"Hey, Harry." Harry looked up from his text book, seeing Niall. He smiled, and Niall sat across from him. They were in the library, both having their books open. Harry was studying for his math quiz while Niall was doing his math homework that was assigned yesterday.
"Where's Louis?" Niall asked. Harry shrugged.
"Not sure. We had a small fight about something stupid, I wouldn't want to waste your homework time." Harry scratched the back of his neck, nervous about Louis' whereabouts. Louis didn't tell him where he was going, he kind of just stormed out of the library. Harry texted him, saying he was sorry, and that he'll make it up to him. He didn't text back, though. It just said he read it. At least Harry knows his best friend isn't ignoring him. Harry let out a breath of relief.
"Nah, it's okay. It's time for a two hour break anyways. So, what happened?"
"Two hour break? It's free period, we only ha- never mind. Anyway, for my period, I needed to study. But, Louis also have free period right now, and he wanted to go to In-N-Out. So, I was like, 'no, I have to study, so we could go after school.' But, then he got mad and practically got on his hands and knees, begging me. We were in the middle of the hallway, so people were staring and I hate that- Louis knows it too-, but he kept on doing it. Then, I just walked off. I left him there, and I felt so bad- I still feel bad-. And now, I have no clue where he is because he won't tell me!" Harry breathing was irregular, jagged. The librarian looked at the two, concern written all over her face.
Niall looked at the librarian, saying Harry's fine. But, it sounded like he was trying to convince himself more than her. "Harry, you're okay, and Louis' okay. We're all okay, don't worry." he hugged the curly-haired lad, rocking him back and forth lightly.
Harry didn't know what to feel. His emotions were going haywire, having no control. Harry regrets leaving his best friend, but he was failing math. D's are not his thing. Unless it's Louis'. But, all jokes aside, Harry didn't like the sad look he made Louis have. Not one bit. He feels like he's punched in the throat, since it hurt so much from crying at the moment.
What if Louis hates him? That's probably why he's ignoring him. Or, he probably went to go find a new best friend to replace Harry. It's funny how Harry thought that when just twenty-four hours ago he was telling Louis that he'll never replace him. Oh, how the tables have turned.
"Harry, you okay?" Harry looks up at the blonde kid with bloodshot eyes. He nodded, but just laid his head on Niall's shoulder. Niall, on the other hand, had millions of thoughts and questions swirling around his head. He's not dumb, so he could see the way Harry looked at his short best friend. Niall always sees them during lunch and around the halls. It's not that he's following them around, they just happen to be wherever he is. That happens to everyone right?
However, Niall tried not to think too much about it. He just let Harry be, he'll ask him later.
During the rest of the school day, Harry didn't see Louis once. And that made him sad. Sadder than he was before. Harry would've asked other students if they've seen his best friend, but his awkward social skills got in the way. He was almost tempted to ask Stephany, too. Niall, his new friend, was on the lookout for Louis also, but didn't find him either.
After school, Harry was about to get into his car when someone called his name. He turned around, sad and confused. He saw his little blonde friend jogging towards him. When Niall reached him, he was panting like crazy. He's terribly out of shape, not having been to the gym in almost five months.
"What's up, Niall?" Harry asked. He opened his car door to throw in his backpack, closing it back.
"Well, since you're sad about Louis, I was wondering if you'd like to go get ice cream with me. My mom says it helps with sadness." Niall offered a small smile to which Harry returned, nodding.
"But, could you drive? It's not that I don't want to, it's just I don't feel like it. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked. I'll just drive." But, Niall grabbed his arm, and took the keys from him.
"It's fine, mate." Harry let out a breath of relief, which the blonde kid laughed at. They got into the car, throwing their books and bags into the backseat. Then, they were off.
-
Inhale, exhale.
Inhale, exhale.
These words repeated in Louis' head as he blew out the cigarette smoke. He didn't plan on smoking, it just sort of happened. But, he felt stressed and he didn't know why. His body was aching for a smoke. It's weird since he hasn't done it in so long, however, it feels good. Feels just as good as the first time he had done it.
Louis used to smoke a lot. Only marijuana and cigarettes, nothing more than those. He started when he was fourteen, hanging out with older people, which he knew was bad. But, they were nice to him, so he didn't stop hanging out with them. They invited him to a party one day and he agreed, telling his mom that he was staying at a friends house.
The high school party was packed. People grinding on each other either on the dance floor or the corner. Some on the couch, too drunk to care if others saw them practically having sex on a couch. Fourteen year old Louis followed his friends into the basement, not knowing stoners and pot heads were down there, hotboxing. When one of the girls in their group of friends opens the door, smoke immediately hit Louis' face, making him cough and his eyes water.
He just followed his friends down the three little steps, seeing people either smoking or passed out in the tiny room. Louis didn't think so many people could fit into this small room. But, he couldn't tell if they really were passed out because their eyes were open, or half lidded.
"What's this?" Louis asked Tyler, one of his friends. Tyler looked down at little Louis, smiling wide.
"This, my dear friend, is a hotbox. The best part of any party." The group sat down in a vacant corner, a medium sized bag in the middle of their circle. Louis didn't know what it was, but he knew it was a type of drug. It was green with specks of purple in it. Macy, another girl in the group, opened up the bag. She put some of it in a small paper, rolling it up, then, Tyler lighting it with a lighter.
"Want a hit?" She asked Louis. The small boy hesitated, biting his lip. He knows he shouldn't but everyone is just staring at him, expecting him to. So, he gave into peer pressure. Louis reached out to grab the joint, placing it at his lips, then sucked in. He immediately started coughing uncontrollably, Tyler patting his back, and chuckling a little bit.
"You okay, man?" Louis didn't speak, just nodding.
For the rest of the night, his "friends" taught him how to smoke and showed him different types of drugs. He learned which ones 'mess you up', and ones not to take too much of. Louis was as high as a kite, yet he was listening intently. After the party was over, or when everyone is passed out, they left. The group had enough common sense not to drive, so they just walked Louis home. And yeah, they sort of pressured him into taking drugs, but they actually liked the small boy and didn't want anyone to mess with him if he walked alone.
Plus, he was high.
Before Louis walked up his driveway, Macy stopped him. She handed him a pack of cigarettes and lighter. "Just in case you're ever stressed, or you just want to do it." Before Louis could even thank her, she jogged away to catch up with the rest of her friends. Louis looked at the packer, turning it in his hand. He pocketed the items, then made his way to his backyard.
He smoked for a whole year, but stopped once he met Harry at the beginning of high school. It was hard for him to just stop abruptly, but he handled it. He'd chew gum if he was having withdrawals. When Louis and Harry first became friends, Harry always questioned why Louis smelled like cigarettes. So, Louis just told him that his dad smoked.
Which was true, but not a lot to the point where it would stick to your clothes.
Louis dropped the cigarette butt to the ground, stomping it out. He stuck a piece of gum into his mouth, then started walking to Harry's house. He wasn't that far, which was good, so Louis walked for a good five minutes.
Louis went up the driveway, thankful to see Harry's car was parked. But, it wasn't in his usual spot. Harry parks on the left side of the driveway, this time it's on the right. Louis squinted his eyes at that, however he just quickly brushed it off. Once at the front door, he twisted the knob, pushing it open. Yeah, they were those type of best friends.
Louis noticed Anne wasn't home, and neither was Gemma, but she's hardly home so he wasn't surprised. He walked up the steps, getting closer to his best friends room. Before he opened the door, he heard laughing. Harry's laugh and someone else's. Louis furrowed his eyebrows, then opens the door angrily. It slams against the wall, making the two people in the room immediately shut up.
Harry looked at Louis, smiling widely, and jumping up to hug him. "Louis! Where were you? Why didn't you answer my texts? I'm so sorry, I-I should've just hung out with you instead of worrying about stupid tests. I'm sorry."
Louis didn't say anything, just hugging the blubbering boy back tightly. Niall was awkwardly sitting there, not wanting to say anything in fear he might say something wrong. He could leave, but the two boys were blocking the door. So, he just went on his phone, texting his other friends.
Harry pulled away, tears and snot dripping down his face. Louis looked at him, then chuckled. "Your face is a mess, Haz." Harry laughed too.
"I got some on your shirt, sorry, Lou." Louis shrugged. He looked at the blonde boy that was still in the room as he scrolled on his phone. Louis' facial expression changed. "Lou, be nice. Please?"
Louis' eyes flickered from Niall to Harry, then back at Niall. "Why is he even here?" he whispered.
"I hung out with him today. He took me to go get ice cream because I was upset with you. He didn't do anything bad, I promise. Niall is a really nice and funny person, I think you'll like him." Harry grabbed Lou's hand- which did not, under any circumstance, make Louis blush- and tugged him over to his bed.
When the pair sat down, Niall looked up from his phone, then put it away. "Niall, this is my best friend Louis. Lou, this is my new friend Niall."
"Harry, we know each other." the blonde spoke. Louis nodded his head.
"I know that, but you guys don't know each other." Harry replied, putting emphasis on 'know'. "Now, you guys get to know each other while I go get drinks." Before either could reply, the curly haired boy was already out the door.
Niall and Louis sat in an uncomfortable silence for a few seconds, not knowing how to strike up a conversation. In Louis' mind, he was trying to find a question that won't scare the blonde off. He was happy that Harry made a new friend, but deep down he was still afraid of being replaced. Louis has always been a bit self conscious, but he doesn't let it show. That's why he was either sassy, or a bitch. Sometimes, both.
Okay, most of the time he's both.
"So, do you like Harry?" Louis asked Niall. The blonde looked up, nodding slowly.
"Yeah, he's a cool guy. Real funny, too. His knock- knock jokes are lame, but funny."
"His jokes are lame, but they're cute. He's cute." Louis said the last part quietly, mostly to himself. But, Niall heard him. A sweet smile spread across the blue-eyed boys face. He totally ships this shit.
Before Louis came barging into the door, Harry was telling Niall about his crush on Louis. He even said how he might love the short boy. And, they were laughing because Harry told Niall about Louis' height.
"He claims he's five foot nine, but I don't believe him. He's definitely shorter; my small fry." Niall laughed as did Harry, guessing how short Louis is.
"I'm not supposed to tell you this, but Harry likes you." Niall confessed.
Louis scoffed. "Duh, I know."
"No, no. He likes you as in, he has crush on you. And, I think you like him, too Lou"
"Don't call me that. Only Harry can. And Harry does not have a crush on me, neither do I." Just as that was said, Harry came back into the room with a tray that held three glasses of juice and cookies. He set the tray down on his computer desk, then gave a glass to each of his friends.
"Sorry it took me a while. I couldn't find the tray. So, are you guys friends now?" The two boys spared a glance at each other, then mumbling 'yes' and 'yeah'. Harry clapped his hands out of excitement, and Louis smiled fondly at him. Niall may or may not have seen the smile, either.
For the rest of the day, they just hung out. They talked, ate, drank- juice of course- and played video games. Anne had a late shift at work, so she texted Harry that she didn't want anyone in her house past ten-thirty. Including Louis. So, when ten-thirty rolled around he escorted his friends to the door, saying bye to them and that he'll see them later.
As Harry laid down in his bed that night, his phone went off. He picked it up from the bedside table, unlocking it to see he had a text. It was from Louis.
'good night, love. love you.xx'
Harry smiled small, putting his phone on the charger, then falling asleep with that same smile.
