Chapter 14: Sound of Silence

My dad is insane. The paint drill is something out of a trainer's wet dream. The paint drill is where you have paint on our boxing gloves and when you hit your opponent the paint will mark your opponent. The drill is to catch illegal hits. The issue is once time goes on the paint will dry on our gloves and will dry on our gloves and will start to scratch our skins. So, you either dodge, block, or get messed up.

On my side stood Aubrey and Brooke. Their only job was to keep me hydrated and wipe the paint off of my body. Erin and Katerina were with Ky. They had the same job, but they also had to communicate my dad's directions.

I fear that Brooke is going to faint just looking at me.

"Where are your abs?" Aubrey questioned randomly.

"I don't need abs."

"Ky has abs."

"Ky is a boxer. He uses his abdominis muscles more. I am a weight lifter. I focus on my arms and chest."

"Do you like Ky's abs." Aubrey asked with a snicker.

Okay. She is trying to get a reaction out of me.

"I like your body Ty." Brooke whispered.

"So does Ky." Aubrey shot back.

"I want new teammates!" I yelled.

"Can you three shut up! Ky can't focus with all this noise!" My dad yelled. Now I see where I get all of my inappropriate deaf jokes from.

Watched as Ky was examining his gloves which were soaked in white paint. I know that he was nerding out because the gloves belonged to my dad. He seemed confused with why he had to wear the goggles as well. Katerina was doing her best trying to sign to him what was about to happen. The more she signed the more terrified Ky looked.

"Alright. I am going to use this flag to signal the match. If I have to step in to break you two up I am going to be pissed." My dad said.

This is going to sound super corny and played out, but the second my dad waved that flag was the second I officially stepped in his world.

No, really that line is played out. Sports movies mostly. Sometimes superheroes movies. The occasional romance stories when the good girl visit's the bad boy's family and the girl is in way over her head but he is hot so the risk is worth it.

Anyway, back to my cliché moment. Here I am standing in the center of a boxing ring against an opponent who is clearly better than me. The way that Ky holds himself is intimidating. How serious he is right now. How serious my dad is. This is more than a sport to them. This is a lifestyle.

I glanced over at my dad to attempt to see him in a new light.

"Ty, focus!" My dad warned.

When I turned back to face Ky I took a literal fist full of paint to the face. The impact didn't knock me down, but Ky was able to retract his second punch towards my face, and used his other hand to hit me in the gut.

"Commit to the knockout Kyle. Don't punk out." My dad screamed so loud that there was a chance that Ky heard him.

Ky sent another hookshot to my face. The taste of blood filled my mouth as a ringing sound entered my ears. That punch was enough for me to knock me on my back.

I turned my head to the side to try to stop the room from spinning. I was caught off guard when I looked into Ky's eyes. He must have laid down next to me when I didn't get up right away.

My head is throbbing and the ringing in my ears was overtaken by a calm silence. Is this what Ky hears? The calmness of the world.

I felt an involuntary smile come across my face. Nice hit. I moved my lips, but I still couldn't hear my own words. I'm scared. I admitted.

You're okay.

With one swift movement Ky was back on his feet. I struggled to get back up myself.

For a second it just felt like only Ky and I were in the room. The match started when Ky nodded.

My hearing came back as I blocked my face from Ky's punch. I heard the orders being yelled by my dad, the cheering from the girls, and the sound of the impact of the paint against our skins.

The sound of silence. The sound I longed for the most in life. The sound was so scary, sadly it was just a little paint in my ears. Ky has to live with this sound all the time.
