Chapter 51 - Blood, bone, and broken heart
'Cut off the head, and the body will flounder. Waste not thy time nor thy breath on the Leviathan herd. Point thy blade at the heart of their master, for from him springs all their messages. Leviathan cannot be slain but by the bone of a righteous mortal, washed in the three bloods of the fallen: a fallen Angel, the ruler of fallen humanity, and the father of the fallen beasts.'
As far as prophetic instructions went, these were actually pretty straightforward. Basically, it said, kill the main honcho, and the rest of the baddies will follow. They already had one ingredient down, thanks to Castiel's contribution; the blood of a fallen angel. The ruler of fallen humanity could only mean a demon high up on the food chain - meaning the King of Hell - but the Winchesters already took care of that as well. If they gathered the other ingredients, Crowley would give them his blood (if not, Allegra could always make him). Two down, two to go.
Dean and Sam were off to find the father of fallen beasts, aka an alpha. But since Crowley got rid of them to find purgatory, pickings were slim. Luckily, he left the vampire alpha alive. So, whilst the brothers went shopping for the blood, Allegra tried to find the final piece of the puzzle; the bone of a righteous mortal. Unfortunately, modern times hadn't brought forth too many of those. The best bet would be someone of the clergy, but even that proved a little more difficult than Allegra had imagined at first.
Man, these people suck. Bishop who couldn't keep his hands to himself, Mother Superior who makes Miss Trunchbull sound like Fairy Godmother, a novice who read Carrie too many times... Damn hypocritical- oh, hold the phone... Okay, now we're getting somewhere.
Allegra's eyes wandered over a page that held records of a recluse nunnery in the middle of nowhere that just so happened to have its own crypt.
Sister Mary Benedict... too young. Sister Mary Eunice... pass. Sister Mary Constant... huh, looks like we have a winner.
Allegra closed the record book, finding herself very tempted to take it with her and drop it at a national news station. But she decided against it. She would let someone else start that particular fire. There were more important things to take care of anyway, like going to Mary Constant's grave and getting a bone to make a weapon out of it so they could finally get rid of Dick Roman and his Leviathans. And once that was done...
'Look, Allegra, I... there's something I need to tell you. But I can't right now, not with the others and... and Sam. Can you... meet me back here when all this is done? Please?'
The last thing Allegra wanted was to go back to her childhood home (her previous intentions to stay had definitely gone out the window after taking one last sweep of the area and finding absolutely no supernatural activity whatsoever). But Dean wouldn't have asked her to do so if it wasn't important. He knew how she struggled with her past. Better than anyone, really.
Why did I hug him? Why the hell did I hug him?! He probably thinks we can get back together now.
Well, do you want to get back together with Dean?
No.
Do you want to get together with Sam then?
No.
Liar.
"Oh great, I'm arguing with myself again. Damn Winchesters."
The bitter truth was that Allegra didn't know what she wanted anymore. She felt connected with both brothers, but too much had already happened for it to ever work out with either of them.
On the one hand, there was Dean. There was no denying Allegra still loved him deeply. He was good and gentle and protective... but he hurt her. The minute it got rough, Dean had searched for a way out, finding it in the arms of an Amazon (granted, he'd been tricked, but it was still his own choice to say yes to the bitch).
And then there was Sam. He was sweeter than Dean and definitely more patient, and he wasn't afraid to say (or at least think) that he was in love with her. There was no denying that Sam would treat her better - as long as Lucifer stayed out of his head anyway. But Allegra couldn't feel for Sam what she felt for Dean.
And there was, of course, the extra problem that no matter which brother she chose, there would always be the lingering question of 'what if'? She'd gone through the suspicions and jealousy with Dean, and Sam was already showing signs of the same behavior.
Come on, Allegra, focus! Set your priorities; get the nun's bone, kill the Leviathans, and meet Dean to see what he has to say. You can decide what to do after that.
Allegra left the archive room beneath the diocese of Kansas City and reappeared inside the nunnery's crypt, just a few feet away from the grave of one Sister Mary Constant.
Okay, now I just gotta find a way to open this thing up and...
"Looking for this?"
She reeled around, drawing her Archangelblade in her spin. The tip was inches away from Naomi's heart. The angel hastily raised a hand to keep her from plunging the weapon into her chest.
"Easy, it's only me!"
"That doesn't reassure me. What the hell do you want, Naomi?"
Naomi slowly held out a human bone. A rib, from the looks of it.
"This is what you need, correct? The bone from a righteous mortal? You made an excellent choice in picking this particular human; there were not many like her."
Allegra narrowed her eyes at the angel.
"Am I really supposed to believe you are literally handing me a bone here? How do I know this is Sister Mary Constant's?"
"I give you my word that it is. I would not deceive you in this, Allegra. Getting rid of the Leviathans is in all our interests."
Allegra lowered her blade, scowling at Naomi. She did not trust that angel. Not for all the money in the world. There was no reason to think there wouldn't be a catch that came with the bone. And Allegra had a hunch she knew why.
"I'm guessing you got the memo then?" she asked.
"You mean Hester?" Naomi nodded. "Yes, you made a very clear statement in killing her. I must admit I was surprised Castiel did not suffer the same fate. As I recall, you two don't exactly see eye to eye. Or has that changed?"
"I don't see eye to eye with you either. You suggesting I rethink my decision of leaving you alive and kicking as well?"
Allegra's mouth curled up in a grin when Naomi recoiled from her. Having the angel draw back in fear from her felt good. She reached over and took the bone from Naomi's hand, throwing her a threatening glare.
"This had better be the real deal. Or else..."
"It is! I swear it. Allegra... You should know that the Leviathans took Kevin and the tablet and killed the angels who were watching him."
"What?!" exclaimed Allegra. "Why the hell didn't you save him?!"
"They were gone by the time we got there. The Leviathans have warded their headquarters from our sight, but even if we were to find it, there is no way we can get in.'
And there is was. Allegra scoffed and rolled her eyes at the angel.
"In other words, you want me to clean up your mess again."
Naomi opened her mouth to speak again, but Allegra quickly shut her up with an admonishing look.
"Whatever you wanna say, save it, Naomi. I'll get Kevin out when we go kill the Leviathans. Go back to Heaven and stay there."
"You presume to tell me what to do, little girl?"
"I don't presume anything; I am telling you. Archangel trumps angel, so get your ass back up there and make sure the others stay put as well, or you can go say hi to Hester in Purgatory."
The angel stood perplexed at Allegra's harsh command. Yet much to her surprise, Naomi then gave a short nod with her head and disappeared. Allegra exhaled, realizing only now that she had been holding her breath in anger this entire time.

"How the hell could you let this happen, Dean?! Why weren't you keeping an eye on him?!"
"It's a bit hard to keep an eye on a ghost, Allegra!"
"Don't give me that crap! Bobby was going poltergeist long before today! You had the flask; you were responsible for him!"
"Oh sure, blame me again! The flask was in the damn safe! How was I supposed to know he would find a way out?!"
"Well, maybe if you used what's between your ears more than what's between your legs, you might've figured it out since, oh yeah, vengeful spirits find ways to get vengeance!"
Sam watched Dean and Allegra arguing from his seat on the couch. He kept his expression smooth but was practically singing with joy on the inside. And from the looks of it, he wasn't the only one enjoying the drama. Crowley and Meg were absolutely relishing in the ongoing fight, despite their own 'strained relationship.' The only one who didn't seem comfortable was Castiel. The angel watched Dean and Allegra like a toddler who saw his parents fight with both hands firmly clasped over his ears.
Everyone had arrived in the cabin in the woods in a total time span of 10 minutes. First, Meg had shown up with Castiel on her tail, saying she was done babysitting (he had actually gone to find her on the other side of the world just because he felt good with her). Then, Crowley'd finally answered the summoning spell Dean and Sam had cast and was surprised to find both Meg and Castiel with the Winchesters but hadn't harmed either of them so far. And last but not least, Allegra had arrived with a nun's bone. So, all ingredients required for a Leviathan-killing weapon were accounted for.
But Allegra brought bad news as well; Kevin got kidnapped by the Leviathans. Time was even more of the essence now. When Allegra had then begun to lay out everything to make the weapon, she asked Dean to leave Bobby's flask behind since she didn't trust the ghost's reaction around Dick Roman. The current ongoing argument had begun right after Dean admitted he lost the flask and Bobby too.
"Right," said Crowley at no one in particular. "As much as I'm enjoying the intermezzo, I'm afraid I'm going to have to pull the plug on this one."
"Oh, come on, it's just starting to get good," complained Meg.
"Your boyfriend looks like he's ready to tear his ears off, and we very much need him in one piece for now." Crowley pointed at Castiel.
Sam wondered at the demon's words. Why would they still need the angel? They already had his blood. Did they need something else? Kevin hadn't mentioned anything about it in his notes. And Crowley was right; Castiel was looking worse. He was rocking back and forth, mumbling to himself. Meg put a hand on his shoulder, her brow furrowed at his behavior. Crowley sighed in annoyance, like a father about to get in between his fighting children, and stepped up to Dean and Allegra.
"Hate to break up your little one-on-one here, but if you wouldn't mind wrapping things up so that we can get down to..."
"SHUT IT!"
Allegra and Dean rounded on Crowley together, silencing him at once. The King of Hell narrowed his eyes at the both of them, but the ex-couple ignored him completely and kept shouting at each other, their voices growing louder and louder.
"Enough... Please..."
Sam turned his head when he heard Castiel's pleading voice. He rose from the couch when he saw the angel was close to breaking into tears and walked over to him.
"Cas? Cas, hey, it's okay," he said in a shushing voice. "Just relax."
"Maybe he should go outside for a while?" offered Meg.
"Yeah, good idea."
They each grabbed hold of Castiel's arms and began to pull him towards the door. But just as they were only a few steps away, the argument between Dean and Allegra reached a high note.
"IF IT WEREN'T FOR YOUR STUCK-UP EGO, HALF THE THINGS THAT HAPPENED IN THE LAST MONTHS WOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED!"
"YOU ARE THE ONE WHO LEFT, ALLEGRA! I CALLED YOU - GOD KNOWS HOW MANY TIMES - BUT YOU KEPT PUSHING ME AWAY!"
"I LEFT TO PROTECT YOU, AND YOU KNOW IT! DON'T YOU DARE USE THAT AS AN EXCUSE FOR SCREWING THAT AMAZON AND PLAYING DAD!"
The windows exploded. Glass shattered everywhere. Sam ducked away, his arms over his head to protect himself from the thousands of sharp pieces flying through the room. For a moment, he thought they were under attack. But everything stayed quiet.
He carefully straightened to his full length again and quickly scanned the room to take in the damage. It didn't seem like anyone was hurt. Everyone had ducked for cover in the nick of time. Meg was picking bits of glass from her hair, and Crowley was patting down his black suit. Dean had protected Allegra with his own body, pulling her down to the floor with him. Sam's jaw clenched when he saw how his brother pulled her up and asked if she was okay. She didn't push him away as Sam expected her to do.
"Oh, that is bloody marvelous!" exclaimed Crowley angrily. "Not only is the angel who can defeat the Leviathans off his rockers, but he's also a petulant five-year-old who acts out and runs when mommy and daddy are fighting!"
Sam looked to where Castiel had stood not a minute ago to find he was indeed gone.
"You better find a way to get him back. I don't care how, and I don't care who, but get Castiel back right bloody now!"
Crowley threw everyone one last snarling sneer before he disappeared. Meg sighed but was clearly relieved the King of Hell was gone. Both she and Sam then looked at Dean and Allegra, who were still holding on to each other, eyes locked as well. Allegra was the first to break the silence.
"I'll... I'll look for Castiel with Meg."
"Then... Sam and I will make the weapon and head down to Sucrocorp headquarters to keep an eye on Roman," said Dean. "Meet you there?"
Allegra nodded. She glanced down at her hand, still on Dean's arm. Sam noticed her reluctance to let go and cleared his throat. Dean and Allegra both jumped a little at this, a blush creeping up on their cheeks. Because of this, Sam was even more resolved than ever - his brother had to go.

"You sure he's here?" asked Meg when she looked around the abandoned park.
"Pretty sure, yeah," said Allegra. "It's an angel thing, I guess. But I'm just not sure why he would come here of all places."
She somehow managed to track Castiel down to Oregon, to the park where she and Dean had decided to give their relationship a try. Her heart wrenched when she saw the picnic table they sat at. It seemed like only yesterday...
"You found me."
Allegra turned around to find Castiel staring at her with an expression of awe and wonder.
"It's true then," he said. "It was to be expected after Hester, of course, and the other lesser angels already listened to you, but... it seems surreal that it has actually happened."
"What are you talking about?" asked Meg, confused.
"Allegra has taken command of Heaven."
"What?! No, I didn't," said Allegra in surprise.
"You did. How else would you have found me? An angel that stands just below an Archangel within the collective was compelled to follow your order which means the others must obey as well. They are all in Heaven, waiting for you. It is a shame I am no longer allowed to go up; else, I would happily join them. You know, I've been thinking, maybe I should send them a gift basket? To apologize for what I did, I mean. I still have some honey left and..."
"Okay, enough." Allegra silenced him before they got too much off track. "Castiel, you need to come back to the cabin with us."
The angel averted his eyes. Allegra exchanged looks with Meg. This wasn't gonna go easy.
"Castiel, look at me."
He kept his head turned, but the little twitch betrayed that he had almost looked up.
"Look at me," Allegra repeated with an authoritative voice.
Despite the obvious reluctance, Castiel faced her again. It seemed he was right about the whole obedience thing.
"I don't wanna order you to come with us, But I will if I have to."
"I won't fight," said Castiel. "I-I don't want to. B-But I can do other things! I can... I can make sandwiches. Dean really likes them. A-and I can make more honey. The bees are my friends now. Oh, and I can find a cat. We could use a cat, don't you agree?"
Allegra tried her best to stay calm, but it was getting really hard not to lunge at Castiel. He might be crazy now, but underneath she still saw him as the bastard who had let the Leviathans loose in the first place. To her, this whole act was just that - an act. Castiel was probably too afraid to take responsibility for his actions and make things right again. But hey, if he wanted to play hardball, fine.
"Castiel, I am ordering you to..."
"I don't like it when you fight with Dean."
Allegra's mouth stayed open mid-sentence.
"I don't like how Sam looks at you either. Lucifer has corrupted his mind; you can't trust him. You shouldn't be with him, but with Dean. I don't understand why you two are always fighting now. You never used to."
Castiel met Allegra's wide-eyed stare with curiosity and genuine incomprehension. She clenched her fists, feeling angrier than she ever felt before. The sky above them slowly turned dark grey. The sound of thunder broke through the silence. If it hadn't been for Meg, Heaven would have surely lost another angel.
"They broke up, Clarence," the demon said as she stepped between them. "Let's leave it at that."
"I don't understand." Castiel tilted his head to Meg. "Did Dean not give Allegra his heart?"
She glanced back over her shoulder.
"Guess not."
Allegra's nails dug into her palms, and she bit her lip until she tasted blood. Her eyes were shut firmly to keep the tears from rolling down her cheeks. Fury gave way to the only other emotion that gripped her heart tightly - sorrow. Enormous grief over the love she never truly knew or even held. She usually kept that emotion well hidden behind the mask she had learned to wear over the years, the mask she had come to rely on once more. But here, where she was reminded of a broken promise and a lost love, Allegra's wounded heart was exposed for all to see. The mask was crumbling yet again.
