There's a brief moment each morning that I forget all my worries.
I forget about which assignment is due that day, I forget about college applications and that my high school days are beginning to end. I forget all the drama that's inevitably occurring, and most of all I forget that more than likely, I've woken up in this giant house just to be all alone. Again.
I watched the orange sky, swirling with hints of pale pink as the sun slowly inches upwards to it's designated peak. My parents specifically designed this house so that each end of the house was floor to ceiling windows, giving a perfect view of both the sunset and sunrise. My room was facing the east, so every morning I was woken up by the orange glow that crept into my room. One of my favourite moments of the day.
I stretched my body over my white linen bedding, slightly groaning when I felt the stiffness in my back. It was no doubt a result from the five hour shopping spree Bella dragged Isla and me on yesterday. I smiled to myself as I remembered the look on her face when she finally found the pair of perfect thigh high boots she was looking for. Even when she's driving me insane with her shopping addiction, I can never find myself to be anything close to annoyed with her.
She held a part of my heart after all, and Isla held another part.
Just as I was about to leave the sanctuary of my bed, the loud vibration of my phone under my pillow allowed me to sink back into the glorious fabric. After a quick glance at the screen, not that I needed to confirm who it was, I answered the incoming group video call.
"How'd I know you'd still be in bed?" Isla rolled her eyes before continuing to apply a white cream to her face. Sunscreen, I'd bet any money. Isla wasn't one for makeup unless it was an after hours event, since she snuck off to the beach every chance she got.
"Because she's in bed everytime we call her in the morning," Bella replied with a smirk, her phone was propped up on her kitchen island while she ate her breakfast, pancakes, it looked like. Her makeup was already perfectly applied, her hair styled into gentle curls.
"Get up, Indie, we don't want to be late again." Isla continued, making me want to roll my eyes at her.
"You guys have your own cars don't you? Drive yourself." I muttered at them before slowly sitting up and wiping the sleep out of my eye.
"You shouldn't have been born six months before us then, and you wouldn't have been the first to get your license. We can't break tradition now." Bella hummed as she continued to eat her food.
Since I was the first one to turn 16 and get my driver's license, I always picked my two best friends up and we drove to school together. Although I'm only slightly bitter about it now, we had certain traditions we wouldn't trade for the world, and that was one of them. Unless one of us was sick, rain or shine, we spent our mornings together.
As I got myself ready, I listened to Isla and Bella argue about what our plans for the weekend would be. Bella wanted to drive into the city and watch some band at a club, Isla wanted to spend the whole weekend at the beach, as always.
Applying quickly applying some makeup, I left my phone on my bathroom counter as I dashed into my walk in closet. I barely scanned the racks of clothes before I selected some clothes, pulling them onto my body without a second thought. I strode back into my bathroom and grabbed my phone which was still emitting the voices of my best friends.
"I'll be there in five Isla, seven for you, Bells." I told them before pressing the red X and ending the call.
Exactly five minutes later, and I was pulled into the driveway of a beautiful mansion. I honked my horn as I waved to the man who was pruning the rose bushes in the front yard.
"How is it possible that you take the least amount of time to get ready, yet somehow look the best everyday?" I heard Isla say as she slid into the front seat of my car, causing me to shake my head at her.
"Right, I forgot not to talk to you until after we've hit Grady's," she continued as I swiftly smacked her arm. Not that I could deny it, I was a bitch until after I had my morning coffee.
Once we picked up Bella, we headed towards our favourite coffee place, Grady's. It was a small family owned cafe, and their coffee was the only coffee I'll drink. Isla jumped out of the car to collect our cold brews and once she climbed back in the car with my precious coffee, I paused to take a long drink of the liquid gold, feeling my typical morning grumpiness vanish.
"So, Bells," I said as I turned my head around to look at Bella with a grin on my face.
"I know that face, Indie. What do you want?" Bella asked as eyed me suspiciously.
"Jake has been harassing Evan again, asking him to ask me to get you on board with Jake taking you out," I told her, eyeing her to gage her reaction. Evan was my boyfriend of almost a year. He played on the football team with Jake, who has had a thing for Bella for months. I watched as she lowered her head, trying to hide the small smile that formed on her lips, but she didn't say anything.
"You clearly like him, so what's the problem?" Isla asked, she must have seen Bella's reaction, too.
"You know how the football guys are, they like the chase. Once you say yes to them, you live in blissful fun for a month before they move onto the next one," Bella said as she played with a strand of her hair.
"That's how they are with everyone else, not us. Look at Indie. She's been with Evan for like, ever," Isla said as she pulled down the mirror and applied chapstick to her lips.
"It's been a long time since Anthony, Bells," I spoke softly, as I always did when mentioning Bella's ex-boyfriend. He broke her heart when he left for college across the country. He promised they would stay together but broke up with her only three days after he left.
"Yeah, maybe. I'll think about it," Bella muttered. Taking the hint, I turned back in my seat and started the car, cranking up the radio and heading towards the school.
We pulled into the school parking lot, and I noticed that it was full of students, meaning we weren't as late as we usually were. We grabbed our bags and our coffees before stepping out and making our way to the front doors. As usual, people followed us with their eyes. We pushed through the entrance doors and my eyes landed on my boyfriend Evan, who was waiting for me. He was leaning against the wall, donning his leather varsity jacket. His blonde hair was perfectly gelled and his blue eyes found mine as a smirk landed on his lips. I skipped towards him and landed my arms around his neck, pulling him in for a quick kiss, lacing my hand through his and continuing towards my locker.
"You look sexy, as always, Indie," Evan said as his eyes raked up and down my body.
"How she does it? I don't know. She woke up 15 minutes before she had to leave, again," I heard Isla say from behind me.
"Well, that's what happens when you have a body like hers," Evan said as his hands wrapped around my waist. He pushed me gently, so my back landed against my locker. He quickly brought his lips to my neck, peppering the exposed skin with kisses.
"Evan!" I squealed out before pushing him off of me, noticing all the eyes of the students scattering the hallways that were trained on us.
"Can you blame me, Indie?" He replied with a smirk. I rolled my eyes, opening my locker and turning my back to him so I could grab my books. Isla and Bella also opened their lockers beside me, it only took us 5 minutes of pleading with the secretary on the first day of our senior year before they graciously gave us adjoining lockers. Our lockers last year were located on different floors and we ended up putting all of our books in Bella's locker so we could see each other during breaks.
Three girls to one locker was a mess, but it was better than the alternative.
"You coming over tonight, babe?" Evan whispered into my ear, pressing his chest against my back. God, he was touchy this morning.
"I don't know what we have planned for tonight," I told him, glancing at my best friends.
"You know, you don't have to spend every waking moment with each other," Evan muttered.
"Of course we don't," Isla said before closing her locker and flicking her blonde hair over her shoulder, "we just want to."
I giggled, pulling out my books and closing my own locker. Evan sighed and mumbled something under his breath that I couldn't catch.
"Fine, you can all come, then. Jake will be there, Bella, and a couple other guys from the team." Evan said as he snaked his hand around my waist again.
"We'll confer and get back to you." Bella hummed, grabbing my hand and pulling me down the hallway away from Evan, who was left shaking his head. He should be used to our antics after all. Isla skipped up to join us, so we were walking three in a row.
Of course we didn't spend every waking moment together, but we spent as much time with each other as we could. We made a promise our final year in middle school, that no matter what happened, it would be the three of us. Through thick and thin, through boys, through arguments, through anything. It was a promise we kept, and our priority was always each other.
After all, you don't find your husband in high school, you find your bridesmaids.
