The ash and sparks flew in the hot breeze, melting away any trace of snow.
I ran through the slushy snow towards my house. I was almost there. My legs were burning with the effort, but I finally reached my house. It was made of wood and hay, which meant it would be fuel for the fire, and I'd be the meat cooking inside. I grabbed the wooden door handle and tried to pull it, but it was no use. It was jammed. The fire in the trees flickered closer and closer to my house, but it wasn't on fire yet. I took a couple of steps back, then slammed my right shoulder into the door, sending it flying open. I quickly ran to my room, opening the door with a lot more ease. When I entered, I looked around in horror. The blinds were on fire, and it was spreading to my bed. I had to move fast. My eyes darted around the room, before they stopped on a limp body on the floor.
"Cranky!" I screeched, running to his side.
I grabbed the little bird in my hand, shaking him gently. "Please don't die Cranky, I need you." I whispered desperately.
And for the first time in my life, I was relieved to see the piercing red eyes of the crow. "You dumb bird, you scared me." I chuckled in relief, with a hint of sadness still left in my voice.
The little black bird shook his wings, making ashes fly out of his feathers, as he flew onto my left shoulder.
I quickly looked around for my other belongings now. My bow. I quickly snatched the quiver full of arrows and my bow, and hung it over my right shoulder.
That was all I needed. I ran out of my room and into my parents room now. I ran over to their chest of draws and began opening them all, trying to find something, anything of theirs that held memories. I needed to remember them by something besides their blood that stained my hands.
Yes! Mothers bracelet. It was a bracelet she wore to big events. It was made entirely of white pearls. Mother had told me my father got it for her for a large price back when they first met. I quickly snatched the bracelet from the draw and put it around my wrist. What else could I fi-
Something creaked loudly above me, making me snap my head up to see it.
The wooden ceiling! It was collapsing in from the middle!
With energy that was only available because of my rushing adrenaline, I launched myself from beside the draws, out of the room, stumbling and falling onto the floor, just in time for the roof of my parents room to fall in on itself. Smoke and ash blew out of the room, making me cough severely. I quickly stood up now, running out of the house that was once so beautiful. I ran towards the other end of the village now, where I could hear all the commotion. I had to get out of here with the others before it was too late. My legs splashed three ough the cold, shin-high water that once was snow, soaking my dress and shoes.
I finally reached Nevis, Zane, Axel and the sabres. "Raz! Take the other sabres with you and go gather the pack, get them out of here before the fire reaches them!" Axel yelled over the sound of the fighting and the fire.
Axel turned to me as I ran towards him.
"Quick Lian, let's go!" he called, reaching his hand out for me to grab it.
But my eyes were glued to the Chieftains house. It was on fire. But I needed something from inside. It just hoped the inside was in one peice.
"Wait for me!" I called back, taking my quiver off my shoulder and tossing it to Axel. He caught it and looked at the quiver than back at me with worry. I knew the bow string would snap the second I entered the house from the extreme heat.
I changed direction towards the Chiefs house.
"No Lian! You won't make it!" I heard Axel call from a distance, but I didn't stop.
I know, I'm reckless and dumb, but I have to. I finally reached the house. The door was on fire, so I quickly kicked it down. I ran inside, everything was on fire and the gold was melting down the walls.
I reached the Chiefs room, which had its door still wide open. The room had less fire in it than the rest of the house, but it was still deadly hot. I could feel the air coming into my lungs, with little oxygen and mostly smoke and ash.
I coughed repeatedly as I tried to breath, scanning the room for what I wanted. My eyes were stinging and teary, and felt as if they were being boiled. Finally I spot it, through all the fire, the chest. I ran towards it, still coughing as I knelt down, ravaging through the items, I finally found the book.
Jarrath's Diary.
But the second I grabbed it, I heard a loud crack above me, at the roof collapsed over me. Everything was black, I didn't want to open my eyes, but I knew I had to. I slowly opened my eyes, feeling the ash that coated my eyelashes sprinkling onto my cheeks. I was alive, and unharmed. The roof was collapsed over me like a tent.
I heard Cranky chirp weakly and worridly from on my shoulder. I could crawl out from the wooden peices of roof that were above me, but after that what would I do? The exit of the room was blocked by the peices of the roof that had fallen. I thought about climbing through the broken roof, but I would have to climb something to reach the high roof, and everything was on fire. Except... One of the planks of the roof that had fallen over me, was not on fire. It was much lighter than the others, as if it wasn't burnt or old at all. Then it clicked in my mind. Heart Oak! The Chief had a peice of his roof made of it. Now I had an idea. I crawled out of the wooden tent and stood up. In the two minutes that I was in here I noticed the fire was spreading fast, so I had to be faster. I grabbed the plank of Heart Oak that was acting as one half of the tent I had been in, making the other half fall as I did. I held it in both hands now, holding it like a spear. It reached from the ground up to my neck if I were standing straight, and it was thin enough for me to wrap my hands around it. I pulled it back now, then rambed it into the wall of the house, causing the wall to crack, splinters sticking out everywhere. I pulled back again, and rambed the wall, about thirty centimetres to the left of the last hole I had made. Again, the wall cracked and splintered. Then I done it two more times, but thirty metres above the last two holes. After I had my splintered square, I slambed the middle of it with the flat of my foot, making it fly off and into the water outside. I quickly jumped out the hole, landing with a splash in the water, quickly extinguishing the flame that had caught on my shoe. I gasped the smoke air, finally filling my lungs with more oxygen. I ran towards Axel, Zane and Nevis now.
I made sure I had everything I needed. Oak, the painting from the Chiefs house, and the Monile were in my dress pockets. On my left shoulder was an oxygen deprived Cranky, around my left wrist was mother's pearl bracelet, in my left hand was Jarrath's diary, and in my right hand was the Heart Oak stick. I was now in the water beside the Chieftains house, on my knees and right hand- my left hand was holding Jarrath's diary up against my chest.
I breathed deeply, trying to gather my energy. The adrenalin was becoming useless to me now. My hands were cold and tingly despite the heat, and my face was beginning to go numb. My throat felt as if it were coated with ash. I.. Needed to.. Get up..
Then I felt a strong arm wrap around my stomach and lift me onto my feet. I stumbled dizzily as I recognised Axel's grinning face.
"Done not listening to me?" he asked in a slightly amused tone. I managed a weak smile as I replied, "Maybe just for today.." I sighed in exhaustion. Axel smiled at my ability to be stubborn in a situation like this.
Once I thought I was out of the worst of the trouble, Axel quickly shoved me to the side, blocking a sword attack with his small battle axe. The Chief growled in Axel's face, pulling the sword away and with admirable speed, slicing his leg just slow enough for Axel jump back and dodge most of the damage.
I quickly stood up, and with the hand that had the Heart Oak stick in it, I swung it at the back of the oblivious Chiefs head, knocking him straight to ground.
"Lets go!" Axel called, grabbing my left arm and running towards Nevis and Zane, who were trying their best to keep away the entire village that was attacking them.
I was surprised that Cranky had managed to keep his grip on my shoulder this whole time, but then again, his talons were definitely digging deep into my flesh.
"I hope your friends are nice enough to give us a lift." Axel said as his ran towards them.
"Nevis!" I called, catching his and Zane'd attention. They flapped their wings, blowing away the people closest to them, and flew towards us, landing only a few metres from us, just far enough that were didn't get blown away.
Nevis lowered himself to the ground, making it easier for me and Axel to climb onto his back.
"Don't you go anywhere you theif!" I heard the Chiefs enraged voice call.
"Go go!" I yelled, before Nevis took to the sky, flying about ten metres above the ground in the first few flaps of his wings.
"You theif! You murder! She controls the dragons to kill us! She's a witch! Kill her!" the chief yelled, seconds before spears and arrows flew at us. But the few that reached us, Nevis quickly dodged, then flapped his wings and let the wind carry us away.
I watched as my burning village got smaller and smaller. I swallowed, slightly soothing my dry and burnt throat. I was covered in blood, tears and ash. I looked around at all the warn out faces, but I knew none if them felt the pain I felt. I had just lost everything. My parents, my home and my village.
I turned my gaze now to the sun rising behind a mountain. A volcano.
No, I haven't lost everything... The people here with me are the only people besides my parents who have ever cared about me. As for my home...
I'd have to find a new one.
My mind wondered our whole trip to the volcano, the home of the dragons. Everyone was silent in honour of the events that had just occurred. But my thoughts of grief, loss and sadness were pushed aside as I remembered the Chiefs blade stab through the backs of my parents, as I remembered what my father said he used to do to my mother for wanting rights, as I remembered how the whole village had followed and obeyed him.
"She's a witch!"
I remembered the words of the Chief.
And that's when I made up my mind. I would make him die, him and his people, I will kill them all, and make them suffer like they made me suffer. And everyone knows,
revenge... is sweet.
The End.
