To Them (Contd.)

My eyes aren't downcast because I'm ashamed,

It's because I don't allow myself to make eye contact with strange men.

My body isn't covered because I'm insecure,

It's because it's so damn special, I need to wrap it up like treasure.

My ears aren't deaf to your snide remarks or the animalistic howls,

It's because my armour is painted with patience that holds back my growl.

My mouth isn't mute because I'm timid or weak,

It's because I was taught when to speak before I was taught how to speak.

I feel your penetrating gaze, so disgusting,

But I'll turn away because I'm raised to be a better person.

I hear your footsteps behind mine, slow and calculating,

I'd stand strong and remain firm, even though I'm trembling.

I hear laughs, I see fingers, do they all point at me?

You think I'm paranoid, but wouldn't you be too, in this society?

You leer, you leer, your filth in me you engrave,

I was just a harmless girl, trying to get home safe.
