Chapter 21 | Asher
I can't believe those fuckers.
I pick up my pace, walking as fast as I can towards their house.
To send me a video like that, while I'm at work and can't do anything about it? Absolute torture. They're evil. Sick human beings. Fuck, I'm so down bad for them.
The way they looked in that video. It was incredible. Seeing Hayden all blush faced like that? Cameron pleading for more? The steam, the water, I should've been paying for that video.
Ugh, why didn't I borrow Cameron's car and drive here?
I round the corner and finally come up to their driveaway.
Today was the longest day at work and it was all because of them. I feel like a new chapter of my life has been unlocked and all I want to do is explore it.
I couldn't get to the front door fast enough.
Immediately as I step inside, I'm hit in the face with the smell of home cooking. Pasta sauce?
"You're telling me that it was better than the first? There's no way." Hayden's voice rings from the kitchen.
"I'm not just telling you, I'll prove it. I'm not scared." Cameron's voice follows.
I step inside and round the corner to see both of their backs turned to me hovering over the stove. Hayden is stirring something in a huge pot and Cameron is standing beside him, watching closely over his shoulder while eating a Twizzler.
I take a moment to just stare at them in awe as I drop my tote bag from my shoulder on to the ground.
"I'd like to see you try."
"Asher and I will take you down."
"What are we arguing about?" I ask, stepping deeper into the kitchen. Both of them turn to look at me, Cameron, with the brightest smile on his face and Hayden who smiles softly at me.
"Which one is better, FarCry 4 or 5?"
I scoff. "4, of course."
Cameron hits Hayden on the arm with the back of his hand. "See? Told ya."
Hayden turns back around to his pot and shakes his head. "You're dead to me." He mutters, continuing to stir.
"You two just...cooking dinner? Together? After sending me a video like that?" I breathe, sitting down on the stool.
Cameron laughs, folding his arms on the island and looks at me. "We got hungry." He shrugs.
The fact that they're just going on with their day like that wasn't the most intimate thing they've probably ever done with each other.
I squint my eyes. "You know how difficult it was to focus after seeing that? I hate you two." I shake my head.
"Are you saying you didn't like it?" Cameron's smile falters, his eyes darting all over my face. I see Hayden peak over his shoulder, waiting for my answer.
I smile. "That video was the hottest video I've ever seen in my life." I sit up on my chair so I can lean across the island. I press my lips to Cameron's which I can tell shocks him at first, but he quickly melts into my touch, kissing me back deeply. It just feels right. As though we should've been doing this a long time ago.
His tongue tangles with mine but before we get too heated, I pull back and smile. "And you're making me dinner? Someone pinch me."
"Hayden picks up a spoon from the counter next to him and dips it into the pot. He strolls over to me and without word, lifts the spoon of pasta sauce and I open my mouth instantly as he slips it in. Fuck, I'd do just about anything this guy says, wouldn't I?
I taste the sauce and close my eyes. It tastes absolutely perfect. Full of meat and warm spices. Right before I say that outloud, he connects his lips with mine.
Holy fuck, I'm never going to get sick of this.
"Hayden knows italian is your favourite, of course." Cameron chuckles beside us.
He wanted to make my favourite. Fuck, why does that make me so unbelievably happy?
"Mmm" I reply, biting and sucking on Hayden's lip. He smirks at me as I do it before diving in for more.
"Well, maybe after dinner we could all have some fun—" Cameron begins.
"Have fun doing what?" Mr.Holt's voice echoes down the hallway and into the kitchen as he appears at the entry way.
My stomach drops. Hayden and Cameron quickly straighten themselves out, standing there side by side looking at their father. Mrs.Holt walks in close behind and stops abruptly when she takes us all in just standing there, staring back at them.
Way to not be suspicious, guys.
"Video games. We're going to play FarCry after dinner." Cameron rushes to say.
Mr.Holt rolls his eyes before going to drop off his laptop bag beside me on the kitchen island. "You boys and your video games. You'd think you'd be taking this time off to study before school."
Hayden and Cameron both roll their eyes in sync.
"Dad, who studies before school? That's just insane. It's the summer." Cameron huffs. Hayden has already turned around and begun stirring the pot of sauce again.
"When you're top of your class, you'll be thanking me." He shakes his head.
"How are you doing, sweetheart?" Mrs.Holt says coming to greet me. She kisses me on the temple and I say my hello before she goes to check-in to see what Hayden is doing.
She examines the pot, sniffing and grabbing the ladle from him as he steps away to give her space. "I'm not sure why you insist on using so much seasoning. You'll hardly taste the meat." She says, stealing a spoonful of sauce and taking a taste.
My jaw clenches as I see Hayden slip into the background.
That has always made me so unbelievably upset. Here he goes making a nice dinner and all she does is complain? I clench my jaw. I don't want to say anything I shouldn't.
Mr.Holt looks at his cellphone, texting away. "Davidson is in tonight so I actually should have the night off for once." He sighs, setting his phone down on the counter. "Looks like we'll all be able to have dinner together tonight. Won't that be nice?" He smiles softly looking at the three of us boys.
We all exchange quick looks.
So much for having fun.
"Asher, love. Can you pass the salt?" Mrs.Holt says to me. I pick up the salt shaker from my right and pass it over to her. She smiles at me before sprinkling some over her food.
Of course, the sauce doesn't need spice at all. Especially after she was just complaining about it being heavily seasoned. I look away and focus back on my own plate.
"Asher, how's your summer going? Have any thought on your specialty you're interested in yet?" Mr.Holt smiles at me while digging into his spaghetti.
I nod my head and smile. "It's going well, sir. I haven't yet. I think I'd be interested in General Surgery." I quickly fill my mouth with more spaghetti so I won't have to speak more.
He squints his eyes at me. "Huh. Interesting. There's a gentlemen that I work with who you remind me a lot of. Neurologist. I'll see what I can do to set up a meeting between you two. I think that'd be a great field for you." He nods. His eyes shift to Cameron and Hayden.
"How about you? Hayden?" He bites. Clearly, he just wants to hear from Hayden, judging on the piercing stare he's giving him from the head of the table. Even behind his glasses, you can see the judgement flowing from his gaze.
"Darling, how about we just focus on our dinner tonight. We don't have to speak medicine. It's been a long few days." Mrs.Holt sighs.
"Hayden. Have you decided yet?"
"That's a lot to ask someone when they're not even in school yet." Hayden bites back, taking a stab at a meatball on his plate.
Mr.Holt scoffs. "I knew what field I wanted during my first year of high school. Cameron here already knows he wants to follow in my footsteps and become a cardiovascular surgeon."
"That's...great for you two? I don't know what you want me to say. Why do I have to follow the exact same path?" Hayden shifts in his chair.
I can tell by Cameron's furrowed brows that this conversation is making him uncomfortable too. Cameron hates this as much as I do.
Mr.Holt slams his hand down on the table, shaking the cutlery and making the dishes rattle. "It's not about following a path. It's about doing what's expected of you." He bites.
Hayden's jaw clenches. "I'm doing a really good job at the studio right now. I actually enjoy being a sound technician and I'm making really great money."
Mr.Holt laughs loudly, sitting back in his chair. "Great money." He scoffs. "I'm so sure. You think you'll be able to get all of this doing what you're doing? You're not going anywhere if you keep playing your silly little games. You need to get serious, Hayden." He throws his dinner napkin on his plate. He barely even ate his food. The food Hayden took the time to make.
"He's really great at what he does." I say out loud.
The dinner table goes silent. Everyone's eyes are on me, including Cameron and Haydens. My heart picks up and I swallow deeply. I've never spoken out before but...I couldn't hold myself back.
"Asher, this is a family matter–"
"Asher is family." Cameron speaks up. "And he's right. Hayden is going to go far in whatever he chooses to do because he's really great."
Mr. and Mrs. Holt look at their boys and then at each other.
Mrs. Holt swallows and then decides to speak up. "Cameron, darling. Hayden...is just confused. He doesn't know what he wants—"
"No, I think you're the one who's confused, Mom. Hayden has been saying exactly what he wants for years and you two aren't listening to him." Cameron says, shaking his head.
"Where is this coming from? Cameron, you never speak out like this." Mrs.Holt gasps, with a hand on her chest like it's the craziest thing her sons are sticking up for eachother. Wild concept, apparently.
"Yeah, I'm not proud of that. I should've been speaking up for my brother a long time ago." Cameron pushes against the table, his chair squeaking across the floor.
"Cameron, don't you dare walk away from this table." Mr. Holt orders. "We give you boys everything. A big house, food in your stomachs, an education and this is how you disrespect us?"
"The day that you realize that your son is worth more than all of that combined...it'll already be too late." I say standing up.
Mr. Holts mouth shuts instantly as he stares at me. Clearly, I've struck a nerve by speaking up at all.
"Come on." Cameron collects his dish and so do Hayden and I as we walk away and into the kitchen.
I can't help but notice Hayden's quietness. I hate feeling it. He deserves better than that.
I see him turn to leave for his bedroom, I'm sure, but before he can make it far I whip out my hand and grab him by the arm. "Hey, sleepover at my place tonight?" I say before slipping my dish into the dishwasher. I look at Cameron. "Let's raid the pantry for snacks." I wink.
Cameron's eyes light up as he nods his head and dashes for the pantry. I look at Hayden who looks unsettled. I know him enough now to know that he was planning on escaping to the solitary of his own room tonight.
Well, he's out of luck. He's not alone anymore.
I look back over my shoulder to the living room to see their parents looking shocked and angry, talking amongst themselves.
"Come on, let's go turn this night around." I smile, slipping my hand into his and giving it a soft squeeze before letting go.
His eyes widen, looking over my shoulder to see if his parents were looking. Realizing they saw nothing, I catch the small smile tugging at his lips.
"Okay." He answers.
