Chapter Twenty-Three

*Addi's POV*

"Alright, I'm not backing down! You think you can intimidate me with your centuries of experience? Bring it on!" I declared, with my voice brimming with mock bravado as I leaned forward, while determination was sparkling within my eyes.

It felt as if there were a camera panning out to reveal the outdoor patio of the Cullen house around me, where I was fully immersed in this moment. Seated at the rustic table, I was engaged in a spirited game of chess against Felix of the Volturi Guard, while Jane and Alec watched with a mix of amusement and intrigue, clearly enjoying the tension simmering between us on my left. On my right sat Demetri, who grinned widely as Felix contemplated his next move. Spending time with the Guard was important to me as Aro, Marcus, and Caius' mate—and the future Volturi Queen—so I relished the opportunity to get to know them better, especially as I faced off against the strong and intimidating Felix in this game of strategy.

"Come on, Felix! You may have been lurking in the shadows for centuries, but I'm not afraid to take you on." I teased, my confidence radiating as I moved my knight forward with a flourish grin. The playful challenge drew a chorus of 'oohs' from Jane, Alec, and Demetri, with their reactions underscoring the delightful tension of the moment. I could see the glimmer of excitement in their crimson eyes, making it evident that they were relishing this interaction and delighting in the friendly competition that had developed between us. The air was electric with playful rivalry and I experienced a surge of exhilaration as I embraced the challenge of facing off against someone as formidable as Felix.

Jane chuckled softly, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "You really think you can outsmart a vampire? How adorable." She quipped, leaning back in her chair with an amused smirk. Alec, ever the quieter of the pair, nodded in agreement, adding, "It's brave of you to challenge him. No human has never and probably wouldn't even dare to play chess against someone like Felix."

Felix, exuding his usual exuberant charm, leaned in closer and remarked, "Bravery or pure foolishness? Let's see which it is!" His voice was laced with playful seriousness as he moved his piece with dramatic flair, with a broad grin lighting up his face. I couldn't help but laugh, my spirit remaining unshaken. "Perhaps a little of both! But honestly, if I can stand my ground against vampires, what else could possibly scare me?" I replied, my light-hearted defiance serving as both a display of strength and a means to connect with the Guard.

As the game progressed, I leaned in closer, as my brow furrowed in concentration as I studied the chessboard laid out before me. The pieces seemed to dance under my gaze and I weighed each potential move with the seriousness of a general planning a battle. Felix, ever the playful challenger, couldn't resist taunting me. "Come on, Addi! Just give it up already. I think we both know I've won this one!" He said, his tone was light, but there was a teasing edge to it that made the others chuckle, with their eyes glinting with amusement.

I shot him a playful glare, with a smile tugging at the corners of my lips. "How can I give up when I've got you in checkmate?" I shot back confidently, with my voice steady with determination. The words hung in the air for a moment as Felix's laughter faded and he leaned forward, peering at the board with newfound scrutiny. The rest of the Guard leaned in as well, as their interest piqued. "Wait a minute. What do you mean checkmate?" Jane asked, with her voice laced with curiosity as she leaned over to get a better view. Felix's confidence wavered as he examined the arrangement of pieces on the board. "No way. This can't be right." He murmured under his breath, with his bravado faltering.

But it was. With a triumphant grin, I pointed to the board, with my finger hovering over Felix's king. "You see? Your king is trapped! You can't move it anywhere and my queen is ready to take him out. Checkmate!" I explained, and I simply knocked down his king.

The realization dawned on Felix and his eyes widened in disbelief. "No! This isn't happening!" He exclaimed, throwing his hands up in despair. The others erupted into laughter, as the sound was ringing out like music against the backdrop of the late afternoon sky. Demetri clapped Felix on the back, unable to contain his mirth. "Looks like you've met your match, Felix! A human has bested you!" He said. Alec chuckled quietly, shaking his head, while Jane teased, "Maybe you should have taken her more seriously from the start. You've been outsmarted by your own human opponent!"

Felix feigned indignation, while crossing his arms dramatically. "I demand a rematch! This was just a fluke!" He demanded. But the teasing in his voice was unmistakable and even he couldn't help but smile at the absurdity of being outplayed by me. I leaned back in my chair, with my laughter mingling with that of the Guard. "A fluke? I don't think so! You're just going to have to accept that I'm the new chess champion among the Volturi!" I said, with my playful confidence that only fueled the laughter around the table.

As the laughter died down, Jane, still amused, leaned closer to Addi. "You know, if you keep beating our strongest member, you might have to consider taking on the Kings next. They could use a good challenge!" She suggested. "Not to mention, it would be quite the spectacle!" Demetri added with a grin, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "The Volturi Kings defeated by their own human mate! The rumors would spread like wildfire!" Alec added. My cheeks flushed with a mix of embarrassment and pride at the thought. "Oh, I don't know about that. I think I'll stick to challenging Felix for now!" I said, as I shot a playful glance at Felix, who was still trying to redeem himself by rearranging the pieces on the board in a futile attempt to strategize for a rematch.

"Come on, let me have my moment of victory!" I implored with a laugh, raising my hands in surrender as Felix grumbled good-naturedly. Alec, who had been quietly observing, finally chimed in, "He'll never let it go. I know we certainly won't. I mean, how many individuals can say they've beaten a member of the Volturi Guard at chess, let alone Felix?" We all laughed once again, except for Felix, who was fighting to keep his laughter at bay. The playful atmosphere surrounded us like a gentle embrace, filling me with a sense of camaraderie that made this moment truly unforgettable. "Alright, alright," Felix finally conceded, a reluctant smile breaking through, "you win this round, but don't think I'll go easy on you next time!"

Once the moment of my victory and the infectious laughter settled, I leaned in forward, as my curiosity piqued. "So, if all of you are part of the Volturi Guard, does that mean you all have special abilities?" I asked, intriguingly. The atmosphere shifted slightly as the group exchanged knowing glances, clearly accustomed to the weight of their gifts and what they meant within the Volturi hierarchy.

"Yes, we do." Demetri replied with a grin, leaning back in his chair. "I'm a tracker. I can find anyone, anywhere, as long as I have a scent or a mental image of the person in question." He explained, with his tone casual, but the gravity of his ability was evident. Being a tracker came with immense responsibility, especially for the Volturi, who often had to locate rogue vampires or those who posed a threat to their secretive world.

Felix chimed in next, his voice booming with pride, "And I have supernatural strength. I can lift and throw things that would crush most beings. It comes in handy during battles, but I also use it for fun, like when I decide to show off." He flexed his arms playfully, eliciting chuckles from the others. Addi marveled at the thought of such power, envisioning Felix lifting enormous boulders or effortlessly overpowering opponents. "I would like to see you show it off with a challenge against Emmett in an arm wrestling match some time, Felix." I responded, with a playful grin. "Yeah. We'll see about that one day, Addi." Felix replied, teasingly.

Jane, who had been quietly observing, finally spoke up, "My ability is a bit different. I can create an illusion of pain in others, especially vampires. It's a very effective tool in combat, as it can incapacitate an opponent without physical harm." Her voice was calm, but there was an underlying intensity to it that made me shiver slightly. I couldn't help but feel a mix of admiration and apprehension at the thought of such a power. "That sounds incredibly powerful. But does it hurt them? I mean, is it real pain?" I asked, as my curiosity deepened. Jane nodded, with a serious expression. "Yes, it feels very real to them, even if it's just an illusion. It can incapacitate someone long enough for us to gain the upper hand." She replied.

Alec, ever the supportive twin, leaned over to Jane. "Why don't you show Addi what you can do? It might be interesting to see it in action." He suggested. Demetri, always up for a bit of mischief, added, "How about testing it on Felix? He can handle it!"

As Demetri encouraged testing Jane's ability on Felix, a flicker of apprehension crossed my face. The idea of witnessing such a power being unleashed, especially on someone as strong and formidable as Felix, sent a shiver down my spine. I had always been fascinated by the supernatural world of the vampires, but this was a whole new level of intensity. "Are you sure about this?" I asked. "I mean, I thought vampires didn't feel anything, not even pain." I pointed out, as my eyes darted between the two siblings, with concern etched on my features.

Jane met my gaze with unwavering confidence. "That's not true, Addi. While we might not feel pain in the same way humans do, we can still experience it—albeit in a different manner. My ability creates a powerful illusion, making it feel very real to the one affected." She explained. There was an intensity in her voice that conveyed both the weight of her power and the responsibility that came with it. "Like what I'm about to demonstrate on Felix right now." She added, taking Alec and Demetri's suggestion as she turned toward him.

Felix was on the verge of objecting, as his hands lifted in protest. "Oh, no. Absolutely not—" He started to say, but Jane's gaze was already fixed on him, with her expression shifting into one of intense focus. "Pain." She commanded softly, her voice imbued with authority. In an instant, Felix's demeanor evaporated, replaced by overwhelming agony. He fell to his knees, shock and discomfort etched across his features as he gasped as the illusion of pain was surging through him with a force that caught everyone off guard.

My initial fear morphed into a mix of awe and empathy as I watched Felix struggle. "Oh my God, is he okay?" I questioned, with my voice laced with concern, glancing between the two. Jane maintained her focus, with her own expression unyielding as she controlled the illusion. "He's fine, Addi. It's just an illusion. He'll be back to normal in a moment." She replied, nonchalantly. After a few tense seconds, Felix, still on his knees, groaned dramatically, with his hands clutching at the ground as if trying to anchor himself against the invisible torment. "Alright, alright! I get it! You're powerful!" He exclaimed, laced with discomfort in his voice.

In an instant, Jane released him from the grip of her ability. Felix shook his head, blinking as if trying to clear a fog in his mind. Demetri, amused by the entire display and clearly enjoying Felix's plight, turned to me with a grin. "So, what do you think about that?" He asked. I took a moment to gather my thoughts, still slightly shaken but undeniably intrigued. "That was... frighteningly interesting." I replied, with my voice steadying as I faced the group. The admission earned me a round of chuckles from Jane, Alec, and Demetri, who appreciated my candidness. Felix, now back on his feet, shot a glare at Jane. "You could've warned me!" He protested, though his tone was playful.

Afterwards, Alec share his own ability. "Well, my power is a bit different. I can remove senses from the palm of my hands. It's quite handy in a fight." He said casually, with his expression shifting to one of playful seriousness. Felix, still recovering from the previous demonstration, paled at the thought. His eyes widened and he instinctively backed away slightly, raising his hands as if to ward off any potential threat. "Don't even think about using it on me, Alec!" He exclaimed, with his voice filled with horror. The image of being rendered unable to see or hear—or worse, feel —was enough to send him into a slight panic.

I couldn't help but laugh at the dynamic unfolding before me. "You may be the strong one of the Volturi, Felix, but there's definitely a scaredy cat lurking within you!" I said, with my teasing tone cut through the tension, and the others erupted into laughter once again. The lightheartedness of the moment was infectious, and even Felix, despite his initial embarrassment, found himself chuckling along with us. "Okay, okay, I'll admit it. I might be strong, but I'm also not a fan of being helpless!" Felix said, shaking his head in mock defeat but unable to suppress his grin.

With a mischievous glint in his eye, Alec leaned back in his chair, clearly relishing the playful banter. "It's a good thing I'm not the one in charge of the Volturi's reputation. Imagine the stories: 'Fearsome Felix, the strongest of the Guard, brought low by his own imagination!'" He said, and I couldn't help but laugh along with everyone else. The laughter echoed around the patio and I could sense the camaraderie hanging in the atmosphere, a deep connection formed through our playful banter.

In that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of belonging. I had stepped into a world filled with danger and mystery, yet it was also infused with warmth and humor. This connection we shared, forged through our experiences and playful interactions, was something I had never expected to find among such ancient and powerful beings. It was a reminder that even in a world that could be so daunting, there were moments of joy and friendship that made it all worthwhile.
