Chapter 12- misunderstanding

Tyrson walked out of the office building, thinking about grabbing a bite to eat at the restaurant across the street before heading home.

But as he looked up, he noticed Meryl standing on the curb, seemingly lost in her own thoughts.

She started to cross the street, but it was clear she wasn't paying attention. Tyrson called out to her, but she didn't seem to hear him.

He watched in horror as she stepped into the street without looking. A car was coming, and there was no time to spare.

A pang of guilt shot through Tyrson. Why did he care so much about her? He should be happy that she was finally getting what she deserved.

But for some reason, he couldn't shake the feeling that he had gone too far. Maybe he hadn't meant those words. Maybe he had just said them to hurt her, to make her feel remorse for what she had done to him.

Just then, a bolt of lightning flashed across the sky, followed by a deafening clap of thunder. Tyrson looked up at the darkening clouds,

Suddenly, a bright flash of light appeared in front of Tyrson, causing him to squint and turn away. When he looked up again, he saw another car barreling down the road, headed straight for Meryl.

"Meryl, look out!" he yelled, but she was lost in her own thoughts, oblivious to the danger. As the car drew closer, Tyrson knew he had to act fast. Without thinking, he sprinted across the street, moving as fast as his legs would carry him.

Meryl finally heard him this time and turned to look at him, but she also saw the car hurtling towards her. Her eyes widened in terror as she realized that she didn't have time to move out of the way.

Meryl was shaking, her body flooded with adrenaline. She couldn't believe how close she had come to being hit by that car.

Tyrson pulled Meryl to safety, just as the car whizzed past. They landed on the other side of the road, Meryl still in Tyrson's arms.

She lay there for a moment, eyes tightly shut, her whole body trembling. After a moment, she opened her eyes and saw Tyrson looking down at her. "Tyrson," she gasped, then scrambled to her feet.

"Are you all right, Meryl?" Tyrson asked, his voice shaking slightly. She nodded, and he released his grip on her, letting her sit up.

He stared at her, his eyes full of worry and concern. "What were you thinking, walking into the street like that? You could have been killed!" he yelled. She scoffed.

"You think I'd be better off dead?" she scoffed. "That's rich, coming from you!" She rolled her eyes, and Tyrson felt a lump form in his throat. He had been the one to put her in danger, and now she was angry with him.

Tyrson frowned as he thought back to the moment when the car had come barreling toward Meryl. He had been so caught up in his own anger that he hadn't even considered the danger she was in. What was he thinking?

He stood up, seething, and marched over to the driver of the car. The driver had crashed into a tree.

When Tyrson reached the driver's side of the car, he found the man unconscious, blood gushing from a deep cut on his head. He was lucky he was out cold, because Tyrson was furious.

The thought of what could have happened to Meryl if he hadn't pulled her to safety was enough to make him see red. He was about to storm off in anger when Meryl's voice stopped him.

"We should help him," she said. "He's going to die if we don't get him to a hospital." Her voice was calm.

He turned his back on the driver and started to walk away. As far as he was concerned, the man could rot for all he cared. He'd tried to hurt Meryl, and that was unforgivable.

"Please," Meryl said, her voice small and quiet. He could hear the pleading in her words, and for a moment, he hesitated.

He didn't want to help the man who had put her in danger. But he knew he couldn't walk away. Not if Meryl was asking him to

Tyrson gritted his teeth as he yanked the door open, then pulled the driver out of the car. The man slumped in his arms, unconscious and bleeding profusely.

Meryl was standing a few feet away, shivering in the rain. Tyrson looked at her and sighed. They had to get the man to a hospital, and fast.

"I need you to help me with him," he said. "He's losing a lot of blood, and we need to get him to a hospital"

Meryl nodded, then ran to help Tyrson support the man's weight. Together, they half-carried, half-dragged him to Tyrson's car and managed to get him into the back seat.

Meryl stood at the open passenger door, about to get in, but then stopped and looked at Tyrson. "I'll take the back seat," she said quietly. Tyrson could tell she was trying to avoid being near him.

"You can sit," Tyrson said, his voice flat. "I won't get anywhere near you." She shot him a withering look.

Meryl hesitated for a moment, then nodded and climbed into the passenger seat, leaving a safe distance between them, before she turned to face the windshield.

The drive to the hospital seemed to take forever, and when they finally arrived, Tyrson and Meryl followed the paramedics as they rushed the unconscious man to the ICU. Once he was taken care of, they were left to wait for the doctor.

Meryl found the farthest seat in the waiting room and sat down, making sure she was as far away from Tyrson as possible. He looked over at her and noticed that her hair and clothes were soaked through, and she was shivering.

"Are you okay?" he asked, concern in his voice. Meryl's only response was to glare at him, her lips pressed into a thin line. Then she said coldly, "When the doctor comes, I'm leaving."

"It's cold and rainy outside, and if you go out there, you'll catch a chill," Tyrson said, his concern growing. "I can drive you home, if you want."

Meryl's expression turned stormy. "You don't need to play the hero now," she snapped. "I'm fine." She brushed her wet hair back from her face, her eyes glittering with anger.

"I'm not acting," Tyrson said, his voice soft but firm. "If you go out there, you'll get soaked to the bone. You'll never find a cab, and you could get sick. I'm just trying to help."

"You didn't care about me before," Meryl said, her voice rising in pitch and volume. "You never cared about me. I was on my own all these years, and I was fine. I don't need you now, and I never did."

"But you never understood my pain," Tyrson whispered.

"You never understood who I really am. And now it's too late." He added and tears ran down her cheeks. Tyrson's heart felt like it was breaking in half.

Just then, a doctor appeared in the doorway. "Mr. Tyrson?" he called out.

"How is he?" Tyrson asked, his voice shaking.

"He's doing well," the doctor replied. "We managed to treat his injuries, and he just needs to rest now. It's a good thing you got him here so quickly. Otherwise..." The doctor trailed off, his expression grave.

"How much do I owe you?" Tyrson asked, already reaching for his wallet.

"We'll settle up later," the doctor said.

As Tyrson walked back to where he'd last seen Meryl, his heart sank. She was nowhere to be found.

Tyrson left the hospital, his head spinning. Meryl's words kept echoing in his head, over and over again.  He couldn't get them out of his head, even as he drove home.

As he walked through the front door, his mother's voice called out to him from the living room. "Why are you home so late?" she asked. "You know I worry when you work late like this."

"Mom," he called out, walking into the living room. "I didn't know you were here."

She turned to face him, a frown on her face. "Do I need to tell you when I'm coming to my own son's house?" she asked, her voice sharp.

"No, no," Tyrson stammered. "I just... I just wasn't expecting you." He knew she'd be angry if he admitted he'd been dreading this moment. But her being here couldn't be a good thing.

"you're leaving tomorrow?" he asked, trying to hide his surprise. he had been expecting an interrogation, not a casual visit.

"yes," she said. "i just wanted to see how you were doing. and your house, of course." she smiled, but it didn't quite reach her eyes.

Tyrson felt a knot in his stomach. something wasn't right here. if she wasn't here to talk about his marriage, then what did she want?

"And Julia told me you're still the same," she continued. "That you haven't changed your behavior toward her. You know that no matter what you do, you will marry her and forget about Meryl." Her face was stern, her words matter-of-fact.

"That's not true, Mom," he said, rising to his feet. "I don't want to marry Julia. I never have. And I'm not going to."

"So you're saying Meryl is worth it?" she said, raising an eyebrow.

"I... I didn't say that," Tyrson stammered.

" you're getting married to her very soon, so forget that Meryl ever existed in your life" she said and he nodded helplessly.

He knew she wasn't aware of Meryl working in his company otherwise she would have sent her away from the company and his life.
