Chapter 5 (Ben's story)

We were sitting on the rooftop. It was dark outside, so that we could see the city lights.

"So why are you here? Not to be mean or anything but you look so normal, Not like the rest." I said.

He looked at me and chuckled.

"Yeah, well, I'm good at hiding it." He said.

I looked at him, waiting for him to tell me.

-

My older sister, Liz, and I came from school like we did every day, and I know what would happen if I came home that day.

"Are you ready?" She asked, looking at me when we stepped out of the car. I nodded, and we when inside.

"Your both late!" She yelled as we walk through the door.

And with her, I mean my aunt. She looked at us while walking back in fore in front of us.

"W-were s-sorry, Mr. Lewis wanted to talk to me about some homework," Liz said quietly.

My aunt stopped walking and slapped my sister across the cheek.

I rush to her side while she cups her cheek with her hand.

"Don't speak until I say you can, and don't lie about homework. You were with him to do other stuff. You're just like your mother." She yelled at Liz.

You see, we moved here since my mom died a year ago. I was sixteen, and my sister was eighteen. We still have a dad, and we loved him, and he loved us, but he is in the military, so he's gone a lot. We don't say anything to our dad because we don't want him to be unhappy, like when mom died.

We moved in with our mom's sister and her boyfriend. In the beginning, everything was fine. But after a month, things change. They were both drunk most of the day, they would beat us over some silly things, or they would give us no food for a week. They locked our door at night, so we don't run away. Yeah, my sister and I share a room if you want to know.

We hate it here. They treat us terribly.

"Both of you to your room, no dinner tonight." She said, walking away back to the TV.

"Come before we get in more trouble," I said, walking upstairs to our room. She followed and went straight to bed because we were both tired. I lay my head on the pillow and fall asleep.

We woke up by a door slamming open downstairs.

"What's time is it?" Liz asked, rubbing her eyes.

"Four in the morning," I said, lying back down. I was almost back asleep when suddenly our bedroom door swung open. Our aunt's boyfriend walks inside, bringing the smell of alcohol with him inside. Our aunt walks inside, who was drunk as well.

She grabs my sister by her hair and throws her on the ground.

" Leave her alone." I yell, running to her, but the boyfriend grabs me and throws me on the ground kicking me in my back and stomach." No, don't hurt him." Liz yelled at him. I couldn't move from the pain.

"You slut, if you want to be like your mom, why don't you go with Dave to our room." She said, grabbing her dragging her out the room, followed by him with a smirk on his face. I run to the door, but they locked it.

I was banging on the door, screaming Liz her name. I look around and saw the window. Quickly I open it and climb down. It was raining, so it was slippery, after a few times almost falling, I safely hit the ground I run to the back door and open it.

I run upstairs to their room. I could hear her scream. I open the door and saw that my aunt held my sister's hands above her head while Dave ties her feet to the bed frame." Stop." I yelled while I push Dave of her. He hit the floor, and I begin to punch him in the face a view time. I heard something behind me, like a gun that gets loaded, so I look behind me and saw my aunt pointed a gun at me.

I got off of him and backed away from him.

"You little piece of shit." He yelled, standing up, taking the gun out of her hand pointing it back to me.

"Out of the room, NOW!" He yelled at me, but I didn't move.

"Not without my sister," I said, moving to her.

"No, leave her here, or he shot her." My aunt said, standing next to him. I couldn't let her die, so I nodded and walk to the door. I passed by the bed and looked at my sister. She had tears in her eyes, and I mouthed sorry to her. She nodded, but something in me said I couldn't leave her here.

How can someone hurt their own family like this all those years? The anger in me boiled up, and I stopped walking and turn around. I jump up at my aunt's boyfriend, hitting him in the face what makes him drop the gun. I took it and pointed at my aunt, her face turn with fear." you piece of shit." He said, standing up looking at me with anger in his eyes. He saw I had the gun in my hands and laugh.

"You're not going to shoot me, your too weak for that, just like your dad." He said, laughing.

When he said it, something snapped in me. I could feel my finger pull the trigger and the sound of the gun going off. My aunt screams and jumps back. He fell to the ground and was dead in a minute.

"How dear you, you killed him." She screamed at me, walking closer. I load the gun. She stepped closer when I saw something behind her back and saw that it was a knife.

I quickly pull the trigger and shot her. She looked at me in shock, but I didn't feel any regret for pulling the trigger. She felled down, and I drop the gun on the floor. I turn around and untie my sister. She quickly pulls me in a hug when she saw my face turn into a sad expression.

"I kill them," I said blankly, looking at her.

"It's okay you did the right thing." She said, hugging me more.

"I killed them," I said in a whisper.

The police came and took us with them to the office. They asked questions, and we told the whole story about them. They called our dad, and he came an hour later.

"I'm so sorry, guys." My dad said, pulling us in a hug.

"It's not your fault," Liz said with tears in her eyes.

"You didn't know," I said, pulling away.

"Why didn't you tell me?" He asked, looking sad.

" We didn't want you to be unhappy," I said.

My dad was just about to say something when a policeman came to us.

"Mister Craig, your son has to come with us." He said, taking my arm.

"What, why." My dad said, shocked.

"Your son killed two people, one of them was armed, the other one not." He said, pulling my hands behind my back, handcuffing me.

"But he was protecting his sister." My dad said to defend me.

"Sorry, sir, I can't do anything about it." He said, pulling me away from my family. I look behind me and saw my sister crying in my dad's arms. They guide me to my cell, and I spend the night in its thing of what happened that night. I spend three days there, and after that, they brought me here. Here I did the first cut on my wrist, and I did it every day. It took the pain away.

-

"And you didn't see your family after that night?" I asked when he finest his story.

"No, and that happened a year ago. They don't allow visitors, but maybe soon I get to see them." He said, looking at me. I could see how hurt he was about this, so I hugged him.

"I'm sorry," I said, still hugging him.

"It's not your fault." He said, pulling away.

"Come, let's go. It's late." He said, standing up.

I stood up, and we walk downstairs. The whole way to my room was quiet. We didn't say any word. We came to a stop at my room, and I turn to Ben.

"Thanks for listening. I needed that." He said before walking away, not looking back at me.

"You're welcome," I whisper while watching him turn the corner to his room.
