background:
He has moved around often throughout his childhood; he rarely stayed in one place long enough to call it home, every few years they pack it up and go somewhere else. His father was never really home, always occupied with his work and maintaining his image; even when he was physically in the building, he was absent, too busy for Quinn and his mother. It was always just them—moving so often made it hard for Quinn to keep friendships and as a result he spent a lot of time with his mom. He has a strong relationship with her, he's a mama's boy for sure.
Quinn, who usually enjoys change, has never really liked how often they moved. Just when it felt like he was beginning to get used to their new place, it all was suddenly uprooted. After what felt like the thousandth time, his father promised, yet again, that there would be no more moving, but like clockwork, a year and a half passed and their stuff was packed into boxes and shipped off to a new address a few hours south of the place that Quinn expected to call home. After broken promises over the years, Quinn began to lose faith in his father's unfulfilled promises and began to lash out. While he would never want to disappoint his mother, he engages in behaviors that he /knows/ his good, holy, catholic father would disapprove of—even if he's never caught, it still feels like he's giving a big middle finger to the absent old man every time he bites into a weed brownie or rips back a few pills of adderall.
When he originally starts attending Lotus Academy, he is hesitant to gamble, as his uncle on his mother's side struggled with a gambling addiction. He didn't want her to worry about him becoming addicted too. But, eventually, he caves, as it's hard to make friends when it's the main social activity. He's admittedly the better at Blackjack, but because poker is more common and popular he tends to bet in those games more often.
