Chapter Six

It was about six o'clock in the evening when we arrived at Scotland Yard. I was so tired but I was forced to come here.

We entered the building and made our way up to a floor of offices. Sherlock lead us into an office where a silver-haired man was pacing up and down the room. "Where the hell have you been?" He asked Sherlock.

"Busy." Sherlock answered then sat himself down on the opposite side of the table to the man.

"Hello. You must be Alice."

"At least someone remembers my name." I said.

"I'm Detective Inspector Lestrade and I am working on a case with your father and John that could potentially involve your mother." I sat next to Sherlock and John.

"What do you mean?"

"There have been numerous killings by a gang of thugs and assassins around London. These people either used to work for the gang or have threatened the gang in anyway. Last night, the police found tape of the man who hit your mother's car. He identified as part of the gang."

"What are you saying?"

"We think that there is a possibility of your mother being part of a gang or a group of some sort. Maybe in her past. We want to know if your mother said anything about a gang?"

"No. She was never part of a gang of any kind."

"Do you have any evidence."

"No but I know my mother better than anyone on this goddamned world and I know that she was not part of a gang. I bet this is Sherlock's idea." Sherlock had a blank look on his face with a hint of guilt. "I knew it." I got up and left the room crying. I had tried to be strong but now my father was accusing my mother of being in a gang. I was tired of him already. Lestrade and John tried to follow me but I was too fast. Before I knew it, I was outside the building dialling Mel's number.

Mel finally answered. "Hey Alice. Why did you cut off so suddenly earlier?" She asked.

"No time to explain. Are you free now?" I asked back.

"Where are you?" She could tell I was crying despite my efforts to hide it.

"Scotland Yard."

"I'll be ten minutes." The call cut off and I waited. John, Sherlock and Lestrade appeared out of the building and I hid behind a wall. They couldn't see me thankfully. Just at that moment, a taxi arrived carrying Mel in it. "Hop in!" She shouted. I ran over to the taxi trying not to be spotted but Lestrade saw me and tried to run to the taxi. The taxi had already left when he started running.

Mel took me to a small cafe around the corner from where she lived. "What was that back there?" She asked. I told her about everything that had happened since the phone call at Baker Street. "Your dad sounds pretty rude." I nodded as I sipped my tea. "I have something to tell you."

"What?" I asked.

"We're fundraising for a funeral for your mum. I know that your mum had no family so had no one to plan one but my mum and I thought it would be nice to raise money for a funeral."

"No you don't have to."

"Too late. We got £100 in donations today and we're gonna keep trying until we get £1000. Everyone is aware of the situation and so many people are interested in donating."

"I don't want you to go through the trouble of doing this."

"It's no problem. And don't worry, it's a private event so no random strangers will be there. That means only friends, family and us are going. You can invite anyone you feel needs to come."

"Thank you so much." I started to tear up again so Mel got up and hugged me.

We sat talking for another half an hour. It really made me feel better. "So, do you want to go back to your dad's?" Mel asked. I shook my head. "That's understandable. I can't believe he would accuse your mum of this."

"I get that he's an investigator of some sort and it's his job to make these kind of guesses. The problem was he was so smug about it." Suddenly, the sound of police sirens filled my ears. I looked out of the cafe window across the room to see a police car stop outside. Two familiar men stepped out. Lestrade and John. I cursed under my breath as they walked in. "Come on Alice. We've been looking for you for the past hour." John said.

"Excuse me, who are you?" Mel asked.

"I'm John Watson, her dad's roommate, and this is Detective Inspector Lestrade." Mel looked at me. "I don't want to go back. How did you found me?" I said.

"We used cameras to follow the taxi. I know that Sherlock is a pain but he'll come around. Come back and we can talk about this." John was kinder to me than Sherlock.

"Are you going to be alright?" I asked Mel.

"Yeah. I'll pay the bill and go." I pulled £5 out of my pocket and gave it to Mel.

"Use that." I walked off before Mel could protest and got into the police car.

The ride back seemed so slow but went quick, unfortunately. John sat at the back with me. "You really don't like Sherlock do you?" I shook my head. "Once you get to know each other better I'm sure you'll change your mind." I didn't believe that one bit.
