Chapter - 1
Myra's POV
"Neev is fine now Mr. Singhania. His reports are clear." I mentioned gulping hard staring at the person sitting besides hospital bed.
"Hmm" Mr. Singhania, caressed hairs of his 6 months son who was sleeping under effects of medicines.
"You can take him home tomorrow morning."
"Ok" I heard his pale voice. His red swollen eyes told story of his sleepless nights
"I will take your leave."
I waited for his answer but his son had held his entire attention.
I came out taking deep breath. I badly need a coffee now.
"Hey Myra, how's that little boy?" Nancy, my collegue asked from behind.
"He is fine for now." I crossed my fingers hoping best for the little one.
"That's good. This was third time that boy had high fever right."
"Yes. His innocent soul has crushed by some selfish people." I felt disgusted.
"Take some rest. Since morning you are with that boy. Now his father is here you can go home and relax." Nancy started brewing coffee for herself.
"No I have to see Granny, I haven't seen her from morning." I shook her head taking deep breath.
"Dr. Myra, Dr Andrew was calling you." Nurse informed.
"Ok I will see him now."
"Hey Andrew. You called me" I entered in his cabin.
Even though Andrew was senior to me we were friends from my day one of internship.
"Yes please"
We discussed about Granny's health. She was suffering from blood cancer from last year. She was admitted in the same hospital, I am doing my internship. Trillium Health Care, Toronto.
"Myra, There are very less chances of her survival. May be max 6 or 7 months she has." Andrew squeezed my palm.
"I know." I flickered to control my tears.
'Granny is the only one whom I can call as my family. Mom died 5 years back and Dad.'
'Should I even call him Dad?'
"I had a discussion with trustees. They have already exempt you from all hospital charges but medicine charges and specialist fees... I am sorry but you have to arrange it."
"I understand. I will see what I can do."
"Myra I am your friend. If you need any help I am there."
"Thanks Andrew you have been there always for me in this last year."
"Myra it's hard but be practical. Your granny does not have much time. There is no cure. You can shift her in any community centre old age home care. It will lessen your financial burden at least." I stared at his concerned eyes.
"No I will manage."
"I am there with you always" he wrapped his arms around my shoulder.
"Thanks for being there for me."
"Always"
Andrew is the only one who had supported me in this last year.
I took leave from Andrew and went to meet Granny. I entered inside intensive care unit. My Granny was sleeping under medicines effect.
"Granny, what should I do? I don't know."
"I am tired Granny" I held her withered palm in mine keeping my head on her bed.
After spending some time with Granny, I came back to my home. It was small rented studio apartment which I could afford from my salary after spending huge amount on Granny's treatment.
'Should I ask Dad's help?' This thought is now a days lingering continuously on my mind.
'Will he help me?'
My Dad, Ashok Sehgal, billionair of this city will not even spend a penny for his daughter. He did not even paid any visit when Mom passed away. He was busy with his second wife.
My mom, Shivani Gupta/Sehgal got divorced from Dad when she found out that he cheated on her with his secretory. That was the last nail on the coffin to break already tormented relation. I was just 10 at that time.
Thankfully court gave my custody to Mom. After divorce we moved to Calgary to Granny's place. She and Granny raised me with care and love. When I thought everything settled down Mom met with an accident leaving me and Granny alone.
I grabbed scholarship to take admission in medical college. I earned internship in Toronto's best hospital Trillium which compelled me and Granny to shift back to my birth city.
I used to do part time jobs. Mom's savings were enough for me and Granny but last year, Granny was detected with blood cancer. I am trying my best to get her best treatment but alas...
I just hope, I can be able to give her peaceful death. These medicines and treatment will not heal her disease but at least it will minimize her pain in her last days.
But hope does not give you financial help.
"Get out of here, you will not get a single penny from us. Ashok what are you waiting for throw her out."
These were the words from Mrs. Ashok Sehgal when two months back I went to ask some help from my Dad.
"Your Mother was cursed lady. Your sister ruined us. We are paying for your sister's sins. Just get lost." Dad was also not less.
"Dad, Mom never asked anything from you. This is about Granny. Please." I had to beg in front of him for the first time.
When it comes to family I give a damn to my self respect.
'Gaurds throw her out and make sure she should never enter the premises.' Mrs. Sehgal's warning closed that door for me.
I was staring at the ceiling of my house with no hope waiting to pass another sleepless night.
Next morning, after reaching hospital first thing I went to see Neev.
"Neil you are coming back home with Neev" I heard Mrs. Singhania stating in her usual ordering tone.
But her son, the mighty Neil Singhania, ignored her order and passed wrapping his six month son Neev in his arms.
He was least bother about anyone. His eyes were only focused on his son's sleeping figure. He was followed by Julia, his house keeper with infant's essentials.
"Neil, I am talking to you." Mrs. Singhania held his arm raising her voice.
"I don't need anyones help to take care of my son. I am capable of it." His cold voice loosened Mrs. Singhania's grip over his arm.
He left taking long strides leaving behind his mother in shocked state.
'He has changed a lot.'
I left deep sigh turning to go back to my regular patients.
'Please god... please help little Neev. He is innocent.'
Entire day, Neev's thoughts kept on bringing fresh tears in my eyes. I had tough time to push them back.
'His family is with him to take care. His father is with him.'
I had to make my mind remind this to concentrate on my own miseries.
I tried all options trustees recommendation to bank loan to community help but nothing was working out.
'I am sorry Granny.'
'I am sorry Mom.'
'I could not be a best daughter.' tear dropped on the picture which had me, Mom and Granny.
'Ding' Door bells sound broke my trance.
It was 9:30 of night. I calmed my self and wiped my tears and went to open door of my flat to see intruder.
"Hello, Dr. Myra Sehgal"
'What is he doing here?'
I was shocked to see Mr. Dev Singhania Standing at my door step.
"I am sorry to come at this hour but can I come inside?" His professional tone scared me for a moment.
'Oops I need to invite him inside.'
"Yes sure. Please come inside." I gave him way to enter.
"Please have a seat." I offered to unexpected guest.
"Thanks" he sat on chair.
"Nice house" his eyes roamed around my apartment.
"Thanks."
"I prefer straight talks so let me come to the point on my unexpected visit to your house." His mere presence, his calculative demeanour made me gulp my own saliva.
I was still blank and could just shook my head.
"Your Granny. I can sponsor her treatment, her medical expenses as well as I will bring best medical help for her from all over the world. You will not have to worry about it."
Hard core businessman was trying to make a deal with me. But business means invest... earn... and make profits.
"Thank you Sir, but why will you help me? I mean. What do you need from me?"
"Marry my son."
His words threw icy water on me numbing my entire body.
"Wait. What?" After almost two minutes I could find my own voice.
"You heard right Dr. Myra Sehgal. In return you will have to marry my son Neil Singhania." He kept his eyes on me without blink.
His words chocked me and I felt breathless for a moment.
"Sir, you are asking me to marry my sister's husband?"
