29. 》Sudden Interest 《
Fury led Kara to a room filled with filing cabinets, drawers, boxes and the like. In the center, an office desk stood still, with a swiveling chair behind it. Stacks of folders were placed quite messily on it, all stamped "CONFIDENTIAL".
The director proceeded to his chair, sitting down and intertwining his hands on the desk.
Classic boss gesture.
"Take a seat.", he finally spoke, pointing to another chair not far by. Kara nodded and did as she was told.
"I'm so sorry for bumping into you earlier. I didn't mean-" She was silenced by Fury putting his index finger over his lips.
"You talk too much."
"And you talk too little. It's kind of weird.", Kara interjected, slightly squinting her eyes at the man in front of her. She took this moment to analyze his features, and as she did so, she observed that Fury's wounds and bruises were gone.
"How come you're all healed up so fast?", Kara inquired, studying him. Fury tilted his head upwards. "I'm the one asking questions here. First of all, I'd like to know how you escaped Strucker's facility.", Fury stated, leaning back.
Kara avoided his gaze. "He sent me off to do some more of his dirty work. I took it as an opportunity to get away from him.", she answered.
Nick hummed in response. "I see. Tell me more about this dirty work that he made you do."
Kara furrowed her eyebrows. "I already told you, didn't I? He made me kidnap people for his crazy experiments."
"Who decides the people to take in for his experiments: you or him?", Nick pushed, cocking an eyebrow. Kara could sense the indifference in his tone.
"He does. I just follow his orders.", she replied. "Oh, so you're his pet?"
Kara's jaw clenched, and her fists balled up. "That is the one thing I'm not: somebody's pet."
"Why did you do it then?", the director insisted, his eyes boring into her own. Kara sighed in defeat.
"I... I don't know. I guess I gave in to my own hatred.", she admitted, bowing her head down in shame.
Nick hummed. "Did you make any acquaintances while you were there?"
The lady before him looked to be in deep thought. A few seconds later, a light bulb ticked in her hand. She gave him a soft smile. "Yeah, her name was Blair. She was a fellow subject. I think she was one of the few people I could call a friend."
As Kara fixed her gaze at Fury, she could see the subtle twitch in his left eye and the clenching of his jaw.
"Why did you leave her behind then?", he inquired further.
"Why are you asking me these questions-"
"I asked you, why did you leave her behind-"
"Stop it.", she muttered, covering her ears.
'"ANSWER THE DAMN QUESTION, KARA!"
"YOU WOULDN'T UNDERSTAND, OKAY?!", she yelled, standing up and slamming her fists into Fury's desk. Tears were brimming her eyes, but she wasn't going to show vulnerability in front of this man.
"I HAD MY REASONS. REASONS WHICH I'D LIKE TO KEEP TO MYSELF."
Nick, on the other hand, remained as stoic as ever. "Get your hands off my desk." Kara glared daggers his way, but complied.
"If I may, I'd like to leave now." Fury didn't respond, staring her down with intensity. After a few minutes of eerie silence, he gestured towards the door.
Kara rolled her eyes and opened the door wide, not bothering to close it as she exited the room. Upon doing so, she walked straight into Agent Hill, who looked like she had just seen a ghost.
"Agent Hill? What's wrong?"
"Kara, I need to talk to you. It's about the incident yesterday.", Maria stated, running out of breath. Kara looked confused as ever.
"What about it?"
"I-" "Ah, Agent Hill. Just the woman I wanted to see next.", Fury's voice boomed from the doorway. Kara took note of how Maria's shoulders stiffened at the mention of her name, and how the color drained from her face.
Maria slowly turned around to face him. "Yes, sir?"
"Come inside, will you? We have something to discuss.", Nick said, walking back into his office. Maria glanced at Kara one last time, and the latter could see that she was trying to tell her something. The agent then headed for Fury's office, shutting the door behind her.
Kara was left standing there, a puzzled expression on her face. She didn't realize she was staring at nowhere when a hand tapped her shoulder.
"Hey. Where have you been? You left me back there.", Natasha spoke, looking into her eyes. Kara snapped out of her trance and smiled at the spy.
"Oh, yeah. Sorry. Fury called me in his office. Asked me a few questions, whatnot.", she replied.
Natasha nodded. "He didn't intimidate you, did he?" The brunette recalled their conversation just a few minutes ago, and shook her head.
"Good. Now, come on. Let's get back to work."

More than a week has passed, and Kara's condition improved. She started getting better at hand-to-hand combat, thanks to her mentors. Her teammates would try some of their signature moves on her, and Kara would either dodge them or block them with little effort, impressing them in return.
Also, Tony bought her some clothes despite Kara's protests. She wanted to go back to her old apartment to grab her stuff, but Steve wouldn't allow her out of the compound, insisting that the second she leaves is the moment she's in danger. Along with clothes also came a new high-tech phone, which Tony shrugged off.
"For emergencies, you know.", he commented nonchalantly.
"Oh, my gosh. Tony, thank you so much! This is all too-"
Tony cut her off by showing her his hand. "Kid, look. I don't do this very often, but there's no need to make a big fuss about it.", he said. "Plus, don't broadcast this to the rest. I can't give everyone wardrobe expansion and phone gifts."
Kara smiled at this. "Still, thank you."
The billionaire mimicked her expression. "You're welcome."
Today was Kara's first day of training with the magic trio: Vision, Wanda and Loki. To say she was excited about it would be a lie. As days passed by, she noticed how much time the both of them spent together.
There was even one time early this week when she entered Loki's room to find Wanda sitting there beside him, whispering something in his ear. Kara coughed rather loudly, causing both of their heads to perk up in her direction.
"Yes?", Loki asked.
"Steve called for a team meeting, again. He asked me to come get you.", Kara replied, not meeting his gaze.
"All right." was his mere reply, as they resumed talking. Kara's ears were fuming.
"The f**k he thinks he is, ignoring me like that?!", she screamed internally, balling up her fists yet again.
"He wants everyone gathered, NOW.", she butted in, her voice quite stern. Loki smiled smugly at her, heeding the disdainful tone of her voice . "I heard you, Kara."
"You can make out later. Steve says it's urgent.", Kara persisted. Wanda and Loki exchanged looks. "We weren't-" Wanda was cut off by Kara shutting the door loudly.
As Kara entered the training room for her new training phase, she was met with Vision levitating a few inches from the floor. She looked around to see if anyone else was there, much to her relief. Kara tiptoed towards the android, a mischievous grin on her face. Just as she was about to scream loudly, Vision opened his eyes.
"Kara, you seem to have forgotten that I possess the Mind Stone. No one can just sneak up on me.", he said, smiling at her. Kara whined. "Dammit. So close."
Vision chuckled. "I'm simply waiting for the two to arrive. They'll be here any minute now." The smile on the lady before him fell.
Kara cleared her throat. "Vis, can I ask you something?" Vision looked up at her. "You just did."
She rolled her eyes. "You like Wanda, don't you?", she blurted out, sitting down in front of him. She caught a glimpse of his lips twitching upwards.
"Why do you ask? Am I making myself obvious?"
Kara shrugged. "I just... don't you find it weird that Wanda is with Loki most of the time?"
Vision thought about it. "Well, their magic is similar. So, for me that's understandable. Wanda's just discovering her powers, with Loki's help."
"I don't think magic is the only thing they're busy with.", she replied, rolling her eyes.
The android looked back at her. "Why the sudden interest in the pair?"
"I... I'm just curious how you're not bothered by them always being together when you just admitted to me that you're interested in Wanda.", Kara responded, cocking an eyebrow.
Vision chuckled. "You're right. I am not bothered. However, it appears that you are."
Kara's eyes widened. "I... of course not." Vision shot her a knowing glance, and smirked at her. The brunette opened her mouth to give him a snarky remark when Loki and Wanda came in.
"Ah, there they are."
Loki's eyes were immediately set on Kara, shifting from her to Vision, then landing back on her. Kara stared back, raising an eyebrow in a challenging way. Loki smirked at this, crossed his arms and leaned against the wall. Wanda approached them with that familiar grin on her face.
"Let's train, shall we? Loki, are you coming over here or what?", she said, glancing at the raven-haired god behind her. Loki fixed his eyes on Kara yet again, smiling as he caught her squinting her eyes at the witch.
"I'm coming, pet.", he replied, his tone half-teasing, half-mocking.
Kara scoffed in disbelief. She could feel her heart beating faster, and her stomach slightly sinking. "Pet? What, so they have nicknames, now?"
She whipped her head around to look at Vision, who didn't seem bothered about it at all. Was she losing her mind? Why was she troubling herself about it?
"Okay, Vision. You're up first."
