☃One☃
It seems like just yesterday I was having the best Christmas of my life.
It seems like just yesterday when Phil asked me to marry him.
It seems like just yesterday we were planning our wedding.
Oh wait, that was yesterday.
Phil had of course began counting down the days until Christmas. He started on December 26th of last year and has somehow managed to keep up with it, even though it's currently July 2016 now.
That's as far as I know at least. I flew out to New York to take care of some things. Phil insisted on staying behind. He made the excuse of being scared of heights. I didn't protest with him at the time because it was early in the morning and I just wanted to go to sleep on the plane like I had planned.
*****
"I'm surprised to see that you're calling me." It was ten at night in New York for me and since I was five hours behind Phil, it was three in the morning in London for him. "Shouldn't you be sleeping?"
"I can't sleep!" Phil sounded like he had drank three cups of coffee before calling me. "I want you to come home right now!"
"Phil, I can't just magically teleport to London!" I couldn't help but smile at how much my fiancé was excited for me to get home. "You know this!"
"Aw, come on! I'll summon a UFO to come and get you!"
I laughed. "That's very nice of you darling, but I'll be home tomorrow. You can give me all the hugs and kisses in the world then."
"That's a very long time from now Daniel Howell! You know this!"
"Yes Philip Lester, I know this. But patience is a virtue my darling."
"I'm totally going to use that against sometime!"
"Good luck finding an opportunity." I rolled my eyes and laughed a bit. "I'm gonna hang up so you can at least try and get some sleep."
Phil whined.
"You need rest so that we can spend the entire day tomorrow planning the wedding. We need to hurry up and tie the knot. I'm getting impatient and so is your family."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever." Phil seemed to calm down from his hyper episode. "Let's not worry about finally setting a date until you get back." I heard him yawn. "I need sleep. I hear birds chirping."
"Phil, it's three in the fucking morning in London. Do not sit there and try to tell me that there are birds chirping."
"There's a bird chirping on my computer. I'm playing Can Your Pet? My pet's name is Tweety Jr."
"Tweety will forever be missed." I put the hand that wasn't holding my phone on my heart and looked up at the ceiling.
I then heard the familiar sound of the saws in the game. "Daddy's so sorry Tweety Jr."
"How could you Phil?! I didn't even get a chance to meet him!"
"I'm sorry sweetie. I'll make Tweety The Third and you'll get to meet him when you get home."
"Thank you darling. That's so very kind of you. Turn off your computer after you hatch Tweety The Third."
A few moments later, I heard him doing what I had instructed him to do. "Okay baby, my computer's off now."
"Put it in a safe place and lay down."
I heard movement as he got up and put the computer whenever he had chosen as his safe place. I then heard the sounds of his bed as he laid down on it. "Okay, the computer's nice and safe. What should I do now?"
"You should go to sleep."
"Dan, you know I can't just close my eyes and go to sleep. I need something to help me sleep."
I smiled and immediately sat up as I remembered the hotel that I was staying at had a grand piano. People didn't have to be back in their room until eleven and it was still a little past ten so I would be good if I went down and started playing something. I supported my phone with my shoulder as I stood up and opened my door. I stepped out into the hallway and made sure that I had my room key with me before closing the door behind me. There were a few people roaming around the hotel here and there and they gave me strange looks as I fast walked (What? Did you really think that I was going to run?) down into the lobby.
*****
The lobby was practically empty at this hour. There were three people working at the front desk but they were the only ones who were out there. I briefly looked at the fireplace that was surrounded by three couches and a coffee table in the center before I turned a corner and entered the ballroom. Yes, you heard me right. My hotel had a ballroom and so what if it did? And so what I had spent my entire week in New York getting Ubers rather than taxis? Sometimes I deserve to give myself some nice treatment.
"Dan? Are you still there? All I can hear is a bunch of movement."
I placed my phone down on the black and sleek grand piano before I replied to him, "Yes Phil, I'm still here. I thought that I would do something really special for you in order to help you sleep."
"Oo, what are you going to do for me darling?" I could hear him practically jumping up and down.
"You'll see." I told him as I placed my fingers down on the keys.
"No I won't. We're talking on the phone you goofball!"
"Whatever. You know what I mean." I laughed. "Now, I want you to close your eyes and just listen. Can you do that for me?"
"Yes." He paused and I assumed he got comfortable and closed his eyes. "Okay, my eyes are closed."
I smiled as I started playing Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. I smiled as I began singing it.
"This is my favorite Christmas song!" Phil cried out in happiness.
*****
I heard applause when I finished the song.
I looked around and saw that quite a few people had gathered around to listen to me sing and play. Almost every single one of those people left money near my seat before leaving to, I assume at least, return to their rooms. I bent down and gathered up all of the money that I had just received. After smoothing and counting it out, I found that I had made ten American dollars.
I guess I'll be turning these into pounds when I get home.
I suddenly remembered that I was still talking to Phil on the phone and picked my phone up before putting it up to my ear. I was about to speak when I heard snoring.
Well, looks like it worked.
"Sweet dreams Phil. I love you." I whispered to him before hanging up. I put my phone back into my pocket and making my way back up to my room.
