55: Twenty-Four Days After
Dean
It feels like it's been hours since we've first walked into this cafeteria.
Hunter just came back with the last barrack of men, before taking Severus and Elijah with him to raid the experiment. So many people are in this room. Hundreds are in this room, and the anger in their eyes tells me they're not going to stand there while a gun points at them much longer.
Hurry up, I beg under my breath. I'm getting more nervous and antsy as the moments go by. There are now nine of us with guns watching these men instead of just Mark, Carol, Ella, and I; but that doesn't make this easier.
Their eyes seem to get angrier as the seconds go by, and I feel the sweat rolling down my temple. This helmet and uniform are really hot, making me feel almost light headed. Reminds me of being in the desert, the scorching sun burning onto my skin. All the burn and boils are gone, the soap from the base seeming to heal my and my team's skin.
A few minutes later--it seeming like hours--Hunter finally comes back with the last of the Guards, their bodies clad in doctor robes. The look in their eyes and their outfits make me almost cringe at what they were going to start doing, and before I realize it I'm getting angry, the thought that they were going to perform yet another experiment on a Norovian.
"What's this about?" One of the Guards in a surgeon robe asks.
"Shut this down," Hunter begins, and I hear a small shake in his voice as he lifts his gun, his body tense. "Shut this experiment down right now, or I'll shoot," he threatens, their faces not seeming impressed or worried about the shaking kid with the gun.
"We can't do that, Jones," the same man in the robe shakes his head. "We're on the edge of breaking through this, finding a new dimension between the DNA of human and alien. We cannot close this down, not when we've gotten this far." The man's face is calm, making me even angrier.
"You're going to take more lives!" Hunter practically screams, and I can tell he's frustrated that he can't seem to make this right. It's as if he blames himself, and I begin to feel bad for him, despite how much I may dislike him. That's a large burden to bear, and he can't bare it all on himself, all the Guards have a part in this, not just Hunter. "Our world can't take anymore deaths!"
"That's a risk we're willing to take. We will risk as many lives as we need to accomplish this." From the corner of my eye, I watch as Hunter's finger hovers over the trigger, but before he can shoot, something else happens.
One of the Guards sprints towards the door, and it's almost as if it's being played in slow motion. None of us have time to react, before the light goes off above us.
There is a silence that drags around us, nothing but our breaths are heard, until a single gunshot goes off, making my blood run cold.
Please don't be Ella. That's the only thing I can of, and for the first time, I pray to the God the humans worship, begging Him to keep my girl okay.
