In several attempts of the story, Shintaro was a part of a Light and Dark War that ended in The Dark Lord's defeat - but wiped out the rest of the Light race.

When me and my sister first created Shintaro, we made him several hundred years old - because dragons could live for a long time. It was merely explained in the books that Shintaro was a part of the war that ended in the wiping out of the Light race. Originally, he was the last one left - until I gave Chase (Canyon) Light Magic too.
