Drenched (David and Lea)

A.N. This is from Chapter 9 of "I Can't Forget".

"I'm really, really sorry."

"For the nth time, Lea, I told you that it is okay." David changes the rate of speed of his car's wipers and make them go faster as the heavy droplets of rain started to distort more of his view on the road. "And my seats are made of synthetic leather so they are currently serving their main purpose now." David adds with a chuckle, hoping to cheer Lea up.

But the girl did not look like she was smiling. In fact, all the more she was sulking.

David sneaks a glance at her and silently sighs. "Listen, Lea...you should not worry about the car-"

"I'm...I'm not worried over the car anymore." She interrupts him quietly.

"Then why the long face?" David asks as he turns the car right.

"I'm just thinking about my dad." She answers, looking out the window. The rain has no plans of toning down its mighty fall of drops and it does not bother Lea at all. Just like the falling drops of heavy rain, she would want to be hit by the heavy problems of her life.

"Listen, Lea-" David starts but is interrupted by Lea.

"Turn left here." She instructs and David complies sighing audibly.

"Lea-" He tries again.

"David, you don't have to add to my worries." She snaps, causing him to shut his mouth. Lea realizes what she has just did and now started to feel guilty. David did not do anything wrong, she thought. In fact, he was just trying to help or be a good friend.

She sneaks a glance at him and notices that he is starting to frown. She couldn't help to frown too. Lea sighs in defeat. "David," she starts, "just forget what I said before. I'm really sorry...I'm just really stressed out."

"Aren't we all?" David jokes, trying to lighten up the mood.

"I guess we all are." Lea adds. David flashes a smile at her and she musters to smile back. "I heard what happened, David." She continues. "You okay?"

He shrugs, "We both treated it as a fling, you know? But it still hurts though." Lea observes his constant smile but the sad look in his eyes tells a different side to the story.

The girl decides to not say more and faces front again. "That's my house," she points at the third house to their right, "it's the one with the white gate." Lea sits up straight as David slows down the speed of the car as they near the house.

"But wait," Lea furrows her eyebrows in confusion as she sees something up front. "why is our car there?" She points at a car meters away from her house.

"Do still want me to drop you off at your house?" David asks.

"No, I want to see why the car is outside." She replies. David stops the car right beside Lea's blue family car. She unbuckles her seatbelt and immediately runs out to the driver's side of the car. Her hair starts to get soaked again the pouring rain. "Oh my God!" She exclaims and fondles on the door handle of the car. David gets out of his car to know why Lea was panicking. In the blue car was an unconscious man with eyes closed and minimal blood running down his mouth. The car's engine is still running and the man's hands are still holding tightly on the steering wheel. One foot of his is pressing on the brake pedal of the car.

"He's my dad!" Lea exclaims and slams her hand on the driver's window. "The car is locked and we need to get him out of there!" She says, tears running down her face. "Dad!" She calls out to him and slams her hands on the window again, but the man did not move at all. David looks around to see if anyone is passing by or seeing what is happening at all, but to their luck, this is not a highly populated area and the houses here had their lights turned off already. It's late at night and everyone is resting.

"Lea," David grabs the girl by her shoulders. "I need you to stop panicking, okay?" Even with the rain, David could still see the tears running down from her eyes. "When your dad wakes up, he wouldn't want to see his daughter worried over him, would he?"

"O-Okay." She manages to utter. David gently smiles at her and leans a little bit closer to the girl.

"We're going to get your dad out of there," he whispers, "and then we're going to take him to the hospital, I promise." Lea just nods as a reply and David run to open the back portion of his car. He goes through his toolbox and grabs a wrench.

"As much I could figure out a way to dismantle the door handle's mechanism of your car, that would take too much time." He tells her, "I would have to break the window on the passenger's side."

"Just do it already, David." Lea pleads. David hits the window with the wrench and it leaves a small crack on it. This is going to take some time. David thought as he hits the window again.

He hits it some more until a part of it breaks leaving just enough space for his arm to fit through the broken glass. He inserts his right arm through the space and tries to unlock the door.

"Ah," he gasps in pain as he feels the glass piercing through his clothes to his skin. He manages to unlock the door though and goes inside the car. He reaches over to the driver's side and turns off the engine. David then notices opened packets of medical tablets on the front seat.

"Olanzapine..." He reads out loud and gasps, realizing what type of medication it is intended for. I would have to ask Lea later. He thought, reaching out to the driver's side to unlock the door.

Lea, at the other side, helps David open the door. Once she has all the space to move, she immediately unbuckles the seatbelt securing her father. David gets out of the car and helps Lea bring out and carry her father to David's car. They fix his position as he is laid down on the backseat of David's car. Lea stays with her father at the back as David drives fast to the hospital.

Olanzapine is a medical drug for those suffering from schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Overdose of it could cause adverse effects.

David started to get worried. He had a feeling that Lea's dad wanted to end it all tonight.

----------------

"It's good that he was rushed to the hospital, Miss Sivan." The doctor says.

David and Lea have been at the waiting room for the past hour and a half. Lea's dad was rushed immediately to the emergency room and is now transferred to one of the hospital's private rooms in the psychiatric ward.

"Right now we are excreting the extra doses of the medicine from Mister Sivan." The doctor continues browsing through the patient's records, "He apparently suffered from a seizure, an adverse effect of intaking too much of his medicine, Olanzapine."

"Did you also check for any possible adverse effects?" David buts in, "Perhaps a dialysis should be done. Overdose of Olanzapine could lead to kidney failure."

"Young man, we have already done all tests and we are just waiting for the results." The doctors informs him. "But you seem to know your medicines, may I ask for your name?"

"David..." The young man mumbles.

"And your last name?"

"Chapman," David finishes.

"Ah, no wonder why. Your father is a pathologist, Doctor Arnold Chapman whilst your mother is a child psychiatrist, Doctor Paula Chapman."

"Your parents are doctors?" Lea questions David.

"We are not here to talk about my parents," David speaks up. "In fact we should be dealing with more important factors as of the moment."

"Is this why you told me that they could transfer my dad to a private room with a low cost?" Lea continues in disbelief.

"Lea," David tries to reason out with her, "as long as he will stay well-"

"I don't want my dad to stay here anymore." Lea interrupts, talking to the doctor. "He can continue his medication at home."

"Miss Sivan-"

"I can take care of him at home." Lea continues with much conviction.

"As much as I want him to stay with you, I don't think I can allow my patient to do that."

"And why is that?"

"Well," the doctor starts, "it's better if your father stays here at the ward. We have nurses who will take care of him 24/7."

"Are you saying that I'm not credible enough to take care of my own father?" Lea utters in complete frustration.

"With the fact that he overdosed himself and was about to drive a car, then yes." The doctors answers. "With your mother working overseas and you busy with school, we may have all the time to take care of him here."

"Then I'll stop going to school!" The girl announces.

David gently holds Lea's hand, "Lea, you can't just do that. You have to think of how it could help your dad-" Lea pushes him away from her.

"You don't know anything about almost losing a family member." Lea seethes and walks to the exit of the hospital.

David sighs and apologizes to the doctor before going after Lea. He grabs a free umbrella to use from a rack by the exit door. David presses the button for the umbrella to open and it shields him from the falling raindrops. "Where are you, Lea?" He whispers to himself, brisk walking around the area. He passes by people walking by him, sitting under the protection of the trees. David then sees a girl sitting on a sidewalk under the pouring rain. He knew who she was already.

He walks toward the girl and cover her with the umbrella he has. "Hey," he utters softly.

"I told you that I don't need your help," the girl mumbles, "let me learn to handle things on my own."

Without saying anything further with that matter, David asks her, "Mind if I sit beside you?"

"If you're willing to get your butt wet then I don't mind." Lea simply answers. David sits by her right, fixing the umbrella to make sure that it is still protecting the both of them from the rain.

"I was meant to enter the field of medicine too," David starts sharing to Lea, "just like my parents, I prepared myself to become a doctor."

"Then why the sudden change of interest?" Lea asks quietly, not even bothering to look at David.

David shrugs, "Because I thought my parents would finally pay attention to me."

This causes Lea to look at him, "What do you mean?"

"I..." David let out a nervous laugh as he hesitates with his words, "I actually have an older brother. Specifically older by four years. He has Asperger's syndrome..." He trails off, fiddling with his fingers.

"David..."

"I'm not telling you because I want you to feel pity for me. I'm telling you because I know about your dad's condition, it's fair if you also knew about my brother's." David flashes her a light smile but it was not like the regular smiles he would give her.

"You're right though," He continues, "I don't know anything about almost losing a family member. But I do know the feeling of being the one who is lost."

"I'm on the brink of feeling lost too, David."

"My parents are always at the hospital with my brother, conducting several researches just to find a way to understand him and discover medicine that could hopefully tone down the syndrome or completely take it away. It's not that I don't like my brother, I love my brother. I'd do anything it takes to understand him even if it hurts most of the time. It's just I, alone, at our house. Sometimes, well most of the time I feel like my parents forget that I exist at all."

David then holds her knee and gently squeezes it, "That's why Lea, while you're drenched with all your problems and worries. Let me stay as a friend to help keep you dry. I don't want you to end up like me."

Lea musters a smile at him and does the same by placing a hand on his knee and gently squeezing it too, "And I'll try to do the same for you," she whispers.
