Chapter 18 - Grim Grinning Ghosts

After swimming for what seemed like a eternity, the boys and I finally caught a glimpse of the beach shore of Fantasyland. We kicked our tails as fast as we could, our bodies popping out of the water like corn being popped into popcorn, before splattering back into the water.

Not being in too much of a rush, we made our way to shore, crawling out of the water as still had our mermaid tails on, as the three of us gasped for air.

"Man, I felt like I was in a marathon or something. " I coughed, turning to my back as I looked up at the sky.

"Those guys in the Olympics got nothing on this." Sebastian agreed. "I'm beat."

"You can say that again." Ben replied, wiping the water off of his forehead.

"Okay; Those guys in the Olympics got nothing on us." Sebastian teased as Ben playfully slapped him in the arm.

As I took in a couple quick breathes, there was a sudden flash of light. I looked down at my fish tail to see it glowing, and the then the next thing I knew, it morphed back into my legs! Wearing my jeans and everything! They were even dry!

"Whoa! Guys, did you see that?" I exclaimed, looking over at them.

Their tails glowed as well, as they morphed back into human legs.

"Trippy." Ben grinned as he stretched his legs out before standing back up to his feet.

"Here Ava," I looked up to see Sebastian standing near me, his hand extended towards me.

I raised my hand towards it, but froze for a moment when I saw the glint of the mirror, hiding inside his jacket pocket. So it did belong to him, or did it? I've never seen him have it in his possession before. Was he hiding it this whole time? But why? And does he know about that face I keep seeing in the glass?

"Thanks, Seb." I smiled, taking his hand as he pulled me up to his feet.

The bubble containing my phone and Kimunicator popped in front of me as I caught both devices in my hands. I stuffed my iPhone in my jean pocket while keeping a firm grip on my Kimunicator. I was going to need it later if I was going to make my way back to the real world.

"Does anybody else find it weird? How Mickey was acting back there I mean." Ben spoke up.

"Yeah. I've never seen him seem so... spooked." Sebastian recalled, pausing momentarily as he cupped his chin.

"Do you think he may know something that we don't? Even this so called 'The Man'?" I asked.

"Maybe, it's a possibility anyway." Ben answered.

"I'm sure we'll have plenty of time to figure it out. Mickey said to take the rest of the day off, so let's go." Sebastian prompted.

Ben sighed with agreement, nodding his head. "Yeah, I guess. What a rough day. I don't know about you guys, but my day was a rollercoaster."

"No kidding. Getting kidnapped by the Dark Anomalies, escaping the Underworld only to wind up in the ocean, get zapped by a giant evil thundercloud, and turn into Mermaids." I listed, counting my fingers.

"My, weren't we productive today." Sebastian rolled his eyes with a playful grin.

"Ava, where did you drop in?" Ben asked me.

"Drop in?" I raised a brow at the boy with confusion.

"Where did you teleport to when you came to his world?" He rephrased himself.

My eyes widened as I facepalmed myself in the face before answering. "Oh! Star Command."

"Then that's where we'll go. Come on, me and Sebastian will walk you back." He waved, taking the lead.

"Thank you boys." I thanked with a smile as me and Sebastian followed the blonde boy, making our way off of the beach and onto one of the busy streets of Fantasyland.

Ben whistled, waving a carriage over as it pulled over next to us. The driver hopped off, opening the door for the three of us to get inside. I was the first to step in, cause you know, ladies first. Then Sebastian slipped inside and Ben was the last to come in, just before telling the driver where to go.

"Tomorrowland good sir." He instructed.

"Very good." The driver tipped his hat to the boy before shutting the door behind him, the blonde taking the seat next to Sebastian as I sat across from the boys.

The driver whipped the rails and I felt the carriage move forward. This was now my third time riding a carriage. The first time was last year actually, when me, my parents, and my grandparents did some sight seeing in a town not too far away from my grandparents place. Apparently the shipyard there was the place where the Black Pearl from Pirates of The Caribbean was built.

Pretty neat right?

They also serve some mighty fine fish and chips too.

The second time was when the boys and I finished our first training session together with Fairy Godmother, and we went to Cosmic Rays and discovered that Category Three Dark Anomaly.

I was so zoned out that a sudden bump during the ride made me snap back into reality, catching the glint of the mirror hiding in Sebastian's jacket again.

That thing was really started to bug me a little. It's been on my mind a lot recently. I think it's about time I started asking some questions to get some things cleared up.

"Hey Sebastian?" I asked.

The British Boy perked up, looking up at me. "What's up?"

"What's that thing in your jacket?" I asked.

He raised a brow at me, his arms crossed as he did so. "What's what?"

"That mirror, in your jacket pocket. I saw it when we were trying to escape the Dark Anomalies leader earlier today. Is it yours?" I asked him.

For some reason, he actually looked shocked upon hearing this. Surprisingly, so did Ben. Sebastian slowly unfolded his arms slowly, opening the side of his jacket and pulled out the mirror from his pocket.

"This old thing?" he showed me, swiping the glass with his fingers.

"Yeah... That design, it's from Beauty & The Beast, right?" I asked for clarification.

"Yeah it is. It's..." Sebastian slowed his speech as he sneaked a glance over at Ben, who was looking at him with a strange, skeptical look on his face. "It's not the real deal though, it's just a copy of it."

"A copy?" I asked him.

"Yeah, so it can't exactly do that whole, smoke spiral thing the real one does in the movies." he explained, waving his hands in the air for dramatic effect.

Okay, now I was getting lost. I raised my hands up in the air, looking confused. "But... But that can't be! I saw it go off myself!"

"...What?" He asked, his face frozen.

"After you got hit with the lightning, I tried to go get you but Ben pulled me back, using his powers to create a protective force bubble around your body so the two of us could push you to safety. It must have fallen out before he activated it, because right when we pushed you through Atlantica's protective barrier and Ben got zapped too, I found it, and when I took it in my hand, the smoke started spinning around in the glass and a face was going to appear on it." I explained.

"A face?" Ben asked, before looking over at Sebastian. "Did you know about this?"

Sebastian shrugged nervously at the blonde as he sighed, turning his attention back on me. "Okay, what did this face look like? Was it a boy or a girl?"

"I'm... I'm pretty sure it was a boy. He looked so familiar to me too! He had black hair, brown eyes, light tanned skin..." I explained frantically. "What does it mean? I have to know who it was!"

"Avalyn, I don't know if you should---"

"But I want to Sebastian! I have to!" I stated. "Please, let me just see it, just one more time!"

My eyes looked so pleading towards the boys. With a deep sigh, Sebastian loosened his grip in the mirror as he began to extend it towards me. That was until Ben's hand shot out and grabbed Sebastian's wrist.

"Seb, wait--"

"It's okay Ben." Sebastian quickly assured. "I know what I'm doing."

The two boys stared at each other, eyes never daring to blink. After what seemed like an eternity, exchanging my glances between them nervously, Ben released his grip on the Attack Wizard's wrist.

"Sorry about that." He apologized.

"It's okay." Sebastian replied with a smile. He sighed again, finally turning his attention back to me, extending the mirror towards me. "Here, take it."

I slowly raised my hands in the air, taking the mirror and holding it at an angle to my face. I watched as the green and pink spirals came back, spinning around and around the glass until the image finally took form, and it wasn't blurry this time.

When I saw it though, I couldn't help but smile a little.

"What is it?" Ben asked me.

I slowly lowered the mirror, so that the boys could see the image on the glass.

"That's my boyfriend. His name is Santiago." I answered.

"...Wow. Not too bad looking if I do say so myself." Sebastian complimented.

"But, why would the mirror show me his face?" I questioned. "I don't get it."

"Yeah, I don't get it either," Ben spoke up, turning around to face Sebastian. "Care to explain why that is?"

"Um, well..." Sebastian shook his head, seeming nervous.

But why did he feel that way? Was he afraid of telling me about the mirror? I inched to the edge of my seat, placing a hand on his knee. "Sebastian," his head moved up to meet my gaze as I smiled at the boy. "It's okay, you can tell us."

"Uh, okay, the thing is, this mirror, while it may look exactly like the original... it has a different operation from the real mirror entirely." He began.

"So, what does it do?" I asked him, shifting back into my seat.

"Um... it has a smiliar affect to Jack Sparrow's compass. But instead of showing the thing you want most... it shows you... the person you miss dearly." He slowly answered.

"So... then, if I'm seeing his face, then... I must miss Santiago." I realized.

Why didn't I think of that? Of course I've been having the time of my life on this trip, but it had completely crossed my mind that I missed someone I cared about deeply back home.

"I wish he could be here... to see all of this. You think he'd make a great Disney Wizard?" I asked the boys.

Both of them seemed to be caught of guard by the question at first. But the two glanced over at the each other, nodding before turning back to face me with a grin.

"I think he'd do just swell." Sebastian answered.

I smiled back at the boys, handing Sebastian back the mirror. "So Sebastian, who do you miss the most?"

"Um, I don't know---"

Before he could continue any further, there was a sudden beep. A very familiar and catchy beep.

I picked up my Kimunicator which I had placed to the side. It was beeping and vibrating, the screen flashing red.

"What the?"

"Dark Anomaly Detected."

The screen flashed again, displaying a white arrow as it pointed to the upper left, and it slowly began to turn as the carriage proceed to move forward.

"It's picking up something." I spoke, moving the Kimunicator to follow the arrow.

The boys leaned forward, taking a look at the screen themselves before Ben leaned back, banging his fist against the wall.

"Hey! Can you pull over please, sir?" He yelled.

The carriage served to the side, coming to a halt. I saw my chance, jumping out of the carriage before the driver could open the door for me. The boys followed out behind me, Ben tipping the driver as he apologized for his outburst.

"Something wrong?"

"Just the usual Wizard business my good man." Sebastian answered. "I'm afraid we'll have to cut our ride short." He looked up, spotting something in the distance as he pointed straight a head. "You can go a head and take those ghosts."

"Ghosts?!" I peeked up, steering my head away from the screen of the Kimunicator to see three familiar ghosts fly by me, laughing as they swooped right into the carriage.

"Were those...?"

"Grim Grinning Ghosts, come out to socialize!" Ben sang with a laugh.

"Humorous, sir." The driver tipped his hat again before climbing back into his seat, taking off down the road.

The three of us watched it take off down the road before the three of us turned back around, facing the dead like path.

"Where to Ava?" Sebastian asked.

"Um..." I looked at the screen, the arrow pointing forward. "Straight a head, I guess."

I lead the way, following the arrow on the screen as I occasionally glanced up at my surroundings. The place looked like it was in the fall season. The plants, trees, even the grass looked like they were dead or were going to die.

Where had I seen all of this before?

"Uh," Ben placed a hand on my shoulder. "Ava?"

I stopped, looking over at the boy to see him pointing at something. I glanced over at Sebastian who just absolutely starstruck.

Finally, I turned my attention to what Ben was pointing at, and I froze.

I was so scared, I nearly dropped the Kimunicator upon seeing the very familiar house.

"You have arrived at your destination."

The Haunted Mansion.
