3rd Person

An elderly man with grey hair and hazel eyes wearing a black robe with red flame designs walked into the room and smiled when he saw his granddaughter sleeping in her bed. He went to over to the bed and gently shook her shoulder saying, "Adara, wake up. Your firebending training starts in forty-five minutes. You don't want to be late." The little girl swiped her father's hand away and groaned, "Five more minutes, Grandfather."

Her grandfather smirked and stated dramatically, "Fine. I guess that I'll have to tell General Iroh that Adara, daughter of the late Colonel Iri, would not be continuing her firebending training because she wanted to sleep for five more minutes." It was always a treat when General Iroh substituted for her actual firebending trainer because while they trained, he would tell her about his adventures in being a commanding officer and he would tell her stories of his adventures with her father too, who died trying to protect Lu Ten in the Siege of Ba Sing Se. In many ways, he reminded her of her grandfather. With this in mind, Adara peeped opened one of her hazel eyes and proclaimed, "If Iroh heard what you just said, he would say that a man needs his rest."

"But, you're not a man now, are you? Therefore, you will get up or things will get more serious. For example, there is a tickle fight coming in three, two-" Suddenly, Adara's grandfather was interrupted by his nine year old granddaughter shrieking, "Okay! I'm up! I'm up! No need for tickling!" Her grandfather smiled in triumph and rubbed his daughter's hair stating, "Good. Your training will take place in the courtyard. You will be having a special guests to train with you in the courtyard today. I love you, my little firecracker."

"I love you too, Grandfather." Adara said and embraced him. When her grandfather left the room, Adara got ready for her training. She pulled her long black hair into a bun and put on a red robe with an orange shirt underneath with black pants. She quickly put on her shoes and went into the living room where she saw her grandfather.

"I hope you have a great day of training, my little firecracker." He asked as his granddaughter while she gave him a hug and a peck on the cheek. Adara nodded and said, "Will you come with me and watch me train today?"

"I was hoping that you would ask. Your instructor has told me that you've been improving in your firebending." Her grandfather said. He stood up and followed Adara out into the courtyard. When they arrived in the courtyard, she beamed when she saw both Iroh and Zuko, who was carrying a bag.

"General Iroh, Zuko! It's so good to see you!" She called. She was about to embrace them both, but stopped when she remembered her manners. She bowed to the both of them, then she laughed and hugged them while her grandfather smiled and sat on bench near a pond behind them.

"Adara, how are you doing?" Iroh questioned.

"I'm doing well! Grandfather says that I'm improving in my firebending. Will you be staying for dinner?" Adara proudly informed them.

"I'm sad to say that we will not. We have some business that we need to take care of later. Are you ready to begin?" Iroh questioned. Adara nodded and took her place next to Zuko. General Iroh walked in front of both of them and said, "Today, we will be doing something rather different. It is important to acquire different skills other than firebending because there are times when you might not be able to fire bend. Rare that may be, but you can never be to careful. I want the both of you to choose a weapon to defend yourself. Zuko, can you bring out the weapons?"

Zuko nodded and presented various different weapons from the bag that he was carrying. There were a few different types of weapons such as bow staffs, broad swords, double-edged swords, knives, and axes, but Adara already had her eyes set on one weapon. A bow. When Iroh allowed them to choose their weapon, Adara carefully picked up the weapon and observed the intricate flame designs on the bow. Her grandfather noticed this and went over to her while Iroh helped Zuko with the broadswords he had chosen.

"A fine choice you made, Adara, but mastering the bow will take many years. It requires precision and aim. Are you sure that you are up for the task?" Her grandfather questioned. Adara nodded. She knew that this was the weapon for her and she glanced at her grandfather who gave her smile to which she returned. They went over to a target and her grandfather showed her how to notch the arrow onto the bow and he helped her aim. She fired at the target, but she missed. She grew frustrated and tried again and again, but kept missing. Her grandfather noticed how upset she was getting.

Her grandfather put his arm on Adara's shoulder and he said, "You aren't going to master the bow in a day, Adara. Like I said earlier, it is going to take a long time." Adara sighed, "I know that, but I can't even hit the target, Grandpa."

"Let me help you a little it more, Adara." Her grandfather said. Adara sighed and nodded.

"Alright. Lets see how you aim." Her grandfather ordered. Adara notched an arrow to the bow and took aim at the target. Then, her grandfather said, "You are too stiff. You must relax and your form needs to improve." He helped her get into the proper stance and the next time she fired at the target, she was able to hit it. It wasn't a bulls eye, but she was happy nonetheless. She shrieked with happiness and hugged her grandfather saying, "Thank-you, Grandpa."

"You're welcome, firecracker." Her grandfather said. Suddenly, her grandfather gasped and fell to the ground.

"Grandpa?" Adara questioned. She was about to help him up, but Iroh and a couple of other servants were one step ahead. They gently pushed Adara back and carried her grandfather into the house. She would've followed them inside, but Zuko held her back.

"Zuko, let me go. That's my grandfather." Adara pleaded, but Zuko replied, "Adara, Uncle Iroh and the other servants have this under control. Right now, we need to be out of their way, so that they can help your grandfather." Adara stopped struggling realizing that Zuko was right. Tears rolled down Adara's face and Zuko held her tight and let her cry into his shoulder.

An hour later, Iroh came out and sadness was shown clearly in his eyes. He walked over to Adara and said, "Adara, I'm afraid to say that your grandfather is not well at all. In fact, he may not even last the night. You may see him." No. Adara couldn't lose the only family she had left. She ran inside towards her grandfather's bedroom and stopped when she saw him pale and lying on the bed. Her grandfather turned towards her and he beckoned her to him.

Adara slowly walked over to him still in shock that this is even happening. She next to his bedside and her grandfather said, "My dear girl, I'm afraid that my time is near its end."

"No. Grandfather, please. I can't lose you! I don't know what I'll do without you." Adara cried.

"Everything will be alright, Adara. Colonel Shinu has agreed to take care of you when I'm gone." Her grandfather said brushing away a strand of her hair.

"No, please. It's not fair." She cried.

"Adara, I will always be with you. Do you want me to tell you a story? The one about the dragon's egg?" Her grandfather questioned. Adara nodded. She always loved hearing her grandfather's stories and she feared that this would be the last time she would get to hear them. Her grandfather continued, "Back when I was a lad, I was friends with a young boy named Aang and he was an airbender. He was one of my best friends and we would get into all sorts of trouble together. There was this one time when we rescued a dragon's egg from a group of poachers. We came across the poachers because I had come across a map of dragon eggs and I invited Aang along to see the nest."

"After searching three mountain tops, we came across the poachers who were trying to steal the dragon's eggs. Aang and I were furious, but we couldn't take on all the poachers at once. So, we devised a plan. We would act like the mother was coming back. Aang had a sky bison named Appa and he started growling and I used my firebending to act like a dragon's breath. I didn't think my firebending was strong enough, so Aang helped me expand it by using his airbending. We were able to drive the poachers off and save the egg. The mother came back later and she saw that Aang was holding the egg. I was able to distract the dragon. Then, Aang almost dropped the egg, but he was able to catch it at the last second. The mother saw this and we earned it's trust. As a reward, I was actually able to ride the dragon all the way back home while Aang went back to the Air Temple."

"Not long after this, something happened to Aang. This is something I never told you, Adara, and it's time that you knew. After a few months of not hearing from him, I went to the Air Temple and was granted permission of being among the few outsiders to ever enter. It was then that I met Monk Gyatso and he informed me that Aang was the Avatar and that he had runaway. I was saddened by this news and returned home. Later, I was devastated to hear that the Air Nation was wiped out. Something must have happened that had prevented Aang from coming back because even if he ran away, he would've returned to help his people. Even though it's been many years, I still believe that the Avatar will come back. That Aang will one day return." Suddenly, her grandfather started coughing when he was finished coughing, he turned to Adara and said, "I'm afraid that my time has come. I will always love you, my little firecracker." He closed his eyes for the last time and Adara whispered,

"I love you too, Grandpa Kuzon."
