THIRTY-SEVEN. even if we're miles apart

COLLEGE WAS something that Rory wanted. She had the privilege to go to any college she wanted to (if they accepted her) and have her parents pay for it out of pocket if scholarships weren't given to her.

Rory had always known that she could do whatever she wanted and wouldn't have to pay a dime out of her own pocket. She knew she was lucky and didn't have to worry about her future... but she also knew others weren't as lucky as she was or would ever be.

At this current moment, Robby had been over at the Brewer house because the ceiling of the Diaz house had caved in, and dirty, piss water had been falling from it. He wouldn't be spending the night because he still wasn't on the best terms with her parents, but they allowed the boy over because Rory would find one way to be with him.

Rory sat at her desk as she submitted her paper to Brown. She wanted to get a rejection or acceptance letter as soon as possible. It was her dream school because her mother had been accepted but soon dropped out once she got a contract with one of the top modeling agencies. Rory wanted to finish what her mother hadn't done. She wanted to show everyone that she could do something without her parent's names attached to it.

After submitting her paper she turned in her seat and stood with a stretch. As she walked on her tiptoes, she flopped down onto Robby who let out a soft groan and wrapped her arms around her torso.

Rory lifted her head up with a small smile painted on her face and took her fingers to gently move the hair from his face.

The one thing that bothered Robby the most about all this college stuff was the fact that because of his past, him getting into college was slim to none, and the fact that Rory would be 2,989 miles from him if she were to get into Brown, which he didn't doubt. Plus, he hadn't mentioned that he wasn't applying anywhere.

That meant no matter where Rory would go, they would always be miles apart.

"What's on your mind?" Rory asked in a whisper.

Robby sighed, his hands running up and down Rory's lower back.

"Brown." He muttered.

Rory's smile flattened and replaced with a softening expression.

"What about Brown?" She asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Robby sighed. It was now or never and never wasn't really an option for him because Rory was going to college regardless.

"I haven't applied anywhere." He said.

Rory's soft smile returned and she let out an even softer laugh. "You still have time." She reassured. "Remember we talked about community colleges first then-"

"I know." He said. "Rory, I don't think college is for me. Especially after... everything I've done. It's on my record. I'd be lucky to get a job after high school." He whispered.

Rory quipped her lip to the side and allowed her head to tip slightly in the same direction. They had talked about college a handful of times, but not going was something new.

Was she upset? No, not really. She wasn't going to push him into going. They both knew (as bad as it sounded coming from her) that he wasn't getting into an Ivy League and that wasn't because he was trying in school.

With a soft sigh, Rory plastered her smile back on her face.

"You'll be fine after high school, Robby."

"What makes you so sure?"

Rory smiled. "Because I believe in you." She muttered. "I could say all the cheesy Disney shit my parents said to each other to try and make you feel better, but it's not gonna work because we're not living in 2010." She joked. "You don't have to apply anywhere. College isn't for everyone. Belle isn't going."

Robby furrowed his brows. "She's not."

"No." She answered. "She's working with our mom immediately after she graduates. Modeling for like, Vogue or something."

Robby and Rory shared a quiet laugh, his hands continuing to massage into her hips.

Robby licked his lips. "You're not upset with me?"

For the longest time, Robby felt like he was everyone's biggest disappointment. That he had nothing to live up to and that no one could just... be there for him.

Then he met her.

"No." Rory chuckled. "I'm glad that you know that you don't want to go rather than going and wasting your time there."

Without another word, their lips met in a soft, tender kiss.

Rory's lips brushed against Robby's, her mouth moving in slow, gentle strokes. She tasted the hint of saltiness on his lips.

Robby's hands stilled on her hips, his fingers curled around her skin as he pulled her in closer. He returned the kiss with equal gentleness, his lips tracing the shape of hers.

Rory's hands cradled Robby's face, her fingers grazing his jawline as she pulled him closer, deepening the kiss.

Robby's fingers relaxed, sinking into the curves of her hips as he crushed his mouth to hers. He savored the taste of her, the sweetness of her lips mixed with the subtle tang of salt on his own skin.

This was bliss.

This is all that Robby Keene wanted in life and he'd finally had it.
