Caroline, although being one of the oldest, was the newest girl to join the coven. She'd always known that she was different. She never identified with the worldview of western civilizations. In high school she had learned about about modern day witches and the different types of magic. She settled on candle magic and worked on honing her craft. After graduation she packed her bags and began searching the country for a coven willing to let her in. However, it wasn't as easy as she thought it would be. Covens do not advertise themselves. They keep quiet in order to stay hidden from hunters. Jade was Caroline's first contact. The girls had met at a local coffee shop where Caroline was working. Jade came in everyday and ordered the same rose mocha frappe.
"Your usual?" Caroline would ask with a smirk. Already writing the order on the cup.
"Absolutely!" Jade would laugh.
Caroline looked forward to seeing Jade every morning. Jade's light brown eyes were inviting and pulled Caroline in. The girl would wait at the counter and watch as Caroline made her coffee. Jade would look away if Caroline ever looked up. She'd turn her head and push her hands through her straight brown hair. The red headed girl was star struck; utterly obsessed.
"Rose frappe!" Caroline handed Jade her coffee.
"Thank you very much!" Jade sighed, taking a sip of her drink. "Here, taste it!" Jade handed the drink back. Caroline smiled as she sampled the frappe. It tasted as if she was drinking a plant. It filled Caroline with a warmth that radiated through her body. If she she wasn't in love before, she was in love now.
"So what are you planning to do with your life?" Jade asked, leaning onto the counter.
"Um..." Caroline laughed. She had begun fixing the next costumer's drink. "If I told you I'd have to kill you."
"Ooo! Dangerous! I'm intrigued." Jade joked.
"What about you?"
"Me?" Jade paused a moment for dramatic effect. "I'm a witch." She whispered.
Caroline stood shocked. She kept waiting for Jade to laugh and say that she was just kidding.
"Are you serious?" Caroline whispered.
Jade took a sip of her coffee and slyly pulled a red crystal out of her coat pocket. Caroline started to smiled and took the crystal from the girl's hand.
"Jade Sanchez ... are you trying to enchant me?" Caroline asked sarcastically.
Jaded looked into her coffee acting as if she had to think on the question.
"Purhapse?"
"It's working." Caroline shrugged, pocketing the crystal, before handing the waiting customer his latte.
"Um, that's good. Amazing actually!" Jade smiled. "But I kinda need that crystal back."
"Oh sorry." Caroline blushed, handing the red stone back over the counter.
"My specialty is crystals but the ones I use belong to my coven leader." Jade explained.
"Oh sweet!" Caroline was intrigued. Jade was a witch and she already had connections to a coven?
"What's your specialty?" Jade asked.
"I never said that I was a witch!" Caroline asked sassily.
"You didn't have to. Enchantress energy radiates off of you." Jade scoffed.
Caroline couldn't contain the blush turing her cheeks cherry red. "Candles."
"Ooo! Candles are fun!" Jade clapped.
The two girls continued their conversation, describing their experiences with magic. They spoke until Caroline's shift ended.
"Wow! Has it really been two hours?" Jade said in astonishment.
"It has!" Caroline laughed.
"So what do you want to do now?" Jade asked as they exited the coffee shop.
"You aren't sick of me?" Caroline asked.
"It's not everyday that I meet a new witch. Last time that happened was when our coven leader brought in Meg, the youngest member of our coven. She was two when she came to live with us. Now she's twelve!" Jade scoffed.
"Well let's go for a walk! Tell me more about this coven of yours!" Caroline asked.
"Right now our coven is seperated. The older and more experienced witches are stationed in a secret location. But us younger witches are living in home just outside of town. I live with my coven leader is named Rose and she is in charge of taking care of us. She helps us to learn and perfect our specialties."
"Who is 'us'?" Caroline inquired.
"Me, Grace who is seventeen, Yara who is fifteen, and Meg."
"Wow that's kind of a small group!"
"Yeah we're trying to build our numbers up." Jade informed her. "Wanna join?" The dark haired girl joked.
"Honestly yes I do!" Caroline laughed.
Jade stepped in front of the taller girl. "Really?!" She asked in wonder.
"Really!" Caroline smiled. "I've been searching for a coven to join."
"Okay well come on! I'm taking you home with me!" Jade took Caroline's pale hand and lead her down the street.
The house was astonishing. An old three story victorian home. The outside was paneled in off white painted wood. The roof was made of pure black shingles. The bottom of the house was wrapped in an uninterrupted porch adorned with rocking chairs.
"Cool isn't it?" Jade sighed.
"It's creepy but I love it!" Caroline laughed.
"Come on!" Jade led her new friend up the stairs and into the house. "Rose is going to love you!"

Caroline smiled at the memory. She could almost taste the rose once more. She had been sitting alone in the common room for almost an hour. She could hear her witch sisters upstairs preparing for bed. Caroline thought that maybe she should join them. The blue magic was rising to the high ceiling revealing the heavier feeling of Jade's spirit. Caroline stood up and walked slowly to the door, looking around the room as she left.
"Goodnight love." Caroline closed her eyes and walked away.
