Chapter 17
I let out a sigh as I leaned on the headboard of my bed. My fever had disappeared finally, but I was still receiving the effects of the nausea and headaches, as well as weakness. Mr. Hanekoma hadn't come back with an answer to the sigil on my back and I tried not to dwell too much on it. I knew I wouldn't get any answers anyway and it gave me a headache just thinking about it. Joshua hadn't come back since the other day when I asked about the sigil. He wouldn't tell me what he knew about (not that I expected an answer from him) but just brushed it off and said he had to take care of something since a Game was starting. He had to look over the Game to judge the players, to see who was 'worthy' enough to gain a second chance at life. Neku, surprisingly, agreed to be Conductor for this Game, despite the fact that it would mean being a Reaper for over a week, since that was what was originally decided. Joshua must've told him something or promised
My wing was almost fully healed from letting it sit, and from my excelled healing power, which I thankfully hadn't lost yet. Though that power would surely disappear with whatever else I had lost. I reached over and picked up a book from the nightstand with shaky hands as I brought it over to me with a grunting noise. Mr. Hanekoma had brought in my favorite book while I was sleeping at some point and left it on the table so I wouldn't be completely bored out of my mind. Just as I turned the page to the beginning, my phone buzzed and I picked it off of the nightstand to look at it. It was a text from Shiki, asking if I was alright from our last meeting together. I waited a minute before responding with a yes.
Almost instantly, she responded with a text, asking to come and hang out with her and her friends. I took one glance at my wings and thought about my 'sickness' and told her I couldn't come. When I was about to put my phone away, it buzzed again but this time, it was Solaris, asking about the event coming up. I responded with the same answer I gave Shiki and the corners of my lips tugged downwards, seeing how I wasn't able to go. Even if no Composers went, it was still a fun event to be at with the colorful balloons, and the positive energy and imagination from everyone who was able to go. I had gone to it last year with Solaris and had a blast. Then again, I doubted Joshua wanted to keep me out of his sight for too long anyways. Telling Mr. Hanekoma to keep an eye on me while he dealt with the Game. Although, when he left before, the day he was taking care of me, I had a strange feeling that he wasn't being all too truthful with his answer to me. It's highly possibly that Mr. Hanekoma knows what's going on, but I was usually left in the dark on these kinds of things.
This was the part where I enjoyed being an Onlooker, because I had access to all of this information and anything else I needed. Although, I didn't particularly enjoy just spying into other people's business like that while observing.
I set the book down and swung my legs over the side of my bed. I stood up and nearly fell over from my legs which were like jelly. I leaned against a nearby wall as I stumbled onto it and made my way over to the dresser as I pulled out some comfy clothes which took some effort. After I got the new clothes, I made my way over to my bathroom as I set my clothes on the counter and leaned down towards the bathtub faucet as I turned it on, letting the water warm up as slow as it did. After closing the door (making sure to lock it), I took some scissors and cut the bandages off, watching as they floated to the ground in waves. I looked at the wing that was still healing in the mirror. It wasn't as mangled as before, but feathers were missing in various patches across it On the featherless parts of the wing were some scars that would most likely not fade away.
I slowly peeled away the clothes that were stuck to my skin as my shirt even tore a little as I took it off. It was a low cut in the back, which meant that I didn't have to worry about changing my frequency, again, to accommodate with my large pearly white wings which would get in the way. After taking off the old clothes I had been wearing for a few days. I turned off the faucet and stepped into the water as I sat down in it, welcoming its warmth from the coldness of my room.
Joshua was right. Mr. Hanekoma really needed to add a heater or I was going to go and buy one myself just to make sure I was warm at night and even during the day since it was getting colder for an unknown reason. Though it would be obvious to assume it had to do with the sudden weather change that occurred recently when it was pounding rain on the windows.
I leaned back in the tub and closed my eyes as I looked up at the ceiling, making little shapes out of the texture on it. A smile crept up onto my face as I dunked my hair under the water and began to clean it, noticing the bottle of bubbles sitting next to the tub. With a soapy hand, I grabbed it and poured some of it into the tub as I began to swish it around, hoping it would make some bubbles. It would've been easier to do this, had I put bubbles in while the tub was filling up with water, but I forgot I even owned this. Bubbles began to slowly appear as I played with them, acting like a child.
It had been awhile before my fingers were wrinkly and I had fully bathed and cleaned myself. I smelled much better as tried to examine my back in the mirror to see the mark that was supposedly the sigil. Sighing to myself, I downgraded my frequency and could see my back clearly, even though I forced my neck to move from it being stiff as always. My face paled when I saw the mark that took up half of my back. It was like a gratified version of the symbol that was on the player pin, for those playing the Reaper's Game. It was made up of multiple dull colors that perfectly blended in with each other to create a value/shading effect. It seemed to glow as just looking at it caused my imagination to drain quicker.
I know that I've seen that symbol before, but from where?
It looked so familiar but at the same time, a distant memory, never going to resurface again.
Under the sigil, however, were two white, angel wing tattoos that took up my whole back. When my frequency was tuned down, my wings were, to put it simply, 'stored' in my back as the tattoo of two wings that reached from my upper back all the way to my lower back.
I clothed myself after putting on some lotion and walked out of the bathroom once I finished getting ready fully. My stomach growled and I held a hand up to it before groaning, leaning down slightly as I grabbed the side of my head. A searing pain hit me as I became nauseated all of a sudden. Where did this come from?
I stayed there for a moment before there was a knock on the door.
"Come in."
Mr. Hanekoma entered and looked as if he disapproved of me being out of my bed, because he had frowned slightly when he saw me clutching the side of my head in pain. My eyes had shut and there were footsteps that approached me as someone supported my body and helped me walk to my bed as I stumbled and leaned on him for balance. I was helped onto my bed which made my face heat up in embarrassment from them having to help me so much
"Thank you," I said as I looked up at Mr. Hanekoma as I adjusted my body to make myself more comfortable. My voice was better than before, although not fully as clear as it had been. "How's the Game going?"
"I'll be surprised if Neku doesn't go insane by the end of the week." I smiled slightly and rolled my eyes, imagining the thought of Joshua having Neku act like a dog since he's technically in a higher position than Neku, who was only a Conductor. The Composer was definitely above the position Neku had, and no one knows how Joshua will act from time to time. He's a loose cannon.
"Yeah, so what did happen to the previous Conductor? The one after Megumi," I asked. Megumi Kitaniji was the previous Conductor of the Reaper's Game, who was erased after a game with Joshua to try and decide whether or not to destroy Shibuya.
"Who knows. We can probably safely assume that Josh erased him. He wasn't too fond of him, and neither was I to be honest," Mr. Hanekoma shrugged. "You hungry?" I was about to respond when my stomach answered for me, causing my face to heat up again. He laughed as he ruffled my hair, despite my protests. I fixed it with my fingers as he walked out of the room and his footsteps echoed as he moved further away, and to the kitchen.
He reappeared with some food which smelled really good. Mr. Hanekoma handed me the plate and I took a bite of the food he had brought, having regained enough strength for that, at least. He sat down on the edge of my bed as he folded his hands together. I smiled at the thought of him being a father to me, to which, he already acted like one in my eyes.
"I'm sure you know, but Josh asked me to keep an eye on you and make sure you don't disappear," Mr. Hanekoma said. "It's quite obvious that you two like each other." I gagged and nearly choked on the food in my mouth.
"Why? Why do you always have to go and say things like that around me? Don't you ever tease Joshua about this stuff?" I asked, swallowing the food in my mouth with difficulty. Mr. Hanekoma scoffed as he pat my leg.
"That wouldn't be as interesting now would it? Besides, that's your job. I just make sure he doesn't do anything stupid."
"Uh huh, I'd be saying that too," I mumbled, suddenly not feeling as hungry anymore. I looked at the wall which had become more interesting at that moment.
"But I do have real news that you might enjoy hearing," Mr. Hanekoma said. I raised an eyebrow at him as I was genuinely curious about what he could have to say.
"Go on. Don't leave me hanging like that," I said.
"I think I found a way to get rid of the imagination-reversal sigil on your back, or at least stop it."
