Chapter 29 | shopping trip
Today you, L, the boys and Watari were going out to get the boys some more stuff. That meant a trip to the shops. To make things easier, you decided to split into groups.
Watari took Mello, L took Near and you took Matt. You split up to go into seperate shops and get everything you needed. You held the boys hand as he excitedly looked around at all the stuff in the shop.
"So, what what extra class do you want to do?" You asked.
"I'm too little to do computer stuff yet, so until I can I wanna learn to play guitar! So I'll do music" he said.
"Cool! L's really good at music, he knows piano AND violin. Maybe he can help you with the sheet music"
"Piano AND violin? Aren't they suuuupperr hard?"
"They can be"
"Wow he's really smart!"
You pulled him into the clothing section and looked down at the sizes you'd written on your hand.
"Ok, what kind of clothes do you want?" You asked.
"Stripes! And jeans... and those fuzzy socks for when it snows outside" he replied.
"Ok, better get looking"
The two of you roamed the clothing isles, picking out the stuff he wanted and needed and put them into the shopping basket. You didn't forget about the kite either, you found one and put it in the shopping basket as well. Of course he wanted to get some more toys, so you ended up in the toy isle, looking at all the balls, games and hula hoops and such.
"(Y/n)?" He asked.
"Yeah?"
"Are you and L boyfriend and girlfriend?"
You giggled, knowing the boys would figure it out eventually.
"Yep. I've known him since we were five and we've always loved each other" you explained.
"I knew it! I told Mello I was right!"
You laughed again, these boys man... already making bets over random things. He put a soccer ball in the basket and you moved onto the next isle.
"Don't go too crazy, we still need money for the arcade" you said.
"Ok, one more toy"
He looked up and down the isle, trying to decide on what to put in the basket. He ended up picking some colouring set, a book and pencils. As you began I make your way to the checkout, you went through the sporting isles to get there. But something caught Matt's eye.
"Woah! Look at those goggles!" He gasped, stopping in front of some biking goggles with orange lenses.
"Biking goggles?"
"I wanna ride motorbikes when I'm older, so I'll definitely need goggles one day"
You thought for a moment. Why not make this child's day.
"Want them?" You asked.
"I can get them?!"
"Sure"
He grabbed them and put them in the basket, hugging your waist.
"Thank you!" He smiled.
"It's nothing, I'll adjust the straps for you after we pay"
You went through the check out and sat at a bench for a moment so you could work in the goggles. You bit the tag off with your teeth and pulled at the straps until they were the right length for a five year old.
"Come here" you said, holding out the goggles.
Matt walked over and climbed into your lap, you pulled the goggles over his head and sat them on his forehead.
"There, you can wear them on your eyes when we're outside, they'll be like sunglasses" you explained.
He smiled, wrapping his arms around your neck.
"Thank you (y/n)"
"You're welcome, they're pretty cool goggles anyway. Ready to go to the arcade?"
"Yeah! Let's go!"
Your grabbed the bags and made your way into the arcade. You gave him some tokens and off he went to try and top the leaderboard in every game possible.
You watched him absolutely kill it on the games he picked. He wasn't wrong, he was super good at space invaders.
"Well look who is it"
You turned to find L, bags on his arms and holding Near up against his chest.
"Hello to you too" you replied.
"I thought you'd be here. Watari is getting Mello some shoes, he'll be here soon"
"Ok, I'm pretty sure Mello will be wanting to try and beat Matt when they get here"
L looked over at Matt who was already on the seventh level after three minutes.
"Holy hell he's racing through that... wait... goggles?"
"He wanted them. Apparently he's going to ride motorbikes when he grows up so he needs the gear" you explains.
"Alright then, actually they kind of go with the stripes somehow"
"I know, the kids got a look that's for sure"
"Ah, Damn these bags are slipping-" L said.
"I'll take Near" you replied.
L passed Near into your arms, he didn't seem to mind, he was too busy playing with the new teddy he had.
"You got those teddies you wanted?" You asked.
He nodded, brining the grey bear up to his chest.
"What are you going to name him?"
He thought for a moment, searching his young brain for a good name.
"Lucky" he replied.
"That's a good name, lucky sounds nice"
Just as the words left your mouth you saw Mello run past you and up to Matt, wanting to play against him. You turned to find Watari behind you.
"I'll take the bags to the car and bring itbaround the front so the kids can play for a bit. I'll see you outside" he said.
You handed him all the bags and turned your attention back to the kids. Matt and Mello were playing air hockey and getting really into it, leaning over the table to get better hits. They were best friends already. Near didn't seem very interested in the games, more in his teddy. You and L sat at the chairs by the snack bar, keeping and eye on Matt and Mello. Near seemed fine sitting in your lap and playing with Lucky.
"So, hows being a babysitter treating you?" You asked.
"Well, these kids are obviously different, they were sent to wammys after all. If it was any other kids I'd probably be dying" L replied.
You laughed at his response.
"I get that. They're definitely mature for their age"
"Although Mellos super hyper, he tires me out"
"What? L? Tired? As in his body craving sleep? Un-heard of!"
"Haha very funny. You know what I mean, like playing with him requires you to be actually exercising, something my messed up joints don't like" L said.
"Yeah I know, he is full of energy. How do you think they'll go on class?" You replied.
"Matt and Mello seem eager to learn, I'm sure they'll be fine. Although... I think Near will need a little encouragement to get used to it. He's very quiet... and still a little wobbly on his feet"
"I believe that's our job. Well mine at least, you have like six cases to finish before you can be in a classroom again"
Near was listening to your conversation and decided to jump in.
"I can walk, but my legs hurt to walk for too long" he said.
That made sense. If he was completely neglected by his parents he probably had to learn to walk on his own and if his mussels hadn't strengthened properly that'd make him a little sore.
"Oh that makes sense. But the more you walk the less sore you'll be" you said.
Maybe taking him to the park more often would be good for him, help him get a little stronger.
"I guess, if I'm stronger I won't hurt as much?" He asked.
"Yeah, that's it"
Damn, smart three year old... he connected those pretty fast.
"And... I don't like talking because people will yell at me"
You and L gave each other a worried look. He had one of those families huh? Uninvolved parents and verbally abusive? Ouch.
"No one will yell at you here, in fact, you'll get in trouble for being too loud"
That seemed to peak his interest.
"Really?"
"Really. The only time someone yells is if they're calling you from the other room. If you yell for anything else you'll get in trouble"
That was true. Fights were quickly broken up and punished, adults didn't yell at kids as for some it was a little triggering and if you're being too loud, you get in trouble. This seemed to be the green light for Near, if people got in trouble for yelling, they wouldn't yell because getting in trouble sucks. He smiled, quite happy to know that little detail.
"So I won't get yelled at?" He asked.
"Nope" you replied.
He smiled brighter, happy to be out of that silent prison his parents put him in. You turned to L.
"So what do you say? Gonna help out?" You asked.
L sighed, not being able to say no to you.
"Fine... only for you though. And only if I have no cases to work on" he said.
You smiled, grabbing his hand and kissing his knuckles.
"Thanks"
"You're so lucky I love you"
