00.4 The game
Ep 2 ・❥・ second chance at first line

Harper couldn't wrap her head around why so many people would come to watch a lacrosse game. From her little experience with the sport, she concluded it to be incredibly boring and dull.
If she had it her way, she would either be trying to find a way to get Selene back. Even if she was just brought into questioning and not actually being arrested, the only thing on Harper's mind was focused on how she could get Selene out of there as quickly as possible.
She just couldn't shake the image of Selene's emerald eyes honed in on her as she sat in the back of a cop car. Harper had to find a way to distract herself so she didn't completely lose her mind and right now, that meant making sure Scott didn't shift during his game.
Looking back at it, Harper thought that she should've done more when she saw Scott a few hours ago, do more to stop him from playing in the game. Selene's words of reassurance infiltrated her mind. Even if Selene wasn't physically there, she was always guiding Harper, always reminding her to do the right thing.
"Harper?" Lydia called, tossing her strawberry blonde hair so that it lay on her shoulders, "are you coming?" Harper quickly shook herself out of her daze and caught up with Martin's girl, muttering a small sorry once she did.
It seemed like there were thousands of people in the stands. They watched as both teams warmed up on the sidelines and as the coaches delivered pep talks.
That's when Harper spotted an all too familiar face. Scott McCall, and it seemed like Lydia was heading straight for him. Once she got close enough she pulled him towards her by his jersey. Harper stood off to the side, letting it all play out. "Scott, I just want you to remember one thing for tonight."
"Uh, winning isn't everything?" Scott replied, his eyebrows pinched together in confusion. Lydia let out a chuckle as she dusted off his shoulder pads.
"Nobody likes a loser." She corrected before leaving him to simmer in his uncertainty of what just happened. Harper was about to go off with her until Scott stopped her. This time knowing better than to even lay a finger on her.
"Harper, you're here," Scott said, his tone was a blend of surprise and hesitation. Harper let out an exasperated sigh as she waited for him to continue. "Right, um. Allison, she's here, with her Dad." He finally managed to say.
Harper knew Allison was an Argent and to tread carefully around her but Scott's hesitation led her to believe that there was something he was yet to tell her. "I mean, is that supposed to be a revolutionary statement?" Harper mused.
"No, It's just–" Scott began, peering into the distance his eyes scanning the bleachers, "Her Dad, he's the guy that tried to kill me in the forest. He's a hunter."
Harper didn't know how to react. She didn't have her daggers to protect herself and even worse, she didn't have Selene by her side. She prayed that she was quick enough on her feet and was silent enough for the hunters not to even know she was there. But who knows?
Instead of dwelling in her panic, she plastered on a brave face, "Well then, maybe you should be reminding yourself of that. If you shift on the field your girlfriend's dad won't hesitate to kill you." Harper gave him a faux smile as she made her way over to Lydia, who was already waving her over.
Beside her sat Allison and her father. Harper hated to admit but, but Scott was right. She was glaring into the eyes of the man with the crossbow, the man she suspected to be the leader of his group, and all she could was pray he didn't recognise her.
As she climbed up the steps, Harper could feel a set of eyes burning into the back of her head. She briefly looked over her shoulder, and as if the two were magnets, Stiles and Harper's eyes connected only for a split second before they both looked away.
Harper brushed it off, he was probably looking at something else. She continued to weave her way through people who were also climbing up the bleachers till she finally stood beside Lydia, trying to keep as much distance away from the Argents as possible.
"Hey, I'm Allison. I heard you're new to Beacon Hills too." Allison grinned from ear to ear, leaning over slightly so she could talk to Harper properly.
"Yeah, I am." Harper confirmed, trying her hardest to muster up a smile just as friendly as hers, "I'm Harper, it's nice to meet you." Their miscellaneous small talk continued till the sharp sound of the whistle signalled the beginning of the game. All the players scattered around the field, their sticks high up in the air as they tried to catch the ball.
Blinding bright lights from above beamed down onto the pitch as all the players desperately tried to win the first point for their team. Harper watched as Scott ran for the ball only to tragically end up tumbling to the ground. The crowds didn't even have enough time to cringe since Jackson took the opportunity and won the first point with seemingly flawless ease.
"That's it, Jackson! Get fired up!" Coach called from the sidelines.
Harper reluctantly rose to her feet but didn't clap. Whilst Lydia was getting her ready for the game, by doing her make-up and hair and even picking her out a new outfit she talked about Jackson. Whether or not it was the Martin girl's intention, it just showed Harper how much of an asshole he was, and she wasn't going to stand there and applaud him.
"Wanna help me and Allison hold the sign?" Lydia questioned.
"Let Allison do it. You already know I'm not keen on these games." Harper replied, trying to decline the offer as nicely as possible. Lydia then swiftly turned over to Allison who happily agreed to parade the sign that read, 'We luv you Jackson!'
Scott shook his head when he saw Allison cheering with the sign in her hands before storming off angrily. The crowds slowly began to settle and sit back down, and the players reset their positions. Scott's head hung low, and that was never a good sign. At least it definitely wasn't the last time.
"Which one is Scott again?" Alison's father asked. Harper felt her body tense up at just the mere sound of his voice. So far, she didn't think the Argent recognised her, and she prayed it would stay like that.
"Number 11. Otherwise known as the only one who hasn't caught a single ball the entire game." Lydia answered passive-aggressively.
"I hope he's okay." Allison chimed in worriedly, her eyes locked on Scott as they had been the entire game.
"I hope we're okay." Lydia commented, her eyes however weren't even fixed on Jackson and instead the scoreboard, that showed Beacon Hills was losing. "we need to win this." The Martin girl stood up and once again held up her sign beckoning Allison, who was much more reluctant this time around to join her.
This only seemed to anger Scott even more and as the game went on Scott just continued to even out the score. Combined with the direct orders from the coach to pass to MacCall, Scott was simply unstoppable.
Harper didn't share the same enthusiasm as most of the crowd. She could see Scott losing himself, and she couldn't do anything to stop it. She kept stealing weary glances at the hunter. And when the last round was in play, it was Scott's breaking point.
He hesitated at the goal with only a few seconds left. Harper heard Allison whispering encouragement and noticed Lydia sitting at the edge of her seat watching the game through narrowed eyes. A few short seconds, that felt like decades, passed before Scott threw the ball into the net and scored the winning goal, causing the crowd to erupt in cheers and some to race down onto the pitch.
Lydia linked arms with Harper and flew down the flight of stairs to congratulate Jackson with a pearly white smile. Allison wasn't far behind them, she too ran down the flight of stairs in an attempt to find Scott.
The Martin girl finally found Jackson, who embraced her in a hug leaving Harper to shift around awkwardly. The bleachers were completely empty, and the only person still sat down was Stiles. For some reason that Harper was unaware of, her dark brown eyes kept finding a way to his.
The both of them shared brief glances. Their eyes faltered after only a second, only to repeat the process again and Harper was beginning to think he had a staring problem.
The cycle only ended when Stiles looked over at a man who Harper remembered to be the Sheriff, talking on the phone. His face was twisted into a frown as he held a finger up signalling for Stiles to wait.
Harper shook herself out of her trance-like state and shifted her attention back onto the couple in front of her. Jackson had his arm slung over Lydia's shoulders as he wore a smug, prideful smirk. "What did you think of your first Beacon Hills game?" He questioned.
Before Harper could answer his question she was caught off guard by both of their bewildered expressions. She glanced over her shoulder, following their eye-line only to see Stiles stumbling over his own two feet and undeniably making his way over to her.
"Do you know him?" Lydia asked, twirling a piece of her shiny hair as she eyed Stiles, who was only getting closer. Harper hesitated for a moment, turning back to face Jackson and the Martin girl.
"Something like that," Harper responded and just as she did, a breathless Stiles stood beside her looking between the dark-haired girl, Jackson and Lydia. It was all painstakingly awkward.
"Can I talk to you for a second? Yes. Okay. Let's go." Stiles spluttered before ushering Harper away, not giving her a choice in the matter. She instantly shrugged him off her once they got an earshot's distance away from Lydia and Jackson.
"Touch me again and I'll break every bone in your body," Harper seethed, "this better be good."
"Where is Scott?" Stiles questioned or more like pointed out his absence than actually asking her. Harper shook her head, silently cursing Scott as she connected the dots in her head. Allison was nowhere to be found either.
"Shit," Harper muttered under her breath before the both of them sprang into action and ran back into the school and she was beginning to have an immense case of Deja Vu. Stiles and Harper raced down the eerie hallways in the hope of finding Allison and Scott.
It was oddly quiet, she expected to hear some sort of commotion but it was all so incredibly still and silent."Where are we even going?" Harper asked, looking back to see Stiles barely lagging behind her.
He tried to answer whilst simultaneously trying to catch his breath. It wasn't a good combination since his words only came out as wheezes and completely unhelpful. Stiles then finally gave up on trying to speak and just signalled to take a left.
"How on earth are you on the lacrosse team?" Harper muttered under her breath before the both of them continued to run until they reached the boy's locker room.
Harper expected to find a similar scene to what she found last time but instead ended up walking in on Allison and Scott shamelessly making out. Stiles and Harper concealed themselves behind lockers, waiting for the ordeal to be over. Allison finally pulled away, telling Scott she should probably get back to her Dad, then gave him another quick kiss.
Harper and Stiles had no time to even think of an excuse or on what to do before she spotted them and gave them both a warm greeting as she left, "Hey Harper, Stiles."
"uh, hey." Stiles returned whilst Harper just gave Allison a small smile. Once she was gone, both Stiles and Harper fully emerged from their hiding spot, dropped their grins and stalking over to Scott.
"I kissed her," Scott stated, a foolish, smitten smile plastered on his face. He looked like a love-sick puppy.
"We saw," Stiles replied.
"She kissed me."
"We saw that too," Harper added, finding his reaction to it all somewhat funny in a wholesome way.
"Feels pretty good huh?" Stiles noted causing Scott to just let out a sigh that said more than words ever could.
"I don't know how, but I controlled it I pulled it back." The shaggy-haired boy stammered, "Maybe I can do this, maybe it's not that bad." Harper wanted to tell him that just shifting on the field or quite frankly anywhere was bad enough but decided against ruining his bliss.
"Yeah" Stiles nodded letting out a sigh, "then, I'll just talk to you later." He concluded, trying to walk away. He only got a few steps in when Scott grabbed him by the jersey and pulled him back.
"What?" He questioned, sensing something was wrong. The buzz-cut boy paused for a moment, his chestnut eyes darted between both Scott and Harper, who waited for Stiles to elaborate.
"The uh, medical examiner looked at the other half of the body we found" he began, "and I'll just keep it simple. Medical examiner determines killer to be animal, not human. Derek is human, not animal. Derek not a killer. Derek let out of jail."
Whilst Scott's eyes widened in shock and terror, Harper felt her body relax for the first time since this morning. If Derek was let out of jail that meant Selene was also back, and just knowing that allowed Harper to be at ease.
"Why do you not care that a literal murderer is on the loose?" Stiles questioned and it was just then that Harper realized both Scott and Stiles were looking at her with a puzzled expression at her lack of surprise.
"Maybe it's because you idiots got Selene in cuffs as well as Derek" Harper quipped back almost immediately, "now, I only came here to make sure Scott wasn't brutally murdering his girlfriend, so if that's it, I'm gonna head out," Harper said, pointing behind her.
She then turned on her heel and began to try to head out, but the second she was about to put one foot in front of the other and walk away from all the mess, she heard a voice beckoning her back, "Wait!" Harper shut her eyes, the frustration coursing through her. She just wanted to go and find Selene, but Stiles and Scott were making that simple task much harder.
She stood with her back turned until she eventually turned back around. Scott seemed to shrink under Harper's cold gaze and smacked Stiles on the arm, leading her to believe that buzzcut boy was the one to call her back.
"What now?" Harper asked, the annoyance dripping from each of her words. Stiles pressed his lips into a thin line as he briefly glanced over to Scott before he looked back at her.
"My dad ID'd the dead girl, both halves. Her name was Laura Hale." Stiles finally spat out. If all of today's events didn't already throw Harper off her balance and drag her through emotional turmoil, this was definitely the cherry on top.
Harper didn't know what to think. Her thoughts were all jumbled and blurry, probably from the lack of sleep and all the stress. Therefore, it was no surprise she couldn't make her mind up about wether or not she believed that Derek killed the girl in the woods, who she now knew as Laura Hale.
"Hale?" Scott blurted out, and Harper could've sworn it looked as though his eyes were about to pop out of his head.
Stiles nodded, "Dereks sister." The three of them fell quiet. The only thing filling the deafeningly loud silence was the wind whistling by. For Harper, it was her own thoughts that were screaming the loudest. Lately, she had no idea what was going on.
"Do you know anything about this?" Scott turned to her. She contemplated on telling them the truth but would telling them she was just as clueless as them both do more good than harm? As she began to come to a conclusion Harper felt a hand on her shoulder.
Startled, she looked behind her only to be greeted by Selene looking right down at her, a soft smile on her pink lips. "Let's go, Harps." She said, shooting Stiles and Scott an unreadable glare before leading Harper out of the locker room.

After Selene and Harper had their warm embrace and briefly caught up with each other just outside the school, they saw Derek emerge from the entrance doors. Seeing him walking over to them made Harper remember that she wanted answers. That she didn't just want to be kept in the dark anymore.
Selene most likely sensing the younger girls yearning for information, let out a small sigh as Derek drew nearer and braced herself to tell Harper everything.
"Let's go my car is this way," Derek said as he passed by, barely even looking up at Selene and Harper. Until, the older girl grabbed his forearm, stopping him from going any closer and forcing him to meet her unwavering gaze.
"We can't just ignore this," Selene whispered, obviously not quietly enough because Harper heard it clear as day. His eyes travelled over at her as she stood with her arms folded before they retreated back to Selene.
As if they came to a silent mutual agreement, Selene let go of Derek's arm as the both of them faced Harper who simply questioned, "Can someone please tell me what's going on? I would really appreciate it if I didn't have to get my information from Stiles and Scott."
"You won't, not anymore. I'm sorry Harps, I was going to try to explain it all but then the cops showed up and-" Selene began to explain and Derek just rolled his eyes.
"You're not only in Beacon Hills to help Scott." He cut in, putting a stop to what would have been Selene's hour-long apology and rambling till she got to the point.
Harper furrowed her eyebrows together, her lips pursed, "what?" She asked, confused at Derek's blunt statement that didn't give her much to go on. He looked over at Selene, who gave him a small nod and he began explaining everything in greater detail.
"First of all, if you think I killed my sister. I didn't. I wasn't even in Beacon Hills when she was murdered, I came here looking for her." Derek plainly stated. Selene seemed to almost wince at his words and Harper suddenly felt bad for thinking he ever did.
"And, I asked Selene and you to come to Beacon Hills not only to help Scott but to also find the alpha that turned him." It all began to click for Harper. She had brushed it off the night she encountered the hunters. When Scott was yelling that Derek turned him, that 'he did this to him' the thought of the alpha only crossed her mind briefly.
"Why on earth do you need to look for the alpha?" Harper shot back, sounding more fearful than she would've hoped. It was quite clear that her history with alphas was far from good and even the thought of one, whose identity was completely unknown, shook her to her core.
"He killed my sister." Derek once again answered with seemingly little to no emotion behind his words. Harper would've given him some type of pushback, asked him how he knew that for certain, or why he didn't seem to care, but the man had just lost his sister and she wasn't that cruel.
"How are we supposed to help you with finding an alpha? Maybe Selene could but you do know I don't use my powers right" Harper informed him hesitantly.
"Well aware Harper but that doesn't mean you're useless to me." Derek shrugged as he turned away and walked to his car.
