Chapter 17 - Jealousy
Friday, July 7, 1972.
Today was the last day of school, and Helena and Roger had gone on vacation to college. Helena got the reasonable marks on chemistry to move on to the next semester. Classes will now return only in the second week of September.
Some things had changed. The young student Alan has become friends with Pamela and the two are getting to know each other better. Pamela is no longer with Roger and the blonde did not think it was bad and Roger became friends with Alan, as the boy wanted. Alan joined Roger's gang but, Roger's group was not just thinking about futilities now, they want to run for Imperial College's Student Guild in September and create proposals for improvement for college students and Helena's group as well . Helena had also been invited to come in September, with her back to classes she started writing in the Imperial College newspaper. The young woman also excelled in photography and biology faculty, also during the first year of academic study, wrote many articles on Biology and other subjects and pleased teachers and coordination.
This summer Friday, Helena arrived at three o'clock in the afternoon at the orphanage, to do recreational activities with the children. Roger, being on probation, must arrive at two in the afternoon at the orphanage and stay there until six o'clock in the afternoon. Helena stays until this time. At the orphanage, both Helena and Roger play with the children and get their affection, but Helena remains jealous of Roger.
"Grace, Aunt Helena can tell you a story, do you want to hear which one?" - Said Helena showing some fairytales for the six year old girl, who has black hair and green eyes like Helena.
"Auntie Helena, I do not want to hear stories, I want to hear Uncle Roger sing to me," Grace said, moving toward the drummer.
Roger smiled at her and set her down beside him. The other children, who painted with Helena, went to meet Roger. Even Peter who loved Helen said:
"Aunt Helena, promise me you will not be mad at me if I go to Uncle Roger?" I like to see him singing and playing guitar for us.
Helena looked at Peter, the little boy with blue eyes and blond hair, just like Roger. In fact, the boy seemed to be Roger's son, while the girl Grace seemed to be his daughter.
"Are you changing me for Roger, to you, Peter?" Helena said visibly upset.
"Aunt Helena, please do not be sad to me. You're still the most beautiful girl in the world, and when I grow up, I want to date you. "The seven-year-old boy stared at the brunette through his big blue eyes.
Helena watched Roger singing and playing guitar for the children and felt great jealousy, since, since the blonde appeared for the social work in the orphanage, it conquered the children.Helena sighed.
"Go with him, Peter," Helena said sadly. "Aunt Helena is going home.
"No, Auntie Helena, please do not go," said Peter.
- Go with him and forget me, okay? She said a little louder to the boy and regretted it.
The little boy looked at Helena, startled.
"Aunt Helena yelled at me," he said with tearful eyes and ran toward Roger.
Helena saw the situation and was pissed off toward the toys guarding them.
Roger played the guitar and sang to the children, but he had noticed how sad the brunette was, moodless, and Peter approached him.
"Aunt Helena yelled at me," the little boy said, sounding really like Roger's son.
"Aunt Helena is not bad, to have yelled at you, Peter," Grace said, sounding like Helena's daughter.
"But she screamed at me," said the little boy crying. "She's sad to me.
"Why is she sad to you?" Roger asked.
"Because I wanted to stay here and Aunt Helena was sad," Peter said.
Roger watched the brunette, storing the toys in the big boxes, looking annoyed. And the blonde felt terrible because, it's as if he had stolen the attention of all the children for him and Helena had lost space.
"Kids, I'll be right back, I'll talk to Aunt Helena," Roger said, getting up. "Mike, please hold my guitar, if you want, you can play some song for the little ones, I'll be right back."
Mike is the eldest of the orphanage and he is eleven years old. He's been learning to play guitar with Roger since the blonde started his social work at the scene.
Helena had already stored the toys in the big boxes, just like the notebooks with drawings. She was about to get her purse and the key to her car when Roger touched her arm.
"Where do you think you're going?" The blonde asked.
"I'm going home, I've finished my work here for today. I'm going to say goodbye to coordinator Julia, "Helena said completely unmotivated.
"Where is that Helen of strong personality, who has always confronted me, who is not afraid of danger, who likes justice? I see demotivation in you, today, here, being that you always enjoyed being with children. Peter is sad because, according to the little boy, you yelled at him, "said Roger.
"Peter prefers you," Helena said, glaring at him sadly. "All children prefer you to Grace." You have conquered all the children. Go to them, do your job, I've already lost all their affection. I do not think I'll do that social work here any longer. They have you now. From Monday, I do not come anymore. It was good while it lasted. Now you have to do the tasks with them.
The brunette had tears in her eyes , dying of jealousy, and Roger noticed.
"You're not going anywhere," said the blonde, holding her in the eye and Helena was surprised by his attitude. "The children adore you, especially Peter who tells everyone that he will be your future boyfriend. Please do not be jealous.
"I'm not jealous," she said defensively, looking at him.
"Of course you are," Roger said. "And please do not think I'm stealing the children's attention. I'm not competing with you. Helena you do a lovely volunteer job at this orphanage. I am here, serving a sentence for a year, doing social work, but, I confess that these children have changed my attitude, everything that has happened in recent times, in relation to Alan, in relation to many things, has shown me, other priorities of my life, which were lost, "said the blond looking at him.
Helena looked at him in surprise and studied him, not knowing what to say. Roger took the brunette's purse and put the key of her car in the bag and left it on the table. Then he pulled her arm gently.
"Come, follow me," he told her, and Helena went with him and approached the children.
"Aunt Helena did not leave," Peter said.
"No, my love, come here with Aunt Helena, I want a hug from you," the brunette said tenderly, and Peter came toward her and hugged her tightly.
"I really like Uncle Roger, but you're still my favorite," Peter said.
Helena smiled and hugged him harder.
"I'm sorry I spoke up with you, but I was sad," Helena said.
"Do not be sad, Aunt Helena," said the boy, running his hand over her face.
Roger took his guitar back with Mike and Grace was sitting next to him clapping his hands.
"Sing to us, Uncle Roger," Grace said.
Roger looked at Helena and smiled.
"I'm going to play the guitar, but who will sing for us, it's Aunt Helena, what do you think?" - The blond smiled.
The children shouted in agreement.
"But I do not know how to sing," Helena said, looking scared at Roger.
"She knows how to sing, Uncle Roger, I have often heard Aunt Helena sing alone in the corridors of the orphanage and she has a beautiful voice," Mike smiled.
Roger smiled back at Helena.
"You'll sing and I'll play the guitar," Roger said, smiling. "The children are waiting."
"But what song I'll sing for them, I do not remember any of them at the moment," Helena said desperately.
- Good Day Sunshine, from The Beatles, what do you think? - Roger said smiling. - I just love this song.
"I love it too," Helena said, looking at him.
"That'll be that," smiled the blonde.
Helena began to sing a little ashamed and Roger played the guitar, but little by little the brunette let go and sang at will and Roger smiled and the children were adoring.
Roger looked at Helena and said to her softly,
- You sing very well.
Helena smiled at him and the blonde smiled back.
After this song, Helena sang others and Roger played her guitar and in the end everyone had a pleasant afternoon and for the first time since meeting Helena and Roger they had a pleasant moment, without fights.
