I'll Be Back Before You Know I'm Gone
Third Person
Sam was awoken by silence. Total silence.
That might have been unusual to wake up to, but the fact was, she was used to hearing snoring. Not loud enough to keep her awake, but it was enough to distinguish between all the other sounds of the night. The snoring was gone, which made her suspect one thing: He wasn't there.
The mermaid turned to the other side of the large, king sized bed, and found an empty spot, blankets turned over like someone had been there before. She was right. Sam sighed before sitting up and turning her gaze to scan the whole bedroom, but still nothing but inanimate objects were there. Where was he?
Then, when she looked towards the hallway, she found a different light, yellow instead of the normal blue that she'd normally see. It wasn't the Nexus, but more likely a lamp, given from how dim it was.
Following her instincts, Sam slid off the bed and swam towards it. The closer she got, the more she realized it was coming from the dining room, where Rasmus and him normally worked. She peered inside and found a familiar black and white figure hunched over and scribbling down something. He would pause every once in a while to think, but then went back to what he was doing. Several crumpled up papers were off to the side of his desk, indicating to her that whatever he was writing, he had made several drafts of and just couldn't make it perfect.
Sam snickered to herself. He always was a bit of a perfectionist.
But, she couldn't help but feel a little wistful. He had been working himself to the bone lately, it felt like he never stopped working, even now. Countless sleepless nights and mornings of Sam finding him passed out over his work had taken a toil on them both. Just when Sam thought he was getting over it and would actually sleep tonight, he had to work. Again.
She sighed and swiftly came to his side, then leaned down and lightly wrapped her arms around him, giving a hug from the back. Cody paused immediately as he received it, but soon leaned back into her embrace.
"Cody Maverick, come back to sleep." She sang, getting a smile out of him.
How badly Cody wanted to stay, but he had something to do. KrakenKid challenged him, and he said yes. He couldn't back out now. "I have an early meeting out of town..." He told her, glancing up as she rested her head on his.
Sam sighed deeply and glanced back. The "Sun" hadn't even come up yet. "It's still dark outside."
Cody chuckled. She was trying to get him to stay, using any reason possible. He could respect that, but he still couldn't say yes. "I know." He hushed her. Slowly, his gaze fell to his letter. Though he didn't want to admit that maybe he would need to give this letter to her in unfortunate circumstances, he had to just in case. "I just have to write something down."
Sam's head lifted from his and she shook it. "Why do you write like you're running out of time?" Cody attempted to shush her to stop her from her attempts, but she kept going. "Come back to bed. That would be enough." All she wanted at that moment was a little sleep with her love.
"I'll be back before you know I'm gone." Cody insisted, though he still wasn't sure if he was lying or not.
"Come back to sleep!" She pleaded.
Cody just huffed. "This meetings at dawn."
Sam finally gave it up. He was dead set on going to whatever this "Meeting" was, so it must've been important. She slowly slipped her arms away from her hug and started to move away. "Well I'm going back to sleep."
Cody felt her presence start to leave him, and a thought came to him: He might not ever say goodbye to her again if his duel didn't go well. He whipped around and grabbed her hand. She turned back in surprise, and Cody paused for a moment. He didn't want to look desperate, she couldn't know what was going on. "Hey." He said lightly. He brought her close to him, tugging at her hand until he could gently kiss her hand. "Best of wives, and best of women."
Sam's body got a warm and fuzzy feeling, filling her up until she couldn't help but smile brightly at him. She didn't have to say a word as she left, flashing a smile at him. Cody knew he did good.
If there was a chance he was going to die, that's what he wanted her last memory of him to be.

And here's a little short for ya! The song is pretty short but I thought of this and it came up really cute in my mind so hopefully y'all like it! The song is called "Best of Wives and Best of Women"
This takes place after "Dear Cody Maverick" where Cody and KrakenKid are extremely salty and KrakenKid challenges Cody to a duel. Cody was writing a letter to Sam, just encase he loses his life.
I hope you like it! Be sure to comment what you thought of it, and I'll see you later!
