2 | A Different Kind of Mindset
I know. I know. Trying to squish the canons of two different shows into one universe is kinda strange. In case you need a lil explanation, "Espers" is just the name given to those with psychic related quirks thanks to the culture before quirks became a thing. They are also quirks, but are just called something different in certain regions. Similar to how some countries might call cookies "cookies" and others call cookies "chips." Same thing. Just called something different.
Also yes I threw Mob into a high school because 1. funny, 2. I just really don't want to write an entire sports festival right now. Cool as that could be, I prefer the more real-world battles. 3. Character development, ooyah.
And no I'm not going to fix the plot hole of Mob being in the 2nd year instead of the 3rd year of middle school. I was going off ages for some reason and yeah. Just pretend all that previous stuff just happened while he was in the 3rd year of middle school. Oki? 👌
Also yes spirits still exist.
===============================
][ Previously: Mob was recruited into UA. Not only so that he can learn to control his powers, but also so the staff can keep an eye on him and keep him from ever exploding and hurting others again. ][
Mob still had a few days to mentally prepare, since he had made the decision to go so early on. At school, he delivered the troubling news to each of his friends. The Body Improvement Club were the ones who took it hardest. After some discussion, they agreed to continue as before, even if that meant having to communicate over video call most of the time.
Word spread that he was moving quickly. Kids he didn't even recognize were bidding him a fair well. Was he...popular..? -no matter. He would be going to a whole new school anyways. No one would know him there... But..it was nice to see so many people actually acknowledge him, remembering his name even.
The reporter girl was the most disappointed of all the girls, since he was the only thing interesting about this entire town.
----------
"Aa-choo!" Oh no! Tsubomi hid her nose and flushing face from the other girls. Her friends started to ask what was wrong and to remove her hand. When all hope seemed to be lost, an old friend came to her rescue.
"Need a tissue?" Mob offered. Grateful beyond measure, Tsubomi snatched one and cleaned up her face. Mob tossed a trash bag into the can and Tsubomi threw her tissue in after. Her friends were gone now. It was just the two of them.
"..Thanks."
"Heh, no problem. It isn't often that I get to talk to you. How are you doing?"
"Oh- you know, mostly just studying." Tsubomi kicked the dust under her shoes. "...So, I heard you were moving away." Mob froze in place, diverting his eyes as a faint blush emanated from his cheek. "Where are you going?"
"U-U-U-UA!"
"Wait, what?! The hero school?! You haven't even graduated yet!" She was amazed, which made the poor boy blush even harder.
"I-I I was- well- I don't know.. It's a long story."
"Shigeo, this is great!" She lightly punched his shoulder and giggled. "I'm so happy for you! Finally, you get to show the whole world what you're made of!" Mob rubbed the sore spot on his arm and chuckled.
"You really think it'll be that big of a deal?"
"I mean, if you want it to be, yeah.. Unless you're still all about hiding your abilities from everyone."
Mob blushed again. "Yeah, that might be hard in a hero school.."
"Well," Tsubomi readjusted her bag. "I'll be rooting for you."
"You will?" Mob's eyes sparkled a little bit.
"Of course! You're my oldest friend, after all! Now just make sure you do your best, okay?!" She was so bubbly. So happy for him.
Shigeo's own little smile grew. "I- I will!"
Since he had no idea what else to do or say, Mob turned and left, spinning back around only to wave a brief goodbye. He really didn't want to just leave her like this, but.. what else was he supposed to say or do? Tsubomi found herself hesitating. Having a hard time lifting her hand to respond. Her smile was heavy. Heavier than it usually was.
When he was no longer looking at her, her hand dropped like a dead weight, her gaze landing on the ground. Her posture was so different all of a sudden. She couldn't even understand why it had become so hard to play happy today of all days.
Then she realized and looked back up. "Shigeo!!" She called. The boy was a distance away already.
"What is it!?"
"You still have my parents' phone number, right?!"
"Uh- yeah? I-I-I think so!"
"That's good!" She waved again and was the one to turn away this time.
That's all she needed. Weights fell from her shoulders by simply knowing he would be able to contact her if he needed to. In a sigh of relief, Tsubomi breathed. Though it had been a long time since they had last spoken, his familiar face was always a comfort in her chaotic life.
It sure would be strange no longer having him around, even as a background character.
----------
Mob spent his second to last day at school collecting everyone's phone numbers so that he could always call them, as well as hand out his own so they could always call him.
...If only he could teleport like the one guy. Then he would promise to do that every day...
----------
"Wait-wait, you're going to a Hero school??.. Why!?!" Reigen waved his hands around in the typical Reigen fashion, absolutely flabbergasted by his student's latest news. Mob stood stiffly, hardly believing it himself.
"They said they needed someone undercover to protect some of the students... Sounded pretty desperate, too. ... It would be..nice helping people for once."
"But yu-you are helping people out! Right here!" Reigen protested. Serizawa was standing behind Reigen's shoulder, just silently watching with worry clear on his face.
"I know, but..." Mob's head dropped. His hands tightened into fists. He didn't want to tell Reigen exactly why he was so driven to go. Might hurt his feelings if he was ever told it had to do with him learning to control his powers. The guy truly had helped him a lot, but... There was still something missing. Professional training. Yeah, maybe that was all he needed. "...I'm sorry."
All was silent in the small office. The three of them just standing around somberly.
"...Serizawa, you don't have any major connections to the people and places around here, right?"
Mob's head rose curiously. Mouth opening a little.
"N-no, not really anyone but-but you and Mob. There is a nice coffee shop I frequent sometimes, though."
"Yeah, same." Reigen casually stretched his arms, twisting around and striding back to his desk. "In fact, all I really have is portable; easy to fit into a van if I really tried.."
"Reigen..?" Mob couldn't believe his ears.
"Yeah, that's right!" The boy's master spun back around, this time with a wide grin on his face. "How about you say we get this show on the road?! Not like I'm just going to give up my best student that easily!" He chuckled. Mob's mouth broadened into a wholesome smile, eyes beginning to sparkle.
"You really mean it??"
"Of course I mean it! Where are you going again? Mustafa City?! That place must be FULL of lost souls and people needing our help! What about you, Serizawa? Looking to expand our empire a little?!"
"O-of course I am, sir!" The brunette stood at attention, the blondie now standing on his chair for some reason. It warmed Mob's heart to know that these guys were coming along at least. Just a couple familiar faces were sure to help a lot.
----------
That weekend came quicker than he had hoped. Mob's family made the trip to the foreign land via train alongside him. "There sure are a lot of trees." Mob commented, twisting his body around just so he could peer out the window. His brother only hummed a mild response. He was clearly a little nervous for his bro, but Mob wasn't so much, to his surprise. "Oh come on, Ritsu. Just think of it like I'm going on a school field trip. I'll be back for winter break. And I'll probably only attend a year and a half depending on how long they need me."
Ritsu sighed. "I know.. And I'm excited for you. It's just- you sure you can handle being so far from home?"
Mob stared down at the bench they both sat on. "Well.. I heard the class I'm joining has been moved into dorms apart from their families. If they can manage it, then, so can I." He tried to smile. In truth, he was hoping that staying away from home for a little bit might keep his family out of harm's way for a change.
"Sh-sh-shigeo!!" Dimple's voice emerged, sounding like he was in a struggle. Both psychic boys' heads turned around in search for him. The spirit phased from the floor, racing the train itself even inside the boxcar. "H-help!" Mob grabbed Dimple's hand and held on tight as the forces of weird physics tried to pull him back.
"Dimple, why are you acting so strange?"
"I'm a spirit! Do you know how hard it can be sometimes to keep up with inanimate objects?! Now bring me to that bar over there!" Mob stood up, Dimple in hand, and lifted the spirit high enough to latch onto one of the hand rails with his tiny spirit hands. He clung to it like an entire river was pushing against him, holding on for dear life.
"Thanks, buddy."
"Mm." Mob just sat down and stared out the window behind him again.
Finally, the small family (and Dimple) arrived at the city, where a handful of people waited for them. None recognizable. One man dressed in old western attire, a red cape, and a gas mask and funky hat led the bunch toward the family at the train station.
"Shigeo Kageyama, is it?" He asked. Mob's eyes widened, realizing this gun wielding hero was here for him.
"U-uh, yeah."
"Nice to meet yeh. Sorry the principle couldn't be here. I'll be your guide in his stead." The hero stuck out his hand. Mob had never been so close to a real hero before.. The two shook hands, a little stiffly on Mob's end. "The name's Snipe, in case you were wonderin'. I'm one of the teachers."
"Oh? Really? Are all the teachers heroes too?"
"All the ones for the hero related classes are at least." Snipe chuckled. He stood tall and placed his hands on his hips. A tall, and, intimidating figure he was.
Mob backed away as his parents berated the teacher with a slew of their own questions, mostly about where he would be staying and the quality of his living conditions. Snipe handled it well, assuring them that their son was in good hands here at the school...despite the rumors floating around about the place. Ritsu hung back with Mob, carrying some of his bags for him.
"Shigeo feels most comfortable when he has a set schedule and knows where he's headed to first!" His mom griped all mother-bear like.
"That's..why I'm here." Snipe sarcastically gestured around. "Follow me. It's still a pretty far drive." Mob's mom calmed down, now a little embarrassed, and followed the hero and his small band of strangers.
Everyone piled into a fancy van and the driver left the station.
Mob got a little jittery in that car while everyone around talked about stopping somewhere local to eat. In the end they all decided to get some ramen takeout, but Mob couldn't eat for fear or puking.
"He gets a little car sick.." His dad nervously rubbed his back, the boy now just staring at the floor with a box of ramen in his lap.
"In that case, we should probably get some fresh air." Snipe sighed. "We're only a twenty minute walk from campus anyway." Everyone agreed and the vehicle pulled over. Mob got to eat once he was feeling better as they walked.
As promised, only about twenty minutes later, everyone arrived at the impressive front gates of the iconic hero school. Mob just stopped and stared up at the massive building for a little bit. He never really expected to make it this far for some reason. Even though he had agreed to go, he didn't expect to actually go.
"You coming, Shigeo?!" Mob's mom called. The teen's eyes snapped into focus and he jogged to catch up with everyone else.
The tour of the school itself was pretty brief. It was so grand with massive halls and massive doors, but once you get used to that it's actually just like any other school.
"The food here's probably the best part about this place if I'm being honest." Snipe commented as he showed off the massive, high ceiling cafeteria. Their shoes squeaked in such an empty room. This place was like an entire mall! Mob was exceptionally slow, taking his time and soaking everything in.
He'd never gone to any other town but this one, long term. Never met any heroes like the ones all around here, and never in his life been so far away from his family as long as he would be soon.
As much as he worried he might regret this decision of his, he was actually a little excited too.
'Just another chance to become even better than I was before.'
----------
"And here's the dorms. You don't have to worry about running into too many other kids. All the students here locally are visiting their families."
'Oh so maybe there is a chance I can meet my family on the weekends.. That's a good sign.'
"Oh also there's an angry one inside, just a heads up." Snipe said as he placed his hand on the door knob. Mob's head sunk between his shoulders a little. Whatever that meant probably wasn't good.
The door was opened and everyone quietly slipped inside. They were met with a large living space, complete with couches, chairs, and a TV on the wall. There were so many large windows that no lights even needed to be turned on.
Immediately sat up an older girl with brown hair, who'd just been lounging on one of the couches. She looked frantic and hurried to clean up the packets of mochi that'd been relaxing with her.
"Woah, wh-who scheduled a parade!?" She laughed nervously.
"We're just showing around a new classmate."
"Wait, a new WHAT?? ...NOW??" The girl jumped up. Her eyes landed on Ritsu and she smiled. "Oh! Hello, I'm Ochako Uraraka!" She smiled at him. "Not to offend, but you look a little young to-"
"-I'm not the new student. My brother is." Ritsu kindly pointed at the teen halfway cowering behind him, not standing out enough to even catch the girl's attention until pointed to.
"I'm Mob.." He bashfully rose his hand in greeting. The girl smiled again, this time at him.
"That's a cute nickname! Mind I ask why you're only now joining UA in the second semester?" Though she genuinely was trying to be polite, a hint of confusion and even jealousy cracked through.
"It's, um... I'm-"
"He's here by recommendation as a part time student. Principle's orders." Snipe danced around the question a little bit, but the girl seemed content enough with that.
"Oh! Well in that case let me show you arou-"
"uraRAKA!!" A growl-turned-shout echoed down the hall behind her. From around a corner emerged a blond, spiky haired fellow. Oh, he must be the angry guy Smite had warned about. "YOU LEFT YOUR TRASH IN YOUR ROOM D### B- ... WHO THE H### ARE THESE GUYS!?!" Referring to the caravan of people at the doors. Mob and his family all inched back a little as the stomping teen emerged from the darkness.
"Bakugo, this is Shigeo Kageyama. He will be joining your class."
"NOT ANOTHER NERD TO CLEAN UP AFTER!!" He groaned. The angry teen dropped the bags he was dragging around as he came up close. Mob already began to sweat nervously. "How the h### did you manage to get into UA anyway, extra? You don't look special or anything. What's your quirk-?" He berated him with question after question, towering intimidatingly over the other the closer he got. When he was only a few feet away and not stopping, Mob put up a near-invisible barrier, which the blonde ran into.
"WHAT?! Oh, real funny, shorty!" He stumbled back and snarled. "WHY DON'T YOU COME OUT AND FIGHT ME HEAD ON?" Punching the barrier.

"Woah, is that your quirk?!" A green haired boy ran out from the direction the kitchenette he was in, rubber cleaning gloves on his hands. "You can make force fields? That's so cool!!" Mob turned his head to the brighter individual with a little smile.
"Thanks.." He said bashfully. "I can actually do a lot more. I'm an Esper. -Um. I mean I have a telekinesis quirk." He corrected, since he wasn't sure if the kid knew the term or not.
"Really?! I heard about Espers a while back! Haven't met anyone with telekinesis; they're usually not from around here! Ooh! Mind if I-?!"
"-SHUT UP, DEKU! I WAS TALKING TO THE TWERP FIRST!!"
"I-I-I'm gunna go get my journal real quick!.." He turned to run away. As he ran, he looked back and waved at someone only briefly. "Hi, Mr. Aizawa!"
"Midoriya." Came a dull response from one of the strangers who'd been following the whole time. Mob turned around curiously. It was the guy with long black hair, black clothes, and generally looked like a tag-along more than someone these kids actually knew.
"This is your home room teacher, by the way." Snipe pointed him out. The teacher's eyes then dropped down to meet Mob's head-on. Mob..was a little terrified. "He didn't want me to introduce you to him until he got a good read on your personality first." The mysterious teacher then huffed faintly and severed himself from the rest of the group to with a stoic ura about him.
"Uraraka, where's Aoyama?" The dark stranger asked the girl as he passed her.
"He said he was going to his room last I heard of him.."
"Hm. Alright." He wandered-on as if he had some place to be.
After things settled a little and Bakugo was instructed to stand in a corner, the tour continued, this time led by a lady with purple hair who actually knew the dorm's layout. The brunette girl tagged along just because she was bored doing anything else.
"Ohhh, so that's why the extra room was being built!.. Thought it was just for storage. Uraraka commented as the door to Mob's new room was opened. Inside it were the bare bones of any bedroom: a bed and dresser.
...Reminded Mob of his own room back at home...
Mob and his family were left alone together in that room where they together unpacked the eldest son's things while reminiscing over how much they all were going to miss him.
"You all sound like I'm going to be gone forever." Mob, pushed into feeling a little too sad for his own comfort, tried to steer their comments. "Please, It only took us half a day to get here. I can still come over to visit you guys on the weekends.
"Ohh, but I'm still going to miss seeing my little boy every day.." His mom waddled up to him and wrapped his body in a warm hug. Mob just chuckled. He hardly saw his parents any time other than dinner on the daily, so it wouldn't be too big of a deal for them after a couple weeks. When the room was personalized with all of Mob's clothes and little decor, they gave him goodbye hugs. Again they hugged him after leaving the building itself with him, and then again at the gate of the UA campus where their ride was waiting.
"Don't be gone too long, brother!" Ritsu waved, smiling a little. Mob mirrored, happy but sad at the same time. Happy to be a part of something new and bigger than himself. Sad to see his old life fade away so quickly before his eyes.
When he returned to the dorms, a certain green haired boy waited there for him anxiously, hovering over the newcomer with his pen and notebook.
"My quirk really isn't all that special.." Mob said, staring down at his hand.
"You sure? Because I think it is! All quirks are awesome!"
Really...?
This place really did have a whole different outlook on power.
"By the way, why are you and the other blond guy so beaten up?" Mob finally acknowledged the bandages and scrapes he had been ignoring so far. Deku chuckled, scratching the back of his head with an awkward look on his face.
"Oh, we, um.. We...got into a little bit of a fight.."
Oh...
So it was this kind of a school.
