1. Broken Strings

Marinette knew people would call her lucky if they found out she was Ladybug. They'd say they were envious and that they would give anything to be like her. Sometimes Marinette wished she could pass on the responsibility of being Ladybug and Paris' superhero over to someone else, but she knew she'd miss it and Chat Noir too much. As annoying as both may be, she did care about them.

If she were being honest, she was the one who was envious of everyone else. At least they knew who they were meant to be with for the rest of their lives. At least they had someone to spend the rest of their lives with. Marinette? It appeared as though fate had changed its mind and removed her from the equation when it decided that her soulmate would go to someone else instead.

Despite the obvious fact that she and Adrien would never be together, she still kept her foolish hope that maybe fate would change its mind again and connect them again. Adrien never actually knew they had been soulmates once, and Marinette honestly didn't know if that made her situation better or worse.

Marinette herself actually didn't know for a long time. She only knew that first day they met, when their hands brushed, and the red string tied around their fingers was so obvious, how could she have not seen it before? But then he left, and as soon as that car door shut, the string broke and she was soulmateless. She didn't know why. Nothing could break a string except fate and that was the question she has been asking herself ever since then. Just why fate had decided to play a twisted game and make her lose her soulmate just as she found him?

She sulked for a while, and then she found out that she wasn't the only one with a recently broken string. Sadly, it would've been better if the one with the broken string wasn't Chat and his former soulmate hadn't been her. That was probably why their strings had snapped, though. Fate had mistakenly tied them to the wrong person, and now they were stuck without someone. Maybe they could've gotten together and tied their broken strings themselves, but for the sake of protection for everyone, they dared not reveal who they were.

So life went on. Marinette and Chat were destined to be alone, and everyone else was tied to their other halves. Marinette never really got over her soulmate-induced crush on Adrien, she was still extremely awkward around him, but he never seemed to mind. He paused and furrowed his eyebrows in confusion sometimes, but he always smiled at her after she managed to semi-clear herself up. When she was Ladybug, Chat attempted to woo her into agreeing to reveal themselves. Unfortunately for him, her sense of protection dominated over her longing for a soulmate.
