Unsent Letters, Part 1

July 19, 1979

Dear Georgia,

I can't believe you're leaving. I heard about your dad getting that job up in Wisconsin—Mom told me after soccer practice yesterday. She said you guys are moving at the end of the week. It just feels so weird, you've always been here. You're part of Hawkins. It's not gonna feel the same without you here.

What are we gonna do without you? You're like the only reason our team did as well as we did this year. I mean, of course Jen is a great goalie, but you dominate the field. I think Penny Jacobs from Roane County Middle is going to be scared of you forever. I feel sorry for her, cause she doesn't know you're actually the nicest person in the world.

And the prettiest.

What am I gonna do without you?

Sincerely,

Robin Buckley

Dear Georgia,

What a weird twist of fate. I only just found my farewell letter to you from middle school earlier today, and now I'm walking through the school hallways and suddenly you're there? It feels like I've seen a ghost.

Are you really back? I thought you were gone forever. You never came back to visit, even at the holidays. So you being back must mean something, right? Did you move back home?

I haven't heard from you in years. I really thought all my feelings were just a silly middle school thing. I thought I was over you.

But somehow, you got even prettier.

Fuck.

Sincerely,

Robin Buckley
