Chapter 4-Runaway

We all stood inside the Ringmaster's tent, confused and scared. Mitch and Ian were nervously whispering, Quentin and Jerome were pacing through the tent, and I was curled into a little ball, sitting on the floor. Ty seemed to be the only calm one here. He leaned against a wall, hiding himself within the shadows. A completely normal thing for him to do. The ringmaster had commanded that we stay in his tent while he tracked down Seto, and everyone had quietly obliged.

"What will happen to Seto if he did run and was caught?" I asked Mitch. Mitch looked away from Ian, and shrugged, saying," Nothing good, I'm sure." I shuddered at how eerily vague "good" sounded. Mitch went back to whispering with Ian, and I sighed.

Situating myself back against the wall, I adjusted my glasses and began drawing in the dirt. I had always found it comforting to me whenever I was nervous or agitated. As I drew, I had noticed Ty leaning out of the shadows and glancing down at my drawings. I would look at him, and he would quickly look away. Sighing, I didn't bother to try to start a conversation.

As we waited, I began to feel restless. I could tell I wasn't the only one either. Mitch's flames were becoming brighter, and Quentin's gills were flaring ever-so-slightly. I managed to keep my restlessness down with the soothing strokes of my fingers through the sand. Everyone besides Ty and I had eventually clustered into a tight circle, murmuring about who knows what.

I was in the middle of drawing a picture when I saw something move out of the corner of my eye. I turned my head, and saw Ty sitting next to me. His tail was resting lightly on top of his crossed legs. Hid snake-like eyes were drawn onto my sand pictures. I didn't move, but just watched him as he studied my drawings.

After a few moments, he looked at me, and said in a hushed voice," Those are really good. Your pretty talented." I stared at him. He looked at me for a moment, and then went back to looking at the pictures.

"Oh, uh, thanks." I mumbled, turning my head back to the sand. I continued drawing, and I could tell Ty was watching me.

Clearing my throat, I managed to whisper out," Do you want to draw with me?" Ty jumped a little, as if he wasn't expecting me to talk. He turned his head, his bangs falling infront of his left eye, and he shook his head. Looking back at the drawings, he said in a sad tone," I don't draw. I can't draw." I scoffed.

"That's about the most ridiculous thing I have heard. Of course you can draw. Everyone can." Ty shook his head.

"I guess everyone except me then. I'll just watch instead." He trailed off, almost seeming like he wanted to add something, but then decided not to. I stared at him for a few moments, and then nodded.

"Can you tell me what all those things are that you drew?" Ty asked, minutes after our last conversation. I nodded.

I pointed to my first drawing, and I began listing off everything I drawn, from stars to animals to people. He was very attentive, and his usual "hey, don't talk to me" attitude seemed to disappear. When I finished listing off the drawings, he just stared down at the sand. I wasn't sure how to react, due to this being such different behavior to the normal Ty. Normal Ty was tough and shelled off and ready to fight, but this Ty was gentler, almost as if the shell that he would create would melt away, leaving just soft skin.

"Are you sure you don't want to draw? It helps pass the time." I asked again quietly. He looked at me, frowning a bit. Then, he surprised me. He lightly touched the surface of the sand, and dragged his finger slowly through the sand. He connected lines and swirls, and before I knew it, a picture of a dragon was etched into the sand. It had large wings and sharp fangs, like Ty had. I felt a pang of sympathy towards him, though I didn't know why.

"You're a great artist Ty." I told him as I studied his drawing closely. I wasn't lying. He really could draw. Ty shrugged.

Just then, two large shadows appeared in the entryway of the tent. A large man was holding a frail, beaten looking boy by the back of his shirt. The boy looked like he had been beaten pretty badly, and then dragged back here. By now we were all looking at the two shadows. The tent was eerily silent. The boy was thrown into the tent, and I instantly knew it was Seto.

"Oh my gosh, Seto! What happened to you?!" I exclaimed, crawling over to him. Seto was laying on his side, with a black eye and plenty of scratches on his face and arms. A small flicker of magic danced between his cracked fingers.

"This is what happens when you try to run from Cirque De Hybrid. This is meant as a sanctuary, so people will never run you out of another town. You are cared for here, whereas in the real world, you are nothing but freaks." The ringmaster snarled. He looked at each of us, and then walked off. As soon as he was out of earshot, Seto began laughing. It was hoarse and sounded forced.

"Seto, you idiot. You blazing Idiot." Ty said, standing up and storming out of the tent. I watched him walk off, but I diverted my attention back to Seto. I looked at the group of others and said in a clammy voice," Find the first aid kit."

The others all ran off in search of a first aid kit, while I stayed with Seto.

"Seto, why on earth would you run?" I asked him quietly. Seto moved his head slightly, and smiled.

"Because I wanted to see the sunset. Duh." He laughed, but then began coughing. I sighed.

"Seto, I have to agree with Ty on this one. You're an idiot." Seto cracked a smile.

"Only the best my friend. Only the best idiot."
