Surprise
Jason's POV
"C'mon, Jason. Just tell me already," Katerina whines.
"Have you ever seen a horse before?" I ask.
"What's a horse?"
"Guess that answers that question."
I lead her to the stables. Once she sees them, her eyes light up. "A- are those horses?"
I nod. She looks at me, as if asking if she can take a step forward. I open two of the stables and bring out a black horse and a light gray one. I begin to set up their reins and saddles. She watches intently. Her eyes don't break away from the horse. I wonder what it would be like to see so many common animals for the first time in your life.
"Okay, so basically, you hop on and keep your heels down while riding. Keep your back straight and hold the reins up and lead it with them," I quickly explain.
Kat nods, but is slightly timid of the large animal. She does exactly as instructed, uneasily sitting on top of the creature.
"Careful, they can smell fear," I remark with a smirk.
Her eyes widen with worry. "They can?"
I snicker, realizing that she has no clue what sarcasm is. I nudge the horse with my foot, gradually getting faster as we run deeper into the woods. Kat, terrified and confused at first, eventually catches up. She keeps glancing at me, making sure she's doing it right. She learns fast.
After a while, Kat becomes more confident. Her nervous grimace turns into a grin. She urges her horse faster, and faster. Too fast...
"Slow down! You don't know the land!" I shout, but my voice is carried away by the wind.
Not only that, there's predators around. I'd be ready to take them if they bothered us, but Kat is completely unaware. She doesn't know anything.
So of course I expect the worse. And odds are, the worst happened. I hear her horse spook and a startled yelp from Kat.
"It's okay! I'm sorry!" She yells, trying to calm the poor creature down.
"Idiot," I mumble. I slow my horse down and slide off, running to the scene up ahead.
