{Summer of 2009}
Collins and Devan Key sat on the steps of the front porch as their mother instructed them to do. Mrs. Key had arranged that her friend from work would have supper with them that evening and she was going to bring her daughter, Maggie Caine. To be good guests, she told her boys to wait for the mother and daughter outside. The brothers weren't sure what to expect. Was this girl going to be fun? They knew the girls at school just wanted to play with dolls or dress up like supermodels. Would they have anything in common with her? Would she be nice?
"Bro, is that her?" Devan asked pointing at a car that drove past their house. Collins shook his head, "No, mom said that the car was white." The younger one nodded slumping his chin into his hands. He was growing a little impatient. Collins just waited with little attention span. What was she going to be like?
Soon wheels rolled up the driveway catching their senses. She was here. The boys stood up and let their gaze stick to the vehicle. The car came to a full stop, parked, and the doors opened. Collins and Devan saw a short, brunette girl step out from the backseat. The girl had short curly hair, hazel brown eyes, and wore a Star Wars T-Shirt with yoga pants. When she spotted the boys, her eyes began to twinkle with excitement as she ran over to see them while mom went inside.
The brothers smiled as she came over. The girl stopped in front of them looking energetic, "Hi, I'm Maggie! What are your names?" Collins looked over at Devan who just stared back at him. The older one spoke for them, "I'm Collins and this is my brother Devan." The younger one just gave a shy wave in the girls direction. Devan can be a little nervous sometimes when getting to know new people. Maggie didn't think anything of it and gave them both hugs, "It's so nice to meet you guys! What should we play first?"
Right then the Key Bros knew they were going to like her. Collins suggested, "How about tag?" Maggie grinned, with a smirk, "Okay," she tapped Devan quickly on the arm, "Tag! You're it!" She giggled running away from him, and his older brother soon did as well. The shorter boy began to smile and chase after them.
They laughed and play together that whole day, and continued to for the next several years. The two boys soon found this girl to be their best friend. The group started going to the movies together, the park, and even just hanging out at the Key house. But one day, a couple years later(2013 to be exact), Maggie and her mom told the family that they were moving to Oregon and would only visit a few times a year. Devastated, Collins and Devan made the best of what time they still had together until she had to go.
But the brothers made sure to stay in contact with Maggie through texting and calling. When she did come to California, they pushed and cancelled all their plans to hang out with her and catch up. Even though the key bros did this, it never felt the same. They needed their best friend.
{Present Time: Autumn 2016}
Devan and Collins sat on their front porch with building anticipation and excitement. Devan asked as a black car drove by the house, "Is that her?" Collins furrowed his eyebrows, "No, she said she'll be driving a grey jeep." The other sighed leaning back on the cement, "When will she get here?" The older one rested his head in his hand, "I don't know."
Maggie had said she was coming to visit and she had something she needed to tell them. The brother's were super excited because they hadn't seen her for over a month when she came in August. They had texted everyday with her but that was all they were able to do.
Devan rubbed his face with a moan hearing the sound of wheels across the way, "Is that her?" Collins squinted to get a better view then smiled happily, "Yes!" The younger brother's eyes widened and he sat up from laying on the ground. The two bounced from their position now stood up, viewing the car pull into the driveway. The engine stopped and the door swung open.
Soon a young woman stepped out from the drivers side and the two boys watched her climb out. Her long brown wavy hair blew behind her as she stretched her head up. The door shut revealing a flowy pink shirt with ripped jeans the girl wore. It was Maggie. Collins smiled at the sight if her. He was so glad to see her again. Then he turned to his brother, whom continued to stare off at her. He wasn't the only one glad to see her...
Maggie grinned seeing the brothers and ran over to them, "Collins! Devan!" First she leaped towards Collins who hug her with a swing, wrapping his arms around her as she did around his neck. She pulled away and asked, "I know I just saw you about two months ago, but did you get taller?" The blonde boy shrugged playfully, "Well I'm a growing boy." Maggie giggled a little as she heard someone grunt beside him. It was Devan with a slight smirk, "Now, I'm offended. I didn't know this was the ignore Devan reunion." She rolled her eyes at him, "Hey Dev."
They both stared at each for a long moment giving Collins an itching feeling.. The magician asked, "Maggie, aren't you going to give him a hug too?" She glanced over at him with a smirk, "Nah, he doesn't deserve it." Devan smiled a little with his heart beating faster, "Oh yeah? What's does it take for a guy to get a hug around here?" Maggie looked him in the eyes, her milk chocolate ones melting into his icy blue, "Gimme all the candy you got in your secret stash." He rolled his eyes playfully, "You can't be serious."
She asked with her hands on her hips, "Do you want a hug?" There was a pause as Collins felt a spark form between them. The young boy answered, "Fine, but only because you forced me to." Maggie came in close, "No it's because you care about me." Devan laughed, feeling a hidden blush on his face, "Don't make this harder than it already is." They laughed and gave each other a tight hug making the older of the two immediately ship them again.
He already knew Devan liked Maggie, because his brother told him! Collins assumed it started in the beginning of June when she came to visit. The three had spent the whole time at a family get together playing man hunt and Maggie and Devan were put on the same team. It took thirty minutes to find the two and it turned out they were hiding together behind a tree...that whole time. Collins later asked if they did anything behind that tree and Devan answered no, but did reveal he had feelings for her with deep blush forming on his face talking about it.
And no, Collins never had a crush on Maggie. Sure he might have thought she was pretty at one point, but the boy was three years older than her and besides that he feels like she's his little sister sometimes.
Finally, Collins spoke up after being quiet their whole conversation, "Ahem, you guys wanna go inside and do something?" Maggie looked up at him, "Sure! Let me get on your back!" Before he could respond, the young girl jumped on him and he held her by the legs. Devan walked to the door, "We got a movie from on demand too." The girl with the wavy hair smiled, "Okay, it better not be some horror film or anything." Collins tilted his head toward her, "Don't worry it isn't."
{Time Skip}
Soon they were watching the movie, MOANA. Maggie was laughing at first making the rest of them laugh as well. But she sat on the couch to watch the movie with Collins getting popcorn and Devan sitting beside her. Once Collins came with the buttery contents, he gave the bowl to Maggie who was in the middle and Collins turned on the movie. The girl turned her head at Devan, "You better not hog all the popcorn." He laughed taking a bite of some, "Says the girl who is holding the bowl."
Maggie giggled and soon they remained their focus on the movie, where their guest commented on every fragment. Collins laughed, "Stop being the narrator!" Maggie smirked, "What I've seen this like 4 times. I can narrate if-," she paused, "Ooh! It's a song! Devan sing!" He raised an eyebrow at her, "No, why?!" She nudged him, then Collins, "Both of you go!" The older one nudged her, "You should be the one singing you're the singer!"
"Oh , come on! Stop being such sissies!" Maggie exclaimed, elbowing Devan once more. The younger one just laughed, "Hey, I'm not a sissy!" They all laughed together and Collins could feel like Devan had grabbed the attention of their friend because she continued to keep her attention on him. This didn't bother the older one because it just made him ponder at a plan that was building in his head...
Maggie looked at the screen now and asked, "So should we continue the movie or can I go get some more candy in Devan's secret stash?" The young boy smirked a little, "You know where it is.." The young woman giggled and stood up to walk over to the staircase, leaving the boys to watch her go. But Devan stared longer after her than Collins did which made the older one smirk. He threw a popcorn kernel at the younger one to get his attention which it did.
Devan turned his head around to see his brother with a smug grin on his face. Slightly embarrassed, he gives a nervous laugh and scratches the back of his neck, "What...?" Without a word, Collins tossed a side glance at the stairs then back at the other indicating Maggie, wiggling his eyebrows. The teen just denied it, "I know what you're thinking and it's not gonna happen."
"Oh, come on Dev! This can be your chance to get your feelings out there," Collins persisted casually. Devan shook his head with a sigh, "I don't think so. She only sees me as a friend, possibly a brother." The older one crossed his arms, "You don't know that."
"..I don't know," was all Devan could say.
"Don't know what?" It was Maggie. Devan and Collins looked in her direction then at each other. The elder brother gave him a look just go for it! The other also said with his pleading icy blue eyes don't say anything! So with a sigh, Collins replied to the question still watching Devan, "We don't know what fun activity we should do next." Their friend nodded, "Ohh, how about we go to the park!"
Devan began to finally smile, "Okay, let's go." Then with one quick glance at Maggie and Devan, Collins got up, "Let me grab my keys."
