.
The confusion of the day kept him awake, so the boy got up and moved to his desk. He struck a match, with a spark the fire rose and lit the candle. It gave him a little more to work with so he took out his sketch book and a piece of charcoal.
He began to sketch, the artist carefully created the heart shaped face, sly lips, and glittering eyes. Before Lloyd knew it he was staring at a rough outline of Harumi.
"No." Lloyd ripped out the page hastily but froze before he could toss it away. "No, no, no."
He had a crush on the girl for what seemed like forever. It was her mysterious expression, the amused look in her eyes when he said something she thought was stupid. She seemed so perfect in his eyes. As Lloyd stared down at the drawing it was almost as if he had gotten a glimpse of an angel and projected it into his page.
Maybe she'll accept him. Lloyd thought, a crazy, hopeless, desperate wish. He could imagine her laugh, like bells as she shook her head at him.
"It's your role to marry to a noble girl from another kingdom." Rumi would say. "It's what you must do to secure peace between the kingdoms."
Lloyd shook his head and waved as if it would erase the words. Maybe she liked him too. Maybe she would believe he was worth the risk. His green eyes stayed glued on the sketch, he couldn't rip himself away from her eyes.
It was a crash that startled him from his thoughts. It wasn't the small thump of something falling, but rather the horrible noise that gave you a deep feeling of dread. The feeling that everything was about to turn around forever.
"THERE'S BEEN A BREACH!" Someone shrieked.
"PROTECT THE ROYAL FAMILY!"
Lloyd jerked to his feet, head spinning as he made out the thud and shouts of battle.
Someone was in the castle.
Someone bad.
Lloyd dropped the picture, he whipped around, searching for a weapon as he listened to the yells. That's what this was all about. That's why Harumi left. The elemental masters were coming. They were coming to kill him. Shaking hands wrenched a decorative sword from the wall, it was blunt, short, and clumsy but he held it firm as he searched for a way out.
Lloyd hadn't left the castle walls in what seemed like forever. The casual brawls with the knights were very different from the horrors of a real battle. His heart thumped in his chest when the door was wrenched open.
To his relief Killow was there, face determined as he waltzed in. Killow wrenched the sword from his hands, making Lloyd's mouth drop.
"Hey!" The Prince protested, only to be shushed and dragged out of his room.
Killow crept low, which was hard since he was a big guy. He yanked Lloyd down the hall, rushing him away as quick as he could. His eyes widened as he caught brief sights of the fight. There were three people, all dressed in coloured gi's. One stood proud, her hands twisting as water swirled around her like a rings. The next was taller with broad shoulders and a stomp that shook the floor. The last was quick and precise with his moves, ice glinting in his hands as he fought.
"Sorry, Prince." Killow ripped his attention back when he was suddenly whipped around. The guard yanked one of the lanterns that were attached to the wall, a door slid open, revealing a dark hall, and Lloyd's brow furrowed.
"What the-"
"It's for your own good." With that he was shoved into the darkness.
*****
Curse you, Killow. Lloyd stumbled blindly through the dark, keeping his hand on the wall as he walked. He could feel the moss on the stone, the dust and the cobwebs that coated her floors. Lloyd spent the majority of his life cooped up in the castle. He had explored every inch of the place. But not here. This was all new territory.
For a moment, Lloyd just assumed he'd roam around for awhile and eventually find an escape. His father would find him and all would be good.
Irony just loved to bite him in the butt.
"Ow! Kai! That was my head!" Said a squeaky voice.
"Well, then make your head less wall-shaped!" Another snapped.
There was a gasp. "You take that back!"
Were they here to get him? Were they going to escort him to safety?
"Hello?" Lloyd called tentatively.
There was silence.
Then something flickered, heat blasted in his face as fire was lit right in front of his nose. Lloyd thought it was a torch for a moment before he focused in on the hand that enclosed the flame.
Crap.
Lloyd let out a horrible scream, the two didn't expect that and jumped back, the one who wasn't wielding fire let out a loud shout as well. Lloyd didn't miss the classic gi's with the elemental insignia's.
Time to run.
Lloyd bolted, there was a curse word that bounced through the halls as Lloyd sprinted in the other direction. Before he could get far his body convulsed when something shocked him. His muscles seized up and pain filled his entire body, making him crash to the ground. Lloyd's breath was knocked out of him and dazed eyes could barely comprehend the approaching feet. But they did notice the shiny golden katana heading his way.
Honestly, Lloyd's reaction was stupid. It was if all his training was thrown out of his brain. Instead of reaching for the arm holding the weapon or the hilt, he just threw his hands up over his face.
A blinding green light suddenly exploded, Lloyd felt all the energy pour through his veins into his finger tips and radiated into a powerful blast that made his attackers stumble back. It hit the fire master square in the chest and went him flying with a horrible crack into the wall.
Lloyd's eyes widened and he stared at his hand in shock. Maybe it was the adrenaline. Maybe it was the fear. Maybe it was instinct. But one thing was for sure...
It was magic.
Elemental magic.
