||Chapter 41!!||

||Nagisa||

Ever since the first year...To put is simply, I looked up to Karma...

"Hey, sir, what's this here?" Karma asked the teacher.

He came up to the teacher's desk at the front of the class and pointed to a question in the 2nd year math textbook that he didn't seem to understand.

"Ah, Akabane! Moving into second-year territory already?" Our new teacher asked as began helping Karma out.

He did what he wanted and was completely unafraid. And yet, he was smart and could do anything.

"Okay, that's all I was wondering about. I've got the rest." Karma said after the teacher explained it.

Karma then took his workbook back and walked out the class, "Hey, Akabane!" The teacher called out to him.

"I'm leaving early—I'm thirsty." Karma announced.

If only I could be like that...That's how I felt, in my ordinariness.

"Whoa. No way! Nazzoni directed Sonic Ninja? How cool is that?" Karma asked, coming up behind me when he noticed what comic I was reading in the school store after class.

"Ooh, and it opens today? Let's go, Shiota!"

"Uh, yeah!"

So I was happy when he talked to me, and we started to hang out. That was halfway through our first year. But we couldn't stay friends for long.

"Where is that new transfer student?" I heard our teacher mutter as he checked his watch and tapped his foot.

He continued to watch his watch for another five minutes before he let out a sigh of defeat and shook his head. He then turned to the board, "She must not be coming after all...I guess I'll start class—" Suddenly the doors of the classroom were slammed open, startling everyone in the class. In the doorway was a girl unlike any other I've ever seen. She was just so...pretty, and the way her hair moved when she ran into the class only to fall perfectly back into place. And those eyes she had...they were so fiery and passionate. Even without knowing her it was obvious to tell what kind of person she was.

"I'm here! I'm here! Sorry I'm late!!" She announced.

The teacher let out another sigh and hung his head and he rested his chalk back onto the ledge. "It's fine..." He sighed, "Introduce yourself to the class..." He said, pinching the bridge of his nose. The girl then walked towards the teachers desk and stood in front of it. Her eyes surveyed the room, but lingered on mine, causing my eyes to widened. She looked a bit flustered and she quickly looked away nervously. She cleared her throat and as if by magic the blush in her face instantly diminished,

"Hello! I am you're new classmate, Y/N L/N! Please take care of me, I'm here on a sports scholarship!" She announced.

This girl, Y/n bowed at us politely. The teacher then instructed her on where to sit,

"Alright, that's quite enough, you can take a seat next to Karma. Karma, raise your hand."

Up went Karma's hand, and he grinned at the new student who didn't seem to be amused. As she walked to her seat she passed by me, and yet again we made eye contact, I looked away. When I looked back at her, she and Karma already seemed to be deep in conversation, although it looked like Karma was doing most of the talking.

A few months later is when things seemed to fall apart.

"You Karma?" A delinquent high schooler approached me and Karma as we were walking home together.

The delinquent had a friend with him, one with a bandage over his eye. I had no idea why they knew Karma's name or why they decided to approach us while we were taking a short cut through an alley. "You got nerve, beating up a guy's pal like that!" The delinquent said. I glanced at the guy again. 'I guess that's how he got that...' I thought.

"Huh? News to me. Besides he started it. He was harassing one of my pretty little lady friends.

"Bullshit! He told me that she—"

Karma tossed his bag up into the air and both me and the delinquents all looked up at it. Karma then punched the delinquent in the face then his friend. I caught Karma's bag while he got ontop of the leader and began laying it in on him.

"Can't hear you! What was that? Say it again!" Karma mocked the guy, "Come on!"

He could stand where he did because he had the strength to win in studying and fighting both. His was a stage I could never hope to share. He must have gotten bored, being on my stage with me.

"Hey, N/n-chan!! How about you take me out to dinner tonight? I'm feeling, sushi" Karma said to Y/n, who was packing up her things for the day.

"Ugh! I just bought you food last Monday!! Besides, I've got practice!!" She barked.

"Okay, then after. Duh, use your brain, idiot!" He teased her, as he took her bag from off her desk and slung it over his shoulder.

He knocked on her head like it was a door in which she was quick to push his hand off.

"Stop that!! And I can't! I'm broke!!" She said as they began walking out of class.

"Okay, well, then get some money, or..." He began.

Karma then leaned close to Y/n's ear and whispered something in it that made her whole face turn red. "Okay okay! How about we just get dessert instead!! I might have a coupon or something!!" She exclaimed, her face still fiery.

"Now that's what I'm talking about!!" He cheered, patting Y/n on her shoulder.

Right before they left though, Y/n stopped. Karma looked down at her, "Huh? Why'd you stop, idiot?" He asked her.

"I forgot to do something..." I heard her say.

She then turned around and looked at me. Karma only glanced at me before he averted his gaze back onto her. "Bye Nagisa! See you tomorrow!!" She said to me, just like she did everyday.

A smiled back at her and waved as well, "Bye, N/n-chan!" I told her. Her face turned pink and Karma was quick to notice this,

"Come on...let's get out of here..." He said ushering me out of the classroom, "Don't you have practice to get to??"

"Okay! Okay! I'm going!!" She hissed right before he shut the door.

By the time he had gotten suspended, we'd gone back to being plain old classmates.

||Karma||

He's a harmless little mouse, making him one of the few people a combative guy like me didn't have to be careful around. But looking back, I put that distance between us...because there was already a part of him back then that made me uneasy.

After finally getting my tray of fast food, I walked back to where Nagisa was supposed to be sitting, he wasn't there. "Huh? Where'd he go?" I thought out loud, "Nagisa!" I called out to him.

I could put my guard down around him...

That's when I felt it. Utter shock, the helplessness of being caught with your pants down. He had...snuck up on me. When he poked me, and I didn't know he was right there, I knew...

"I'm right here, Karma, didn't you see me?" Nagisa asked.

...but something kept me on alert. Something that could kill me in my sleep one day.

"---Sorry 'bout that, Nagisa! You're just so small." I played it off, sitting across from him.

Nagisa's phone went off and he was quick to react to it, texting back the moment he received the alert,

"Who are you texting?" I asked.

He let out an embarrassed chuckle, "Oh, it's just N/n-chan! We're trying to figure out a time for me to help her study since she's so busy with sports!!" He told me.

"Oh, I see...You know, that new girl has really taken a liking to you, Nagisa-kun."

"Oh? You think so? I wouldn't say that!! It's obvious that she's much more interested in you than me!! We're just classmates!!" He was quick to say.

I leaned back in my chair, "If you say so..."

He was so honest and good, unlike me, that my anxiety had to be all in my head. Still, he had this mysterious...something that I wanted to drag out of him and crush. And that part is scary. But there's no point in beating him in fights and in class.

I walked into class earlier than usual and saw Y/n chatting with Nagisa at his desk. This was nothing new, but still there was something about this specific interaction that irked me that day.

"I just really wanted to say thank you for letting me borrow your umbrella yesterday!! I really appreciated it!!" I heard her say as I began walking past her to sit in my seat.

"It was nothing, really! You just seemed like you needed it more than me!" Nagisa replied.

"Well, uh...in any case...I'd like to take you out...on a date...to show how thankful I am to you!! And also to um...tell you something..."

Nagisa blushed, "A date? You mean...as---"

"A date date!" She clarified, "I have something I want to tell you! Something I've been meaning to tell you for a while now!!" She said.

Nagisa's face turned red as he looked up at Y/n basically pouring her heart out to him. He then glanced at me, I don't know why he did, but it pissed me off. Did he think I would care or something?? Nagisa then looked back at her,

"Uh...I don't think I should..." He replied.

"HUh? Wh-why?" She asked.

He glanced at me a again, ticking me off further, "I just...I just don't think that's a really good idea, though I'm flattered, really! I have other plans after class today, that's all. Sorry..."

"Oh...I see.."

Even facing away from me, I could tell that she was heartbroken. And why the hell did he keep glancing at me?? He just rejected the only girl who had ever had a crush on him The arrogance...the pure idiocrasy and yet he still had the audacity t not even give her the decency of looking at her and because he was too busy looking at me...

This whatever-it-is is something else altogether. He doesn't realize that he's already won, and I'm not going to let him figure it out...It was hard to handle, and before I knew it, we had drifted apart. Now, for the first time, in year 4, we're up on the same stage: assassination.

And we need to win to get our points across!
