[03] FEEDING TIME
Standing next to Carlton Drake, a clipboard held tightly in her grasp was Doctor Dora Skirth, who was arguably the best scientist on Carlton's team. Adjusting her glasses, Dora squinted her eyes, writing down each and every one of Brina's movements.
The Life Foundation had always had amazing test subjects and samples, but this had to be the most impressive thing Life had ever accomplished. Catching an unknown species which resided in the waters of this very planet was quite remarkable in Dora's mind.
Turning her head, Dora looked to Carlton who stood with his hands in the pockets of his trousers and his eyes focused on the siren. Currently, the siren was tracing her fingers along the ridges of the bed.
Carlton rocked on the balls of his feet, mind reeling in complete and utter amazement. He truly could not believe this was happening, standing in front of him, just a few feet away was the creature he had been after all his life. The creature of lore and legends, myths and stories, and Carlton had been the one to catch her.
She was his, and he would be damned if she ever got away.
She provided too much information, too many possibilities, the answer to so many unanswered questions rested in the palm of her hand. So much knowledge they could gain with the subject.
Clearing her throat, Dora gained his attention, Carlton turning his head to her.
"Do you think the subject has a name, Mr. Drake?" Her voice was quiet but loud to the ears of Carlton.
Behind them, scientists bustled around, everyone excited about the newest subject. Quinton Callahan continuously spared glances toward the containment room, watching for anything even remotely interesting that the siren would do.
However, Brina was only feeling up the room, seemingly taking everything in and getting used to walking on her feet.
Carlton furrowed his eyebrows at Dora's question, a frown forming on his lips. "Of course, she has a name, Doctor Skirth. Despite how it may currently look, we have reason to believe that these creatures are extremely intelligent. So yes, I am sure she has a name, the question is how do we get her to tell us her name?" Carlton Drake explained, his words holding a powerful grasp on Dora Skirth.
Dora was easily influenced by Carlton, believing that he truly was a brilliant man, capable of saving this planet. Carlton knew how to use his words to his advantage, making almost everything he said sound like a hymn straight out of the bible. Not to mention that Carlton, when he wanted, gave people a trusting aura, making them all fall right into the palm of his hand.
If only they knew of the madness that lurked beneath.
Dora quickly nodded at Carlton, looking away from her boss in a hurry, a light blush on her cheeks. She was embarrassed she had asked such a question, of course, the fish-lady had a name. They just did not know what it was.
'Stupid, stupid, stupid!' Dora mentally chided herself.
Sighing, Carlton clasped his hands together. "You asked a fair question, Dora." Doctor Skirth looked up at the sound of her first name being said. Carlton only referred to them by their first names if he wanted something or he was apologetic. In this case, it seemed he was apologetic. "I apologize for being so blunt, but I am very passionate about this. This experiment is going to change history no matter what, and we only have one chance to get it right."
Carlton, somewhere in the midst of his small speech, had placed his hand on Doctor Skirth's shoulder, his eyes boring into hers holding nothing but hope and promise. Slowly, his lips quirked up into a small smile, one that screamed trustworthiness, and like everyone else, Dora Skirth fell straight into his trap.
Quinton Callahan watched the scene from his place at his laptop, his brow raised in suspicion. Doctor Callahan was the only person who truly understood who Carlton Drake really was. However, despite this information, Quinton did like the guy's company. He was polite enough and he paid extremely well, so in his mind, as long as he was not on the hurting end, he was okay with Carlton Drake.
Nodding his head, Carlton released Dora's shoulder, bringing his attention back to the siren wandering around her room.
Brina's feet were sensitive to the soft carpet under her toes, her thoughts spinning wildly. This surely was an interesting place, but Brina still was not too positive about it. It was a better outcome than what she thought was going to happen back when she was cornered on the boat, going through her transformation by herself.
Brina was happy that she had been asleep for the worst of her transformation, knowing that had she been awake, the pain would have been traumatizing. Especially alone in whatever contraption it was that they transported her in.
Though, here in this comfy little room, Brina could not help but feel protected. Before in the ocean it was basically killed or be killed, the hunter or the hunted, there was no mercy in the rough waters. But here, she was safe, in a place where no sharks or killer whales could try and eat her.
Unfortunately, her sister was not as lucky. Brina had no clue what had happened to her beloved sister after her capture but she prayed it was not too bad. Perhaps, Nadia went back to the council of sirens to report of her capture.
Of course, they would not do anything to try and save her, only use her as an example for others to not swim so close to the surface. It was nothing personal, but what was the council to do against all the humans in the world? Nothing, that was for sure.
At the end of the day, Brina did miss her sister, but she also knew Nadia was strong. While Brina excelled in speed, Nadia always was the dominant one in strength.
All sirens were faster, stronger, and had all around better senses than humans. So, despite Brina being weaker than Nadia, she was still able to take on one of Carlton Drake's best security men with a good chance at winning.
"Hello, excuse me!" Brina heard the familiar voice of the handsome human in the dark suit.
In Brina's mind, Carlton Drake was the best looking out of all of them. With his copper skin and glaring brown eyes, Brina thought this had to be the most perfect looking human she had ever seen. And do not even get her started on his hair, the locks which looked so fluffy, she wished to simply run her new soft hands through it.
Brina did not realize Carlton was talking to her, thinking he was still talking to the woman with glasses standing next to him.
It was only as she was standing in the doorway of the bathroom, analyzing the toilet trying to decide what it did was when she heard a short knocking on the glass. Whipping around, Brina's startling blue eyes met with Carlton Drake's.
Carlton stood, his hand resting on the glass.
In a wary manner, Brina walked forward, feeling as if something were physically tugging her toward him. Stopping just in front of the glass, learning her lesson from hitting it last time, Brina watched kept her gaze on Carlton, his words going over her head.
"Hello, little siren. Will you please tell me your name?" Carlton's voice was gentle and sweet, as if not to startle her.
For Brina, Carlton's words went right over her head. She understood nothing of what he was saying, all she knew was his voice made tingles race through her body like never before. Tilting her head, Brina's blue eyes raked over Carlton once again.
'Such odd attire', Brina thought to herself, feeling the sensation of amusement running through her veins. 'But good looking attire, good looking male human.'
Her thoughts were jumbled in contrast to humans, but they made perfect sense to her. Carlton swallowed at her look, glancing behind him only to Callahan giving him a thumbs up.
"Nice one, Mr. Drake! You really reeled her in!" Quinton slapped his thighs with a loud laugh, Carlton rolling his eyes at the scientist.
Quinton Callahan was the only person who was not so threatened by him. Carlton knew he respected him, but he also knew that he was more fearless than others. He suspected it was the Scottish in him.
Despite the idiotic comments, Carlton could not help but find it amusing. It was a nice change from the normal stuffy scientists that surrounded him. Yes, Quinton and Dora were both Carlton's favorites, and that was a known fact. Both of them got more vacation time, more money, and more leeway.
Rolling his eyes, Carlton turned away from Quinton, clashing with Brina's gaze. Sighing in defeat, Carlton accepted the fact that Brina truly had no clue what he was saying and that if he wanted to communicate with her, he was going to need to find some way to teach her English.
"Okay, so you have no clue what I am saying." He said it out loud, taking more time to look at Brina.
Brina only sniffed the air in response, trying to catch a whiff of his scent. Alas, she was only met with the clear air of her containment room. Snorting, trying to push the air out of her lungs, Brina turned, walking away from the glass. Carlton watched her leave with disappointment, wishing there was some way he was able to keep her attention for a longer period of time.
Suddenly, an idea peaked at the recess of his mind. "Get her food!" Carlton shouted, one of the scientists quickly grabbing the plate of mash potatoes and meatloaf.
Scurrying forward, the scientist crouched in front of the metal door, sliding open a small compartment at the very bottom. Pushing the food inside, the compartment opening snapped shut, the plate of cold mash potatoes and meatloaf sitting just by the door.
Brina frowned as she caught a new scent, turning toward the plate of food. In her opinion, it smelled absolutely disgusting, outright barbaric. What was that mushy stuff or the hard looking brown chunk of meat? Was this actually what humans ate?
Carlton took immediate notice of the disgruntled look on his siren's face, the CEO looking at the plate of food, already able to see how cold it was. Was he surrounded by idiots, why the hell would they serve a sea creature cold mashed potatoes and meatloaf? Carlton could already see how wrong this was about to go.
Clenching his fists, he furiously turned toward his team, pointing an accusing finger at the food.
"Who the hell was in charge of the food?" He growled, annoyance seeping through every word. "Was it you, Emerson?" Carlton already knew it was Emerson by the look of guilt on the male's face.
'Idiot,' Carlton thought to himself, turning away from them with an annoyed huff.
He would let this one slide for now, but next time he would not be so kind. From his place, Emerson sighed in relief, one of his co-workers giving him a sympathetic pat on the back.
Taking steps forward, Brina's nose crinkled as she got closer to the stinky smelling food. Where was the fish, or the shrimp, or even the goddamn clams? Brina already missed the familiar salty smell of fish, just the thought of it had her mouth watering.
She imagined hunting with her sister through the waters, ripping her teeth into the slimy sea animals. Brina did not realize how hungry she was until she thought of the delicious fish she usually caught or the squid that she and her sister would manage to take down with others on occasion.
Squid was a special, the hunt for one taking at least five different sirens. When they could, Brina and Nadia would join a hunt, all of the sirens fighting viciously to kill as big of a squid as they could find, and enjoying their meal after it was taken down.
Leaning down, Brina got a closer look at the food, a squeamish feeling starting at the pit of her stomach. She would not eat this vile meal!
In anger that was powered by her now raging hunger, Brina looked at the group of scientists congregated by the glass. They were all anticipating what was going to happen next. Quinton Callahan flinched at the wild look in her eye, comparing it to how a bear looks when they are hungry.
"This is not going to end well," Callahan stated, Carlton sighing while rubbing his hand down his face.
"If Emerson had a brain and got seafood instead of whatever the hell that is, then this would not be happening, isn't that right, Emerson?" Carlton snarked, Emerson, giving a shaky nod in reply, not wanting to further anger his boss.
With an animalistic growl, Brina grabbed the tray, launching it at the glass as hard as she could. Everyone on the other side instinctively flinched back, the tray hitting the glass with a loud bang before it bounced off and fell to the floor in a mess.
"Jesus Christ, look at her teeth!" One of the scientists cried, pointing toward Brina.
It was true, the natural incisors that were Brina's teeth had grown from her hunger. Brina feeling her normal teeth back nearly smiled, this was how normal felt for her. Though, she did admit she missed all the room in her mouth without the huge teeth.
Carlton's eyes grew as did his excitement. "Incredible," He whispered, eyeing the teeth with fascination. "It must be from her hunger..." He mumbled toward Doctor Skirth who nodded, writing down what he said. "Emerson, I don't trust you with her food anymore! Doctor Linkin, go get me the biggest fish we have!" Carlton yelled, Linkin wasting no time in running out of the room, puffing air as she went.
She was back in a matter of minutes, holding a large plate with three entire catfish piled on top of each other. Unfortunately, the kitchen only had catfish, so Doctor Linkin brought down three to make up for the loss in size.
"Sir, I got them as quick as I could," She groaned, heaving air, the catfish were heavier than they seemed.
"Good job, Linkin." Carlton praised, patting his newest scientist on the back, taking the plate from her.
Deciding that he wanted to be the one to pass the plate under the compartment this time, Carlton quickly shoved the plate through the small space, the door of the compartment closing right after.
The second Brina smelled the familiar fishy smell, her eyes had zeroed in on the catfish. Lunging forward, Brina ripped into the fish, her teeth cutting through the flesh and bone as if it were mere cake.
"Well, at least we know what to feed her," Doctor Skirth said, Carlton nodding as she wrote down what Brina ate. "Now, if only we could figure out her name."
"Well, until that happens, C54 will need to suffice as her title." Quinton walked over, standing in the middle of Dora and Carlton.
Carlton glanced at him, sighing knowing he was right. "Just until we can get a name, if we can't get one then I'll name her myself," Carlton promised, his mind reeling with different names that sounded like they could fit her as he watched her eat.
The second Brina was finished, she wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. Looking at the glass, Brina once again met eyes with Carlton, her mind puzzled as she tried to figure out why the humans continued to watch her. She was not that interesting.
Upon thinking to herself, Brina frowned when a familiar feeling came. A small feeling of discomfort in her abdomen, her bladder was full. There was a reason some people called the ocean a big toilet, and they weren't lying. Animals that lived in the sea urinated in the sea.
Because of this, it was normal for Brina to release herself whenever. She was not aware that releasing yourself in front of people, let alone on yourself was not normal. So, as Brina walked the length of the containment room, the built-up pressure of her bladder left her in seconds.
"Uhm, Mr. Drake, she's..." Callahan trailed off, scratching behind his head not sure what to do.
Carlton sighed, holding up a hand, stopping Callahan mid-sentence. "I know what she's doing, I can see." It was quiet as they watched the siren pee herself, showing no indication that she even realized what she was doing.
Brina frowned when relieving herself, the sensation of a sticky wet-hot mess all over her legs taking over. Looking down, Brina tilted her head at the huge and fast-spreading wet spot on her sweatpants. This had never happened before, why was it happening now?
"Hmm, potty-training a siren, that shouldn't be too hard." Callahan crossed his arms, Carlton holding up a single hand.
"I really don't appreciate the sarcasm, Doctor Callahan," Carlton said, watching as the siren looked down at herself in confusion.
Of course, if she did not even know how to speak, why would she know to use the bathroom in the toilet? But that formed another issue, how were they so suppose to teach her without communicating? And they couldn't just leave her wet and her containment room a mess like that. Pee and food were all over the carpet now. However, he doubted she would let any of them get close enough for her to get cleaned off.
"Call the sniper in here," Carlton did not like it, but he had to do it. "We need to sedate her to clean her and the room up. Oh, and if anyone has any suggestions on how to teach her, now would be the time to step forward."
Immediately, only one person raised their hand. Raising his brows, Carlton looked to Doctor Skirth expectantly.
"I might have an idea," Dora said shyly, her mind churning, knowing exactly how to not only potty-train the siren but also possibly teach her English.
