Kayla woke the next morning wrapped in covers, she rolled over to find Harlee wasn't in bed. She got dressed in a mid length sundress, pulled up her hair, and headed down to help Anika with breakfast. She was becoming increasingly curious about the meat that tasted so sweet. She finally decided to ask.
"Mom- I mean An-"
"No, mom is fine." Anika said smiling as she kneaded dough.
"What is this meat? I know its not pig, or cow."
Anika took in a deep breath, looking her over, she didn't know if it was a good idea to tell her yet. "What would you not want it to be?" Anika asked as she kept kneading.
"I..I dont know."
"Human." Anika replied. Kayla stepped back for a moment, Anika turned to look at her. "Please don't worry."
"We eat....human?"
"Yes, it isn't that bad love." Anika reassured. "You have been eating it for the past two months."
Kayla steadied her, thinking about what that could mean in all reality. She looked towards the door for a moment, this place was different, but she understood. She had wondered why she didn't notice pigs being killed. "Uhm...I alright..well..that was a shock...how do you do it?"
Anika set down what she was doing and squinted. "You didn't run?"
"Why would I run?" She asked as she continued to slice meat up into small bits so they could be placed in the omelets. The pans sizzled and the smell in the kitchen was heavenly.
"You aren't afraid?"
Kayla hesitated for a moment. "You wouldn't kill me would you?"
"No."
"Then I have nothing to worry about."
Anika peered at the girl, concerned. "You aren't freaked out?"
"No, I am, just not to an extent of concern."
"Oh..well. Harlee sure got lucky, I screamed for a good while, however I wasn't brought into the family in a traditional way an-"
"What do you mean brought into the family traditionally?"
"Oh..to keep the family going we bring in husbands and wives for our kids, no one has ever chosen to come like you have. We try and find people who need a better life though, or need help."
"So you kidnap them?"
"Essentially."
"Oh.." her stomach turned a little.
"You seem more concerned about the kidnapping then anything else love, are you alright?"
"Yes...just doesn't their family miss them, try and find them?"
"We usually go for people with little family, or none at all."
"Oh.. alright, I guess if you are trying to help them."
"Yes, thats all."
"So uhm..sorry. Lot of information. Anyway, Harlee said something about more family coming to visit soon?"
"Yes, we were hopping that you would know before they came, so I guess what works. How is Valery?"
"Good, I figured I sit and do her hair and stuff before breakfast."
"She is still capable, only a month and a half along."
"Do we know how many kids she is having, since twins seems to be hereditary in this family."
Anika stiffened for a moment. "No, we won't know till they come."
"It is cool your first born wasn't a twin. Strange too."
"Yes, I know."
"Carter is different."
"Hmm?"
"He is colder than Alex and Harlee." She replied. "More intense is all."
"I suppose."
"So do we not leave this place then."
"No, not unless we need to, or the kids sneak out."
"Alright."
"Help me with the cookies?" Anika asked, she wanted to stop talking about it, needed to stop. She loved Carter and couldn't have anyone find out that he wasn't actually hers. She smiled as Kayla continued to help her, soon Valery made her way down the stairs. She didn't look pregnant, and it wasn't obvious that she still was looking for a way out. She had settled, but wasn't willing to stay, not with a baby.
"Valery, Kayla knows everything now, you dont need to worry about slipping up." Anika stated as she sat down at the kitchen table.
"Alright. Hey where is Carter? He wasn't in bed when I woke up."
"Neither was Harlee."
"The boys needed to go down to the lake today, fishing."
"Is Alex in bed?"
"No, she is in the barn. Working with the animals."
Just as they were speaking of Alex she kicked the door open, her left hand cut down the middle, her face bruised and a chunk of hair loose and bloody. Anika's eyes grew wide. "Alex what happened?" She screamed as she raced to her daughter. Alex dropped to her knees as she pointed towards the barn.
"He got out, the big one..." She whimpered, she moved her right hand from her stomach, a knife wound gushing blood.
Valery's eyes grew wide, she looked down to her stomach, the small life depending on her. She grabbed Kayla's hand and the two raced up the stairs locking themselves in. "Help me move the dresser." Valery begged. Kayla hesitated, pushed the dresser forward, slipped out the door and raced back down to help Alex. Valery slammed her fists againts the dresser as she watched out the window, she saw the man Alex was speaking about. He was like a scared animal, making his way to the house, Valery grabbed the knife on top of the dresser and waited.
Kayla was going to help save Alex's life, no matter what the possibility of survival was for herself.
Anika knew that they were the only members of the family in the small village, everyone else fishing, and the man had to of watched Alex race back towards home. A trail of blood gave her away, Anika set her daughter on the same couch that Carter was born on, they had moved back into the old house when Jace's parents had died. She wasn't going to loose her daughter, she wouldn't accept it.
Kayla grabbed a towel and helped apply pressure. "Is he coming?" Kayla asked, her eyes filled with fear. Alex cupped Kayla's cheek, blood staining her beautiful face.
"I don't know love." Anika replied as she grabbed a hatchet hanging on the wall, she was becoming old, but she was still strong. You had to be strong to survive this family.
"I will be okay." Alex muttered.
"Alex shut your mouth." Kayla whimpered. "Please."
"What, you wor--" she began to cough, blood covering her lips.
"Oh god..." Kayla cried, Alex looked her over. She was worried this would be her last night. She pulled her face close to hers, planting a small kiss on her lips. Kayla was shaking, she didn't know if she could loose Alex, she couldn't loose her. She kissed her back, almost desperate. She had never been interested in women before, but if she was going to loose Alex she had to know.
She began to sew the wound, after cleaning it. Alex was gripping the couch, her knuckles growing white. "Ah.."
"Shh..shh please Alex." Kayla whispered as tears fell from her colored eyes. Alex nodded as she bit her lip. Anika sewed her palm when the front door was kicked open. Both women turned to look at the man, he was naked dripping with sweat and his eyes were bloodshot.
"Take a step closer, I dare you." Anika growled as she grabbed the hatchet. The man steadied himself, then raced towards her. Anika held up the hatchet, she wasn't going to move. Just as the man got to her Anika side stepped, the man fell over his own feet plummeting down the basement stairs. Kayla looked to Anika.
"I can do it, help you daughter."
"You sure?"
"Yes, I want to prove I can protect this family." Kayla managed out. Alex smiled, a blush rushing over her already hot cheeks. Kayla grabbed the hatchet. She snarled and descended, the sound of her feet on the steps echoing. She had never seen the basement before, meat hooks covered the walls. Dried blood splattered the walls, the man groaned attempting to get to his feet. Kayla swung the hatchet, the man rolled and she hit the pavement. He chuckled as she stood grabbing for the weapon, she spun back getting the hatchet stuck into the wall.
He rushed her, she stepped back falling onto a table.
He growled and slammed her against it again and again. She kicked him but he caught her leg, her dress sliding up. His cock sprung catching a glimpse of her body. "No." She cried. "No."
He climbed on top of her, pulling up her dress and sliding down her underwear. She reached backwards towards the weapon he had dropped, letting him drop his guard. She waited as she attempted to settle himself she plunged the weapon into his skull, blood splattered her and he dropped falling to the floor.
She dressed herself and raced up the stairs falling into Anika's arms. Anika held her tight. "Alex is okay, you are okay." Anika promised. "Go up to Valery, she needs you right now."
Kayla nodded and made her way back to Valery. Valery held her when she came in, the two girls crying together. "I killed him, but he was going to rape me." She whispered.
Valery gulped. "He can't hurt you now."
Jace and the rest of the family came inside to see the blood, and Alex laying on the couch, sleeping and bloody. "What the hell happened?" Jace growled.
"Downstairs, Kayla almost got raped, your daughter almost died. One of the men you had in the barn got out."
"Valery?" Carter asked.
"Fine, we hid her away in you room." Anika replied, Carter raced to her.
"Kayla?"
"With her." Harlee thanked his mother after kissing Alex on the forehead, and raced up to her. Jace balled up his fist as he walked down the stairs, he wanted it to all work out.
He was cursing at himself, this was his fault.
