Chapter 1- Alex

The sun rose high on a cottage on the outskirts of the small town of Flora. Inside this cottage, a young woman named Alex was just waking up. She sat up in bed and stretched, then climbed out of bed to get dressed for the day. She dressed in her usual outfit, which consisted of a pink sleeveless dress with a white long sleeve shirt underneath, white knee-high socks, and pink boots. After tying her shoulder length blonde hair into twin tails with two pink ribbons, and leaving the rest of her hair down, she grabbed her basket with a book inside it, raced down the stairs of the cottage, and was ready to go into town. "Going into town, Alex?" Jade, Alex's best friend, asked. Alex smiled fondly at her best friend. Alex had first met Jade when she had received a scholarship to Royale High back when she was 14 years old. The two girls had instantly become best friends and it had remained that way all throughout high school. When the two had graduated high school, they decided to buy a cottage and live together. They had been best friends for 11 years now. Jade aspired to become a famous inventor, even though her ideas were quite eccentric and didn't always work. Alex's passion lay with books. Alex loved to read any kind of book she could get her hands on, whether it was a cheesy romance novel or a whimsical fantasy book. Alex often dreamed about having an adventure like the ones in her books, but never once thought about leaving Jade behind. They cared about each other too much.

"I have to return this book to Charli, and pick up some bread and eggs. I'll be home in an hour, like usual." Alex replied. "Alright. Just don't come home too late." Jade added. "I won't!" Alex yelled back as she exited the house, shut the door behind her, and started down the dirt path to town. Alex walked along, enjoying the cool autumn breeze blowing through her hair. Small birds chirped and flew through the air as Alex strolled along. Alex tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear. As the town came into view, Alex started to sing softly to herself, getting louder with each note she sang.

[Alex]
Little town, it's a quiet village
Everyday, like the one before
Little town, full of little people
Waking up to say-

[Townspeople]
Good morning!
Good morning!
Good morning!
Good morning!
Good morning!

Soon the whole town was bustling with activity as people went about their daily lives and getting whatever suited their needs.

[Alex]
There goes the baker with his tray like always
The same old bread and rolls to sell
Every morning just the same
Since the morning that we came
To this poor, little town

"Good morning, Alex." The baker greeted as Alex passed by.

"Morning, sir." Alex replied politely.

"Where are you off to?"

"The library. I just finished the most wonderful book about a girl and a stalker-"

"That's nice. Marie! The bread! Hurry up!" He called to his wife, interrupting Alex. Alex just shrugged her shoulders and continued on her way to the library.

[Townspeople]
Look, there she goes
That girl is strange, no question
Dazed and distracted
Can't you tell?
Never part of any crowd
Cause her head's up on some cloud
No denying she's a funny girl, that Alex!

Alex hopped on a passing carriage and watched the people as the carriage drove through town.

[Carriage Driver]
Hello!

[Woman]
Good day!

[Woman]
Hello!

[Man]
Good day!

[Woman]
How is your wife?

[Woman]
I need six eggs!

[Man]
That's too expensive!

[Alex]
There must be more than this old, boring life!

Alex jumped off the carriage as it passed the library. As Alex opened the door of the small library, a little bell rang to indicate that she had entered. "Good morning, Lobster." Alex said to the cat that was laying on a stack of books by the window. Lobster, as his name suggested, was a reddish orange striped tabby cat who enjoyed napping. Lobster meowed as if to say hello in reply and Alex bent down to pet Lobster and scratch him behind the ears as she did every morning when she came in. Lobster purred happily in reply. "Alex!" A soft, breathy voice called out. That voice belonged to Charli, who owned the library. She wore a white shirt, an orange tie, an orange sweater vest, a dark orange skirt, white knee-length socks, and orange boots. Alex had also befriended Charli in high school. After they had graduated, Charli had decided to open her own library, as it had been her dream when she was younger. Jade and Alex still remained best friends with her as well, even though Jade was busy and rarely got a chance to see her. "Good morning, Charli! I've come to return the book I borrowed." Alex said.

"Finished already? Though I'm not surprised. You were a complete bookworm in high school and you're an even bigger bookworm now." Charli commented.

"Oh, I couldn't put it down! Have you got anything new?" Alex asked as she handed the book back to Charli.

"Not since yesterday. Sorry Alex."

"That's alright. I'll borrow...this one!" Alex happily exclaimed, grabbing a blue covered book off a nearby shelf of books.

"That one?" Charli asked, tucking a strand of her auburn hair behind her ear as her amber eyes shone with playful kindness. "You've read this book a million times, Alex."

"I know, but it's my favorite! Far off places, daring battles, magic spells, a man in disguise!" Alex exclaimed as she walked back over to Charli.

"Well, Alex, if you love it all that much, it's yours." Charli said, handing it back to Alex.

"But Charli...!"

"I insist. Besides, we're best friends. Consider it a gift."

"Well thank you Charli! Thank you very much!"

Alex waved goodbye and left the library as Charli smiled and waved back. Lobster meowed once more as if to say goodbye. Alex's hazel eyes shone with excitement and happiness as she opened the book and started to read it. Alex was so lost in her book that she didn't notice three guys staring at her as she left.

[Men]
Look, there she goes
That girl is so peculiar
I wonder if she's feeling well

[Women]
With a dreamy far off look

[Men]
And her nose stuck in a book

[Townspeople]
What a puzzle
To the rest of us
Is Alex!

Alex walked to the center of town and sat down on the fountain as she continued to read her book. A couple of sheep walked by and stopped, curious as to what Alex was doing.

[Alex]
Oh, isn't this amazing?
It's my favorite part
Because you'll see
Here's where she meets Prince Charming
But she won't discover that it's him
Till chapter three

Alex got up from the fountain and continued to walk as she read her book.

[Townspeople]
Now it's no wonder
That her nickname's Beauty
Her looks have got no parallel
But behind that fair facade
I'm afraid she's rather odd
Very different from the rest of us
Yes, different from the rest of us
She's nothing like the rest of us
Yes, different from the rest of us is Alex!

Alex continued to mind her business, walking forward as a flock of geese flew overhead. There was a sudden gunshot and one of the geese began falling. Ron tried to catch it in the sack, but missed and it fell to the ground. He looked around, hoping no one saw his mistake, and stuffed the bird into his bag. He went back over to the young man who had shot the gun. This young man's name was Jax. He was dressed in a red and white collared shirt, dark blue pants, and white boots. Ron was dressed in a white t-shirt, a red tie, light blue pants, black boots, and wore a pair of round glasses.

"Wow, you didn't miss a shot, Jax! You're the greatest hunter in the whole world!" Ron exclaimed.

"I know." Jax said arrogantly, running a hand through his bright red hair as he walked away.

"No beast alive stands a chance against you, and no girl for that matter." Ron said as he followed Jax.

"It's true, Ron. And I've got my sights set on that one." Jax gestured towards Alex who stopped reading to buy some bread and eggs.

"The inventor's best friend?!" Ron asked in shock.

"She's the one! The lucky girl I'm going to marry!" Jax proclaimed.

"But she's-" Ron started to protest.

"The most beautiful girl in town!"

"I know, but-"

"That makes her the best. And don't I deserve the best?"

"Well, of course! But-"

Jax walked away from Ron and began to sing about Alex.

[Jax]
Right from the moment
When I met her, saw her
I said she's gorgeous and I fell
Here in town, there's only she
Who's as beautiful as me
So, I'm making plans to woo and marry Alex

Jax noticed Alex walked by and tried to catch her attention, but his face fell when Alex didn't look his way. Jax followed quickly behind her and tried to catch up. Vanessa, Alissa, and Jenny, three girls from the village, looked up as they saw Jax walking by.

[Vanessa]
Look, there he goes
Isn't he dreamy?
Sir Jax

[Alissa]
Oh, he's so cute
Be still my heart
I'm hardly breathing

[Jenny]
He's such a tall, dark, strong, and handsome brute!

Jax was still continuing to run after Alex but kept getting interrupted by the townspeople trying to buy things.

[Woman]
Hello!

[Jax]
Pardon

[Alex]
Good day!

[Woman]
But of course!

[Woman]
You call this bacon?

[Woman]
What lovely grapes!

[Man]
Some cheese-

[Woman]
Ten yards!

[Man]
One pound!

[Jax]
Excuse me! Please let me through!

[Cheese Merchant]
I'll get the knife!

[Woman]
This bread-

[Woman]
Those fish-

[Woman]
It's stale!

[Woman]
They smell!

[Man]
Madame's mistaken

[Woman]
Well, maybe so

[Townsfolk]
Good morning! Oh, good morning!

[Alex]
There must be more than this old, boring life!

[Jax]
Just watch, I'm going to make Alex my wife!

[Townsfolk]
Look there she goes
That girl is strange but special
A most peculiar girl indeed

[Woman]
It's a pity and a sin

[Man]
She doesn't quite fit in

[Townsfolk]
Cause she really is a funny girl
A beauty but a funny girl
She really is a funny girl
That Alex!
