Chapter 18:
"Riley girl, get over here and give me a hug, babycakes." Charlie hollered over all of the other people trying to eat their breakfast in peace.
I walked over towards their table, still holding Jessa. Aiden and I scrambled to keep up with her long legs. I was panicking when I got to the table on the other side of the restaurant. I felt Charlie's arms wrap around me. He picked me up and swung me around like Aiden did to Jessa. He placed me back down and grabbed my hands. Charlie looked back at Aiden and down to my hand, most likely looking for the same thing Luanne was looking for earlier. No ring, I was single and pathetic everybody. Charlie leaned back and looked me over from head to toe and whistled. My cheeks were almost purple from the attention.
"Damn, you are more delicious than ever. How's that right hook of yours?" He joked with me.
"Not sure. I haven't needed it in a while." I said, biting the inside of my cheek.
I still hadn't dared to look over to where Ezra was. I could feel his eyes on me and I knew his were not the only eyes staring at me from across the table. Aiden, on the other hand, was staring directly at the table, about to jump over it to get to Ezra.
"Aiden, Riley." Ezra said, clearing his throat to find his voice again. His voice shook a little as he spoke. It was almost imperceptible. I wondered if anyone else had noticed his confidence wavering.
"Ezra." Aiden said harshly.
"Ezwa!" Jessa yelled and practically leapt from Luanne's arms into his. Next to Ezra was his fiancé Jenna; her dark eyes were filled with hate as she stared me down. She pulled her face in a frown when she looked at me. She turned back to Ezra and crossed her arms over her chest. She looked like she wanted to punch him. Jenna recognized me from the bar. I knew it immediately. Ezra must not have told her the truth about who I was. He gave her a sheepish look back. He knew he was caught.
"You guys should have breakfast with us." Luanne suggested.
"NO!" Ezra and I both yelled in unison.
"We're all adults here. Well, except that little doll baby." Charlie said, pointing at Jessa. Charlie sat back down and stared at his nephew, challenging him. He looked back over his shoulder at me and said, "I would be totally offended if you three don't join us. Riley, you don't want to break an old man's heart, do you?"
I looked over to Aiden, who shrugged. He was going to do whatever I told him we were going to do. I looked at Jessa, who was wrapped up in her Dad. She wasn't going to help me and if I tried to pull her away now, even if Unca Den was with us. I sighed, giving in even though I knew it was a mistake.
Charlie grinned the same wicked half-smile his nephew used to give me when he knew he had won. It was the same look Jessa gave me earlier today. Damn this family with their strong genes. Charlie called over to the waitress, asking for three more place settings.
Luanne sat down on the other side of Ezra and stroked Jessa's leg. Charlie moved down a seat and patted the chair for me to sit next to him. Charlie conveniently sat me directly across from Ezra. I swear Charlie had planned it this way when he invited us to eat with them. Aiden moved to sit on my other side. He grabbed my hand under the table and squeezed it to reassure me he was here for me.
We all sat quietly until Luanne broke the silence. "So, Riley, what have you been up to since we last saw you?"
"Just working a lot and taking care of Jessa." I said, sipping a glass of water. I didn't even have to look back over at Jenna or Ezra; they both were still staring at me.
"So, how long have you two been together?" Charlie asked, motioning to Aiden and me.
"We're not together." I said too quickly before I could catch myself. Aiden squeezed my hand tighter under the table and kicked me.
I saw a glimpse of a smile on Luanne's face and she turned to try to hide it. I'm not sure why this breakfast was all about me. It should be about Jessa. I wanted the attention off me, but I was never going to get what I wanted when it came to this family.
"Well, if you're still single babycakes, you know where I live. My nephew may have been a dumbass, but I know quality when I see it." Charlie did not have a filter. I turned bright red and could feel the flush spreading across my chest. Aiden squeezed my hand even tighter and I shook my head to tell him to back down. This was just Charlie; he wasn't a threat.
"Charlie, you only like her because she is a fucking bar slut." Jenna huffed, finally finding her voice. Everyone's eyes turned to her, including Ezra's. He did not look pleased with his fiancé's outburst and he covered Jessa's ears.
"Jen, three-year-old sitting right here." Ezra said, trying to keep his calm.
"Don't look at me like that." She snapped at Ezra before turning her attention back to me. "I saw you looking at him at the bar like a bitch in heat."
"You don't know what you're talking about." I told her, my vision was turning red.
"Riley," Aiden leaned into me, trying to reign me back in.
I took a deep breath and looked over at Jessa, leaning against Ezra's chest with his hands still covering her ears. I would keep myself under control for her. I took a sip of the water in front of me, trying to distract myself from the anger building inside of me.
Jessa pulled on Ezra's shirt, wanting to tell him something. She was acting shy around the large group of people. The outbursts from a few seconds ago had her on edge. He leaned down to her and she whispered in his ear. A huge smile spread across his face and his eyes lightened in amusement at the sweet little gesture.
Jenna had her arms across her chest, pouting while she watched Ezra give Jessa all his attention. Was she really jealous that his daughter wanted to tell him something?
"Really?" He said back to Jessa and looked over to Aiden and me with his mouth hanging open. He pulled his eyebrows down. His eyes were giving his mood away over what she just told him.
"Yeah." She said, shaking her head dramatically at him.
"What did she say?" Aiden asked, watching the exchange.
"I thought you just said you two weren't together?" Ezra looked at me, frowning.
"We're not." I defended myself for the hundredth time since I sat down at this table. I didn't know why that was his business anyway. "Aiden has a girlfriend."
"Then why is Jessa telling me you like to sleep in his bed?" Everyone turned to look at me except Aiden, who covered his face with his hands holding back laughter.
My skin was flaming in embarrassment.
"Oh, it's not like that. I just stay at his house sometimes." I tried to correct his assumptions.
"I told you she was a whore." Jenna whispered just loud enough for everyone to hear.
"That's enough." Charlie slammed his fist on the table, scolding Jenna. Ezra remained silent, looking down at the table, not able to meet my eyes.
"Don't worry, Charlie, after breakfast, she'll get on her knees for you. She'll clearly take it from anyone who will give it to her." Jenna leaned in across the table and smiled at me, tapping her spindly fingers against the wood.
"Jenna, dear," Luanne said sweetly to the vicious girl trying to calm her down. "This isn't the time for this. Let's just enjoy our breakfast."
"Stay the fuck out of this, Luanne." Jenna's anger was lashing out in every direction.
"You're not going to talk to her like that!" I stood up from my chair, ready to pounce on Jenna. Aiden grabbed at my arm and I ripped it from him. If Ezra wasn't going to stand up to his fiancé to protect his mother, then I would.
Jessa began to whimper into Ezra's chest when she heard me yell. My eyes moved to the little girl who didn't understand what was going on. All she knew was her Momma was yelling and she was scared. I took a deep breath to try to calm myself down for her. None of this should have ever happened in front of Jessa. This was exactly the reason I was so nervous about all this moving too fast.
"Ry," Aiden said, placing his hand on my back. "Let's grab Jess and go home."
I nodded and got up from my chair to grab Jessa from Ezra. Ezra stood up and reluctantly tried to hand Jessa to me. Jessa cried and clung to him tightly. She would not let him go.
"No, Momma. No." Jessa cried as I tried to pull her away from him. She was fighting so hard to stay with him. It broke my heart, watching her want to be with him.
"Jessa, I promise I will come over soon and we can go play. Go with your Momma, baby." Ezra soothed her, rubbing her back and kissing her hair.
I grabbed for her again and she finally let go of him. I was relieved to have her back in my arms to get her away from this situation. Ezra rubbed her back when she snuggled into me.
"I'll give you a call soon to work out when I can see her again." Ezra said, placing his hand on my forearm sympathetically.
"You better be careful Ezra, the slut gets pregnant every time you touch her." Jenna glared where his hand was on me.
"Knock it off, Jen." Ezra warned, looking back at her.
I bit the inside of my cheek to keep quiet and glared at him. I was barely holding on between my temper and my anxiety. I needed to leave before I did something else I would regret.
I turned and walked over to Aiden to start leaving. Jessa reached for him and he grabbed her from me. It was probably a good idea for him to carry her. I was feeling unsteady on my feet.
Jenna started laughing as Aiden and I began to walk away. I had seen enough of her now to know she was not the type of person I wanted my daughter around. There was not a kind bone in her body. The act she put on at the bar was just that, an act to sniff me out so she could stomp on me.
"Ezra, you should have worn a condom after she lost the first one." Jenna said loud enough so the whole restaurant could hear.
I turned back and launched myself at the table. Ezra was still standing and was able to catch me before I clawed her eyes out. Jessa was crying in the background while he held me back from tearing the bitch apart.
"Let go of me!" I screamed at him as I watched Jenna continue to laugh at me.
Luanne reached over and smacked Jenna across the face. Jenna grabbed her cheek as a red mark spread across it. I wanted to hit the other side to give her a matching one. I was breathing too hard and the room started to blur out of focus. My chest began to tighten and I couldn't find any air. I began to wheeze and panic, still trying to fight against Ezra's hard grasp.
Aiden was frozen in place. He had Jessa in his arms and could see me struggling to hold on. He was only one person and he couldn't protect us both. I was continuing to struggle against Ezra as I watched Jenna sit like a Queen on a throne. I wanted to hurt her.
"Aiden, get Jessa out of here now." Ezra's voice commanded from behind me.
"You think I would really leave Riley here with you so you can hurt her again? You're fucking insane." Aiden barked back at him. Ezra's arms gripped me tighter as his body tensed around me.
"Fine. Switch me. You take Riley. I'll get Jessa." Ezra said, fighting against me.
"Hell no." Aiden said, squeezing Jessa tighter.
"Fuck, Aiden, this isn't the time for this. Just take Jessa to the fucking car. I'll be right behind you." Ezra commanded.
"I'm doing it for Jessa, not for you, prick." Aiden had to have the last word. He turned and carried the crying dark-haired girl out of the dining room and out the front door.
Ezra pinned my arms and started to drag me kicking and screaming away from the table.
"And I thought this was going to be a boring day." Charlie said calmly, picking up his glass of water to sip it.
"I'm going to knock your f..." Ezra's hand clamped over my mouth before I could get the threat out.
Luanne and Jenna were standing at the table, screaming in each other's faces. I fought as hard as I could against Ezra to try to get over there. Ezra was more concerned about holding onto me than to protect his Mom from the psycho balling up her fists at her.
"Want some help?" Charlie called from the table as he watched me fighting against his nephew.
"I got her." Ezra said, still covering my mouth.
My chest was rising and falling quickly and I couldn't catch my breath. I was getting lightheaded and my heart felt like it is going to explode from my chest. I was in full panic mode. I dug down deep and managed to squirm my way out of Ezra's grasp. He tried to grab me again and I pushed him back into a table. He landed hard and knocked over the drink glasses, causing the fluid to spill all over the floor.
"And now you don't." Charlie laughed at him as I took off across the dining room to get away.
"Fuck." Ezra groaned before I was out of earshot.
I ran past the manager and the server as they were coming out to see what was happening. We had made quite the scene in the little restaurant. They probably already called the cops on us.
I threw open the bathroom door and jumped in a stall locking the door behind me. I was out of my mind and didn't know what I should be doing or where I should go. The bathroom seemed like a good place to hide until I could calm myself down.
A few minutes later, I heard the door of the bathroom open. I braced myself for a fight in case Jenna had decided to follow me. I was ready to tear her apart.
