Tears of a Jolly Beetle

Arabella's POV

I was currently in the Man Cave watching my father and Henry on tv, and they were accepting medals from the Vice Mayor of Swellview. I wasn't allowed to go, because I'm Ray's daughter, and I'm not allowed to reveal my identity to anyone. My dad's received awards before so I wasn't paying attention to it that much and shut it off after it finished.

It was sad yet funny when they cut Henry short in his speech. I enjoyed that part.

——

My dad, Henry, and Charlotte returned and we had a problem. My dad got hurt and he wasn't okay, that's a huge problem. Something must've happened and we need to fix it, because this will literally ruin the reputation of Captain Man. He's vulnerable to villains now.

"Come on, Gooch. How many more of these tests are we gonna do?" My dad asks Gooch with annoyance. Gooch has run many tests on my dad and I'm actually terrified right now; these could kill him.

"Shush." Gooch said. "Now remove your right glove, then hold your right hand."

My dad removed his glove as Gooch stood behind a giant flame thrower. "This is getting on my nerves now."

Henry and I were both enjoying the frozen yogurt they bought. It was meant for him and my dad, but I'm the daughter so I get some too.

My eyes grew as Gooch fired up the flame thrower. "Hold in the fire!"

Gooch blasted fire at my dad's hand and he cried out in pain. "Ow! Ow Ow!" He screamed and Henry and I watched as we ate the yogurt.

This is some good yogurt.

Gooch lowered the flame thrower and my dad's hand was burnt and he was in terrible pain.

"Do you still feel the pain in your hand?" Gooch asks.

"Yeah!" My dad groans in pain. "I don't get it! It's been two seconds, the pain should be gone by now."

"We need more tests." Gooch declares.

"No, we've checked enough of my body parts." My dad protests.

"What about his butt?" Henry asks and I nod. "Check his butt."

"That's an important part." I add.

"We should check your butt." Gooch confirms.

"Check my butt how?" My dad questions.

Gooch picked up a bow and arrow. "Face the other way and touch your toes."

"Oh, no, no, no!" My dad denies. "You've already stabbed my neck, poured acid on my foot, and toasted my hand. I think we can all assume I'm also vulnerable to butt wounds."

"Hey, you guys." Henry called and we turned to him. "This is great frozen yogurt."

"It is." I grin.

"Quarter of that yogurt's mine!" My dad snarls and I shrug.

"Gooch, what's going on with me?" My dad asks. "No one's been able to injure me since I was eight years old."

"Hey, everyone!" Charlotte calls. "Come look at this."

We approach Charlotte at the monitors.

"What's up?" I ask her.

"Watch this new footage from the award thing yesterday. I'll play it in slow motion." Charlotte says and plays a part of the footage slowly. As Captain Man was taking a picture with a elderly woman, this lady came by and sprayed him with something without him noticing.

"See right there? You see that woman with the perfumes?" Charlotte asks.

"She intentionally sprayed me." My dad gasps with disbelief.

"But perfume wouldn't make you lose your powers." Henry reasons.

"True. Perfume wouldn't." I state. "Only the tears of a Jolly Beetle."

"Jolly what?" Charlotte asks.

I motioned Charlotte to move and I searched up all types of beetles. I'm not a fan of beetles so I just scrolled through them until I landed on the Jolly Beetle.

"There! The Jolly Beetle." Gooch points.

"One of the rarest and happiest bugs on Earth." My dad explained.

"So, you guys are saying that a Jolly Beetle can take away Captain Man's power?" Charlotte questions.

"Not the beetle itself." My dad begins.

"The beetle's tears." Gooch continues.

"You see, when they cry, their tears contain an enzyme, like an acid that breaks down molecular density." My dad explains.

"And molecular density is what makes Captain Man undamageable." Gooch finishes.

"I don't think that's a word." I chime and my dad pokes my cheek.

"Don't change the subject."

"That lady's perfume..." Henry trails off.

"Contained the tears of a Jolly Beetle." Gooch says.

"Ah, that's impossible." My dad groans. "To fill a whole perfume bottle, you'd need tears from dozens of Jolly Beetles."

"And they would all have to be crying." I add.

"But if those beetles are so Jolly, what would make them cry?" Henry questions and all of us look up with a confused expression.

——

Later, Charlotte left and Gooch went back upstairs. An emergency was happening and my dad was nowhere to be found, so Henry and I were searching for him. A tiger got loose and my dad and Henry are supposed to catch it.

"Dad!" I call as we walked through the man cave.

"Captain Man!" Henry calls and we went up to the monitors. Henry pulls out the intercom speaker. "Captain Man to the Man Cave. Captain Man to the Man Cave."

Gooch appeared on the screen. "Hey!"

"What, Gooch?" I asked.

"Why haven't you left yet? The tiger roams free." Gooch asks Henry.

"I'm waiting for Ray." Henry answers.

"I'm coming!" My dad calls and appears at the top of the stairs.

I take a step back when I see him wearing a helmet and safety equipment. Henry and I shared a look, before rolling our eyes at my dad as he trudged down here, almost tripping.

"What are your wearing?" I ask him.

"Just, you know, some extra protection." My dad remarks, carefully walking up to us.

"You don't need extra protection you're Captain Man." Henry points out.

"But I can be injured now." My dad reasons.

"Well, you're still a great fighter." Henry argues.

"Tigers can be vicious." My dad complains.

"Maybe this one's nice." Henry shrugs. "I mean, come on. Let's not stereotype all tigers."

I nod in agreement at that.

"Do you know last night I went across the street, a bee stung me?" My dad tells us and I roll my eyes as he scratches his hand. "And now I got a red bump."

"Did you provoke the bee?" I ask my dad.

"Yeah, Bella, I was flirting with the bee's girlfriend." My dad sarcastically remarks and I shake my head with an annoyed look. "I was all 'zzz zzz' and she was all 'zzz zzz."

"I don't need the attitude, dad." I scold him.

"Ray, it's our job protect Swellview." Henry says.

My dad groans as he removes his helmet. "Oh, face it, kids, I've lost it. I can't protect Swellview! I couldn't protect a duck from a Chinese restaurant."

"Ray..." Henry sighs.

"You go on without me." My dad tells Henry. "Go on now, get!

"Dad..." I sigh and Henry walks toward the tubes as my dad walks the opposite way behind the monitors.

"Good luck, Henry!" I call and he grins at me.

"Thanks, Bella!"

——

It's been two days since my dad lost his power and Henry has been doing all the work by himself. My dad has done nothing but sit on his lazy butt and eat meat. It's irritating that my dad is so afraid of getting hurt now, because Henry is vulnerable to everything but here he is working his butt off like the sidekick he is.

I was upstairs with Charlotte because she found a way to get my dad his power back. We went down to the man cave, which was a horrible ride, because that elevator sucks and needs to be fixed.

Charlotte and I ran over to Henry and my dad. Henry looked dirty and gross, probably from pulling people out of a swamp.

"You guys, I found something!" Charlotte chirps.

"What did you find?" Henry asks her.

"Okay, Ray lost his powers because he got sprayed with tears from a Jolly Beetle." Charlotte began.

"Yeah, yeah. I think we're all aware of what's happened up to this point." My dad complains and I roll my eyes.

"Just tell us what you found-" Henry pauses when his phone rings and pulls it out.

"What now?" My dad groans.

"What?" Henry answers in annoyance and I couldn't understand who is was. "I don't know. But I can't talk-"

"I am not okay!"

Okay, that I heard.

"Is this Piper?" I ask Charlotte and she nods.

"You've never ever been okay." Henry mentions.

"Who's that?" My dad asks.

Henry pulls the phone away. "Just my dumb sister." He puts us phone back to his ear. "Piper, I-"

I heard mumbling on the phone and Henry sighed. "Oh, no." He seemed very disinterested as his sister spoke. "Wow, tell me more." He put the phone down and looked at us. "Okay, tell us what you two found out."

"That Jolly Beetles only eat one thing." I begin.

"What?"

"Japanese Fish Flakes." I inform.

"Fish flakes?" Henry says with confusion.

"Yeah!" Charlotte expresses and she went up to my dad, who was curious. "And two weeks ago, 100 pounds of them were shipped to a warehouse right here in Swellview."

"A load of fish flakes. That would feed dozens of Jolly Beetles." My dad mentions.

"And who would need to have that many Jolly Beetles?" I question with a grin.

"Someone who needed a lot of Jolly Beetle tears!" Henry remarks.

"Enough to spray Captain Man." Charlotte adds.

"One sec." Henry sighs and picks up his phone. "She did? No way. Then what happened." He set the phone down. "Where's the warehouse?"

"Downtown, Abbey Road." Charlotte informs.

"Ray. Let's go." Henry tells Ray who moves away.

"No! I can't fight bad guys in my position!" My dad denies.

"Is he serious?" Charlotte asks.

"He's afraid now, because he can be injured." I scold and my dad looks at us.

"Well, who wouldn't be afraid?" My dad reasons.

"How about me?" Henry exclaims. "I'm your sidekick and I've been helping you do all kinds of dangerous stuff, and I've never had any powers! I can be hurt!"

"Which is why I pay you nine dollars an hour!" My dad remarks and I groan at him, shaking my head.

"I'll be back." Henry says.

"Where you going?" Charlotte asks.

"To do my job." Henry glares at my dad before picking up his phone again. "Yeah, yeah, Marla's bad and you're amazing!"

"Thank you!"

Henry hung up and stood under the tube. My dad seemed anxious and wanted to go.

"Well? Go with him." I tell my dad.

"I can't." My dad sadly says and Henry sighs.

"You mean you won't." Charlotte corrects.

"Have you seen my bee sting?" My dad asks, showing her the tiny bump on his hand.

"Just forget it! I don't need Captain Couch." Henry scolds and presses his belt, making a tube encase him. "Up the tube!"

Henry got shot up and Charlotte and I look at my dad.

"Look, the bee hurt me." The dad pouts and we glare at him.

"Why don't you be a true superhero and help your sidekick out, instead of being a big baby?" I snap at my dad before marching upstairs and into my room.

——

"So, how does this work?"

Well, my dad faced his fears and fought of the villains who had the Jolly Beetles. His name was Dr. Minyak and my dad and Henry successfully defeated him, and got all the Jolly Beetles back to the Man Cave.

Well, except one, because it got mysteriously kill by gas. More like my dad's foot to be exact.

So now, we were watching Drake and Josh to make the beetles laugh.

"You see, when the beetles watch something funny, they secrete euphoric acid, which we can use to reverse the weakening effect of the tears." Gooch explains to Charlotte.

"You started that!" Josh yells at his brother Drake on the tv screen.

"You calling me a liar?" Drake asks.

"I ain't calling you a truther!" Josh fires back and we laugh, including the beetles.

Henry, my dad, and I sigh. "Classic."

"And now I extract the fluid." Gooch tells us and we turn to see him extracting some of the fluid.

"And this happy bug juice is really gonna fix Captain Man?" Henry asks.

"We hope." Gooch says.

"It better." I say with nervousness.

"Come on, let's do this." My dad says and Gooch points the syringe at him.

"Ready?" Gooch asks him. "Spray in the hole.

Gooch sprays him and Henry and I lean back as my dad gasps. His body spazzes out and I felt Henry grip my arms tightly, moving me back. My dad's eyes glow a bright blue color and this freaks me out.

"Oh! That's interesting." My dad says as his body jiggles like jello and moments later after his spazz attack his body stopped shaking. He was breathing heavily and we stared at him, as Henry released my arms.

"Did it work?" Henry and I question.

"Only one way to find out." Gooch says.

——

We moved the beetles out of the way and got out this giant laser gun. I was extremely nervous, I mean, this could kill my dad. I don't want my dad to die, that's the last thing I want.

"Setting to intensity five." Gooch says and powers up the laser gun. Right then, an alarm blared meaning an emergency.

"Emergency." I say and Ray rushes up to the monitor to check it out.

On screen, we see Jasper wandering the streets. "Somebody help me, please! I can't get these jeans off!"

Henry and I share a look of annoyance. Really?

"You hear that?" My dad asks. "There's a boy wandering through Swelleview Park trapped in his own pants!"

"Swellview needs you!" Henry declares.

"Okay, Gooch." My dad stands in front of the laser. "Time to check my density. Let's see if I got my Captain Man back."

"You realize if the beetles euphoric acid didn't work..." Gooch trails off and I look away with sadness.

I'll become homeless again if this doesn't work.

"You sure, Ray?" Henry confirms.

"Blast me." My dad demands and Gooch blasts Ray.

I was horrified to see my dad get blasted with such a powerful laser, I had to look away. Just hearing his groans was bad enough, I didn't want to look back and see my father dead.

Gooch turned off the laser and I took a peek to see my dad on the floor with smoke around him.

"Dad?" I say softly and I beam when he kicked up onto his feet.

"I'm okay!"

"Yes!" I laugh and run into his arms. He picks me up and kisses my cheek before Charlotte and Henry attack him with hugs.

My dad sets me down and Gooch gives him a high-five out of relief.

Henry's phone rings and he groans. "Ugh, it's my little sister."

My dad groans and Henry moves away. "What, Piper?" He listens. "Wow, please tell me all about it."

He sets his phone and runs to the tubes. "Let's go!"

Him and my dad stand under the tubes and press their belts; tubes encase them.

"Call it."

"Up the tube!" Henry calls and they get blasted up the tubes.

"Hello?" I look over at Henry's phone. "Henry? I am not okay!"
