The 1990s till now
More female African American musicians became popular in the 1990s following the success of Janet Jackson, who was Michael Jackson's younger sister and Whitney Houston. There was a girl band called TLC. They released their first album "Ooooooohhh... On the TLC Tip" in 1992. Their album sold six million copies. In 1992 another artist, Mary J. Blige released her first album, What's the 411?. Many people named her the "Queen of Hip Hop Soul" because her album was combined with hip hop and soul. Billboard even ranked her as the most successful female R&B artist of the last 25 years. She still makes great music today. In 1997, after changing their name a year back, Destiny's Child became well known from their single "No, No, No". In 1999, their single "Say My Name" reached number one and later won three Grammy Awards. In the 2000s, the group continued to be more successful. Many more artists who were not female such as Boyz II Men and OutKast became successful as well as many more. As of today, many African American artists continue to shape and influence people all over the world.
