You're Late

Breakfast had gone as normal. Lance and Keith bickering, Pidge and Hunk doing chemistry experiments with their breakfast, and Shiro looking all but impressed with his fellow paladins.

"So, what's the plan for today?" Matt finally asked. Coran jumped up excitedly to suggest god knows what, but Allura was the first to speak.

"I thought Pidge, Y/N, and I should spend the day together!" Everyone looked to the Princess slightly confused. "You know... because we haven't really had a chance to talk."

Allura tried to smile kindly. "And we have a lot in common..."

"Like what?" Pidge muttered.

"We're all girls! Don't you think we should spend some time together?" The princess asked. After Y/N arrived, Allura really took notice to how close all of the boys were. Yet, she, Pidge, and Y/N didn't seem to be on that same level. Though Allura was technically the other girls' superior and almost sub-parent here in space, the paladins felt more like friends and family to her. People she wanted to share a closer bond with.

"I'm hardly a girl. Take Lance with you." Pidge suggested tiredly, jabbing at rover who spun circles around her head.

"Oh, Pidge, that doesn't matter!" Allura tried to use the most convincing voice possible. "It will be fun!"

"Alright." Pidge agreed, standing up with a huff. Allura jumped up a little too excitedly, motioning for Y/N to stand also. "If anyone needs us, just radio!" The princess nearly squealed before dragging Y/N off out into the hall.

"Matt's gonna be grumpy since Allura stole his girlfriend, so, uh, watch out." Pidge warned. Her brothers mouth fell agape with both a feeling of betrayal and embarrassment. As Pidge ran away, Matt refused to look up because he could feel the rest of the boys' eyes on him. Especially Shiro's.

"You humans have such a fickle way of communicating." Coran shook his head and left the room before some fight broke out. Even after Pidge and Coran left, the room was silent. Matt's face was flushed a tomato red, and he knew it.

"GIRLFRIEND?" Lance finally hollered at the top of his lungs in disbelief.

"Not. Girlfriend." Matt snapped back, trying to hide his face in his hands.

"Then why'd Pidge say so?" Shiro stepped closer to Matt, causing the auburn haired boy to nearly crumble away in anxiety.

"Because, it's Pidge! She says things like that to get on my nerves! Just ignore it." He said defensively.

"Well, judging by the way you two were acting this morning... it sure looked like it. Unless the cameras in the red lion had a glitch in them, seemed like you two were pretty close." Keith said smugly, leaning up against one of the walls. Truth was, there were no cameras in the red lion. Keith had just mentioned it to throw a curve ball into the conversation.

Shiro had steam coming out of his ears and Lance looked as if he were about to faint from disbelief. Of all people, Matt had gotten to her? He couldn't believe it.

"WOAH WOAH WOAH!" Matt began to let out panicky breaths, his hands stretched out before Shiro in defence. "Okay before anyone gets any ideas--We almost died and--I don't know we just ended up like that! I didn't know if we were dead or--"

"What ever happened to checking for a pulse?" Lance crossed his arms and furrowed his brows.

"Ah—" Matt stuttered. "Well, I—uh..." He gave up in trying to defend his case. No amount of information would change how Shiro felt about this situation anyways.

"What happened anyways?" Shiro asked, his expression softening a little.

Matt sighed and reluctantly told Shiro the whole story. When he repeated it, he came to realize how harmless it really was. Plus, he'd done everything in his power to try to save Y/N, eventually going down with her once she fell. He hadn't abandoned her.

"So... I'm sorry. I should've known better." Matt apologized after he finished off the entire story. Shiro was the last person he wanted to let down, especially after all Shiro had sacrificed himself for him on the Galra ship.

"Why are you sorry?" Shiro finally asked softly. "These things happen. They're scary, but you made it out. All because you cared enough to stick around and not just save yourself."

Matt stared blankly at Shiro. For so long, in fact, that eventually the black paladin lightly punched his shoulder and turned to leave the room.

"But, she's still not your girlfriend. Unless, you know, she wants to be." He added in just as he left the door, leaving Matt washed over with a sense of relief. If that was the worst thing Shiro had to say about everything that happened, he was beyond relieved.

Lance left just after Shiro in a hurry, then followed by Hunk, leaving just Matt and Keith.

"Are you and Pidge plotting against me or something?" The rebel fighter asked with a light scoff.

"You'll never know." Keith smirked a little and then left the room in a hurry just as the others had.

The day went on painfully slowly. And to the other Paladin's misfortune, Pidge wasn't lying when she said Matt would get grumpy. The boy had become a lethargic, sulking person who no one dared to challenge in a training fight. They let him be alone, filing his way through some of the rebel information he'd fallen behind on the last few days. Earlier in the day, Matt had radioed to ask when they'd be done, but no real answer came. All that came through was a morse code message, which he eventually figured out to be saying the number 10. All he could do was assume that the 10 meant 10 o'clock. At least Pidge answered in one way or another.

Every few minutes, Matt would glance up to the clock, just hoping 10 p.m. would roll around sooner. To his avail, time just seemed to slow.

Unable to take it any longer, Matt made his way to the showers. He thought he took his time, but it turned out he only burned away fifteen minutes. Grumbling in frustration, he stumbled down the hallway with his sopping wet hair constantly falling in his eyes. Roaming around restlessly, he couldn't help by replay the events from earlier in the day. Part of him was filled with warmth just thinking about how close he and Y/N had been at times, while another part of him was filled with complete apprehension. She'd actually agreed to partner up with him on missions. That meant they'd be spending a lot of time together.

A cold draft swept across Matt's bare feet, causing him to jump up slightly. He swept the mop of hair out of his eyes and looked to where it had come from. To his surprise, it had come from Y/N's room, her door swung wide open. Curiously, and completely lacking self control, Matt sauntered into the room. Was she here? Why was the door open? Had she forgotten this morning? Stepping in, he found the room to be completely empty. Y/N was nowhere to be seen.

Matt excitedly threw himself into the bed and beneath the covers. The Y/F/C blanket was warm and soft, and staring out to the view he had been waiting so long to admire was enough to lull him to sleep.

Though they had planned to be finished at ten o'clock, the girls had run later than expected. They got completely wrapped up in happily getting to know one another better and sharing funny stories about the boys doing stupid things when they thought no one was watching. When they weren't fighting Zarkon, or completely engrossed in training, the three girls agreed to spend more time together seeing as how enjoyable it really was.

Y/N slowly made her way back to her room. After a day full of laugher and relaxation, she realized how much she was missing out on while living on Aturdir. She didn't have any friends there. Not a single person she could share her thoughts with or confide in. Her heart was now filled with such a comfort and joy, she never wanted to leave the castle or her friends.

The girl quickly changed and then found her way into the bed. Though, when she reached for the covers, they wouldn't budge. They were stuck, and it seemed the harder she tugged, the more the blankets tugged back. Giving up, Y/N laid down and nuzzled her face into the pillow.

Matt was awoken by all of she shuffling and pulling, and once he felt Y/N settle, he rolled over. His face was now only a few inches from hers, and all it took was one breath to wake the girl.

"WOAH!" She hollered, flying backwards onto the floor. Matt peered over the edge and giggled.

"You're late." He muttered.

"AND YOU'RE IN MY BED!" She stood up, grabbing his shoulders, dragging him out of the bed. Once he was on the floor, she reclaimed her space in the bed and scowled at him.

"Yours is more comfortable than mine. Plus, the view." He explained.

"Matt!" Y/N growled, jumping out of the bed once more and forcefully pushing him out of the room.

Matt tried to playfully sneak his way back into the room, but Y/N just shoved him twice as hard, sending him laughing and stumbling back into the hall. "Goodnight, Matt." She laughed lightly before shutting the door, very audibly locking it too.

"Rough go?" Hunk asked, staring awkwardly at Matt standing in the hall, a smirk glued on his face.

"Don't try to sleep in Y/N's bed without asking." He admitted.

"I'm going to the kitchen, wanna come?" Hunk asked, helping Matt off of the ground.

"You bet!" Matt agreed, happily venturing off with Hunk.

While enjoying his late night snack, Matt found one of the radios in the kitchen. He picked it up mischievously and began tinkering with the settings.

"Psssst— Y/N." He whispered into the airwaves. "I figured out how to talk to only one person."

A few moments of silence passed, but then the familiar muffled buzzing sounded, meaning someone was about to speak.

"No you haven't genius." Lance declared through a groggy, tired voice. Matt immediately cringed.

"Matt," Another voice came through. "Go to channel seven and enter the code 5725. That's how you only talk to Y/N." Pidge explained.

"Ok thanks Pidge!" Her brother replied happily.

"You're not supposed to be helping him, Pidge!" Lance complained.

"Too late." Pidge laughed.

As quickly as possible, Matt had changed the channel and entered the code, directing his messages only to Y/N.

"Y/N, is this working?"

"No." She replied.

"Quiznack." Matt started once again fiddling with the small radio, trying to figure out what he'd done wrong.

"Matt," Y/N laughed. "It's obviously working. I told you no."

The boy wanted to throw his face into the table. "I'm tired, alright?" He whined. Waving off to Hunk, Matt left the kitchen with the radio and head back to his room. All he hoped was that Y/N wasn't already asleep when he got to his bed, because he still wanted to talk with her seeing as how she wouldn't let him sleep in her bed.
