Ain't It A Shame

Chapter 3;

"I like that." the girl sitting beside me said, making me jump in the seat. "Oh God, I didn't mean to scare you. I just thought it was pretty."  I looked down at my paper, it was a simple rose, with a poem tied into it. So far, I’ve found out I have three classes throughout the day with Paul and four with John, not including lunch.

"Thanks. Yer Charlie, correct?" I asked, trying to remember what she said earlier.

"Yeah, it's a boys name. But my parents think that'll be in one day. Unisex names I guess." She told me.

"Do you draw?"

"God no. I can't even write that pretty. I can cook though, my grandmother taught me since I was little." Charlie said with a smile. God I thought how sexist, girls being taught to cook and clean since a young age.

"Well that's good, probably a lot better than school lunch, hm?"

"I pack my lunch, but I'd share with you of course. Unless you have somewhere else to sit." She said shyly, I laughed, I think I just got invited to lunch.

"Nope, I'm all yours. All I've met is rude guys."

"I saw you, talkin' with the teddys."

"How?" I asked, I was no longer in science but in my third period, almost fourth by now but I hadn't seen John seen he 'walked' me to second period.

"Well.... Not me personally, but new girls are always watched closely. Even the staff does. I wouldn't be surprised if you got pulled into the office and warned about them."

"They don't seem that bad."

"Their not. They just wouldn't want the new students to be corrupted in a matter of hours."  She said quickly, protective-like.

"Sounds like you like someone." I said, sounding more girly than I have my whole life, but she didn't seem to notice because she giggled and looked me straight in the eye.

"Pete." She whispered, a big grin spreading across her face.

"McCartney?" I asked, that was the only Pete I knew... Well it was Peter but still.

"Paul McCartney? And no," She said and lowered her voice. "Pete, he's John's friend. Get's outshined a lot by him actually. With redish hair and freckles." she told me giggling, I can see the face, he sat in the back with John and Stu.

"I know who yer talking 'bout. But I only had the pleasure of meeting Paul, his brother Mike, John and Stu. Well and now you."

"You met Stu?"

"Well, he's the first person to say anything to me, other than the teacher that is."

"And what'd he say?" She asked giggling.

"That I was in John's seat. Romantic right?"

"Quite. You moved though, didn't you?"

"Nope." I told her, popping the 'P'. She sat there staring at me.

"And yer still alive?"

"John Lennon's not that scary Charlie." I told her as the bell rang overhead, signaling the end of third period, I picked up my stuff as the teacher yelled out to study, Charlie stayed behind waiting for me.

"What do you have next?" She asked as we got to the door.

"Um.." I said, beginning to look for my schedule.

"She's got Maths. With me. I'll take her." John said, pushing off of the wall he had been leaning against and trying to act casual. I finally found the sheet and looked at it.

"He's right." I told her, which made her eyes go big then swallowed hard.

"I'll see you at lunch then Ellie." Charlie said and ran off in the other direction.

"Are you stalking me or something?"

"No way, I just have a good memory. I'm part of the welcoming committee after-all."

"Are you trying to welcome me into hell or something."

"I agree. School is hell. Why don't you skip with me."

"Because," I said getting defensive. "Lennon! It's me first day. I haven't been to half of me classes and I don't have a pass."

"With the side doors you don't need a pass." John whispered quietly in my ear, making me shudder.

"John. It's me first day, Jesus Christ."

"Fine. Tomorrow then."

"How about you go to a full week of school?"

"I would if I had you in every class... Not just four out of eight of 'em."

"Four-eighths simplified is?"

"Two-fourths. Then one-half."

"Wow, smarter than you look."

"Yer funny."

"Ya know I'm joking John. I can't insult you in a serious way on my first day, now just wait until tomorrow."

"Whatever. Here we are," John said stopping at a door and opening "Maths, soon you'll find out why I never come." John says, coming closer so the teacher doesn't hear him.

The teacher was a total joke. I wasn't bored to tears, because I was half asleep. The teacher, Mr. Grant, was nice but obviously didn't have a social life. Now I was walking side-by-side down the hallway with John toward the lunch hall, I felt odd.... Receiving glares and stares from the guys and girls who saw us, but John of course didn't notice.

"Will you be sitting with us then?" John asked as we entered the large building.

"No. I'm going to sit with Charlie."

"Then how 'bout tomorrow?"

"I don't know," I told him truthfully giving a sly smile. "Maybe ye'd like to ask?"

"Sure!"

"Wait! No John-" I began trying to catch up with him, but he seemed to know this place like the back of his hand and went straight to the table that Charlie and a few other people sat at.

"Charlie... Right?" He said, just as I caught up.

"Yes..."

"May I borrow Eloise. I promise to bring her back."

"Joh-!" I started to say, but this time was cut off by Charlie.

"I have to study anyways, go 'head." She told John, who hit his cue and wrapped an arm around me, I starred, shocked, at Charlie who just winked in response.

"Come 'ed. It won't be that bad. We'll behave."

"John! I'll be the only girl!"

"Paul McCartney will be there. No need to worry."

"Paul?" I asked, sitting down in a seat beside of him.

"Yeah? You know him?"

"Sure. But... Um, I'll be right back." I said getting up, which made John jump up and grab my wrist.

"Charlie said it was fine. Where are you going?"

"Well Lennon. To the lu if you don't mind." I said, rolling my eyes which made him let go of my wrist. Once I got in the bathroom I sat down on the cold tile floors. I wasn't used to people taking much interest in me. Or people staring at me. Plus I felt bad about being mean to John. Yet the logic of ditching him didn't make much since either.

I stayed in the bathroom through out lunch hall. Once I'd gone back to classes, which had turn into sixth period, since they count lunch for some reason, I was met up with John. But to my advantage the open seat was in the front, in front of Charlie.

"What did you do?" Charlie whispered in my ear.

"What are you goin' on 'bout?"

"Lennon is either pissed or tryin' to catch yer shirt on fire with his eyes."

"What?"

"He's been staring at you throughout class!" She whisper yelled hurting my ear and drawing attention getting a warning look from the teacher. Once the bell had rung I pulled all of my stuff together and caught John at the door.

"What's up?"

"What're ye talkin' about?"

"You."

"Hey, I have to go. I'll see you in eighth period though." John said and speed walked to Pete who was waiting at the end of the hallway for him. I'd been waiting for him at the door but he hadn't showed up. So I expected him to be late, but by the time school let out, I knew I had been ditched. It felt like shit. I officially knew how he felt.

"John?" I asked, sitting down on my bus and looking into the back seat where I could see his profile. "John?" I asked again, he turned and looked at me, holding my gaze before turning around. Ditched and ignored, by John. And it's only my first day. I couldn't wait to get home and go back to sleep.
