Basil was lying on the small bunk in the little cabin he had been given. He was no use to what was going on at the moment. He wasn't a scientist and at the moment there was nothing to fight. They had Loki in their custody and there was nothing to storm. Natasha had shown him to the armoury where he had been allowed to pick amongst their blades. Some of them had weird buttons and retractable blades. Basil didn't like them so he picked the ten simplest ones he could find. Five blades of equal size were looped round his waist. Two smaller ones in each of his boots and two long ones, long enough to almost be short swords were strapped to his thighs. Another set of long ones were attracted via a leather harness to his back, crossing over between his shoulder blades. His blue helmet was on the bed next to him. Eyeholes seeming to stare at the ceiling
The cabin itself was nothing more than a metal room with a bunk, a small bathroom and a small closet. A hologram of a window was on the wall. Apparently Basil could set it to anything he liked. He turned it off. Not used to holograms and their illusions. Instead he had his phone in his hand. A small shaky video playing. The sound was off but the video brought a small sad to his face as he watched the black and white footage. It was a collection of the footage taken of captain America and the howling commandos. Steve was centre frame but he could see himself and Bucky in the background. His younger self was pulling faces at the camera as Bucky tried not to laugh. He had his arm round Bucky's shoulders, leaning into the taller man as Bucky smacked him round the back of the head jokingly. They had looked so happy then.
Basil sniffed and wiped the tears from his eyes as he laughed. His younger self had turned towards Bucky, head tipped up and a wide smile on his face as he talked. He was so painfully in love Basil wondered how he hadn't realised the feeling sooner. The video ended and cut to the next clip. Bucky standing terrified against a tree as Basil threw knives at him. This time, he laughed loudly as he remembered that moment. The fear on Bucky's face.
A knock on the door disturbed him. Basil turned his phone off and placed it back on the bed before standing up. Another knock sounded and he poked his head through the metal. "Jesus", Steve jumped as Basil's head phased through the door. "Basil, really?"
"Hi Steve", he grinned, one hand wiping any remaining traces of his tears away. "What are you calling on me for?" He walked straight through the metal and looked down to double check that all his new blades had followed him. They were all there. One part of his mind wondered how far his powers to stretch too.
Steve took him but the shoulder and pulled him aside. "I need your help. I've just been talking with Banner and Stark and they think that shield has ulterior motives with the tesseract. You and I are going to find out what".
"So you need me to sneak around", Basil stated. Steve nodded. He clapped his hands together with a grin. "Good. I've been dying to ever since we boarded this thing. Where shall we start fist?"
"I think the storage rooms are a good bet. They're on the lower floors".
"How many floors below?" Basil asked.
"Um, four I think".
"And they cover the whole of the lower floors?"
"The map I check suggested so".
"Great", Basil grabbed Steve by the forearms and grinned. "I want to try something out and as your doctor, I say that this will be good for your health. Hold on".
"What"- Steve started but cut off with a Yelp as they dropped through the floor. Basil laughed gleefully as they fell, passing through each floor like ghosts. When he had counted the number of floors he let go and they both crashed heavily in a heap on the metal. Steve rolled over with a grunt. "A little warning next time?" He asked with a sigh. "I feel like half my body was left behind".
Basil gave a whoop and pushed himself up. "Normally I can control my descent. It's a lot harder with another person, I'll have to keep that in mind". He patted Steve on the shoulder as he got to his feet. "At lest we didn't fall right through the ship and into open air", he grinned. "That would have been bad. I've been concentrating on not doing that ever since we took off. It's actually a lot harder than it sounds".
"Jesus Christ", Steve muttered as Basil pulled him to his feet. "Just warn me please".
"Okay Cap", Basil laughed. Steve winced.
"Your psycho laugh doesn't help Parrish". He paused. "How was this good for my health?"
"Adapting to strange and disorientating situations", Basil shrugged as he pulled the larger man to his feet. "Jesus Christ Steve, how much to you weigh?"
"Well Bucky always said that I was about a hundred soaking wet".
"That man could pick me up and I would die happy", Basil sighed as he let go of Steve's arm. He poked a bicep. "These super soldier muscles really don't look real sometimes. You look like one of those drawings by Tom of Finland come to life. It's quite weird sometimes".
"Tom of Finland?" Steve asked.
Basil grinned and waved a hand. "I'll show you later". He inwardly sniggered at the mental image of Steve's face upon seeing the famous drawings. "Now, where shall we start?"

Everyone was in the lab when Steve and Basil entered. Fury, Bruce and Stark were already in there talking about the tesseract. The lab was a mostly glass room full of white tables and hanging glass screens covered in holo images. Basil glanced around as he walked through the wall, Steve coming through the door just behind him.
"What is Phase 2?" Tony asked, eyeing a screen slyly.
Steve set down the hydra gun they had found in the storage rooms. One of many guns in fact. Just looking at them made Basil feel ill. He had watched a lot of men die to these. Die in his arms from burns and holes in their stomachs made by blue blasts. Had stitched up a lot of men and cauterised a blown off limb. When Steve set the gun on the table, it clanged harshly on the metal surface. "Phase 2 is Shield using the cube to make weapons", Steve stated loudly. "Sorry, the computer was moving a little slow for me".
"Rogers, Parrish. We gathered everything related to the tesseract. This does not mean that we are making"- Nick Fury tried to explain.
Tony cut him off. "I'm sorry Nick. what were you lying?" He swivelled the screen round so that they could see the missile plans laid out across it. The blue energy sign inside the weapons made Basil angry.
"I was wrong director", Steve stated coldly. "The world hasn't changed a bit".
Basil laughed and the noise was cold, sounding more villain like than usual. He noticed Steve wince at the sound as Tony's eyes widened. "I told Steve that this wasn't worth it and I was right. If you're making weapons from the tesseract then you're a bad as hydra. We killed ourselves crashing one plane of tesseract powered bombs into the sea. I would quite happily do it again".
Thor and Natasha entered while they were speaking. "Did you know about this?" Bruce asked, pointing at the missile plans. Basil was staring coldly at Nick Fury, almost daring him to lie again.
"You want to think about removing yourself from this environment doctor?" She stated, taking a step forwards.
Bruce chuckled. "I was in Calcutta. I was pretty well removed".
"Loki is manipulating you", Natasha took another step.
"Any you've been doing what, exactly?" Bruce retorted.
"You didn't come here because I bat my eyelashes at you".
"Yes and I'm not leaving because you get a little twitchy". He gestured to the screen. "I'd like to know why shield is using the tesseract to build weapons of mass destruction".
"Because of him", Fury pointed at Thor.
"Me?" The Norse god blinked.
"Last year Earth had a visitor from another planet who had a grudge match that levelled a small town. We learned that not only are we not alone. But we are hopelessly, hilariously, outgunned".
"My people want nothing but peace with your planet", Thor defended. Fury glared at him.
"But you're not the only people out there are you? And you're not the only threat. The world's filling up with people who can't be matched. That can't be controlled".
"Like you control the cube?" Steve asked.
"And your think you can control these people through fear?" Basil asked with a sarcastic bark of laughter. "That's what hydra wanted too. No countries, not governments, no freedom. Just people to be controlled". He tutted and tilted his head back slightly, eyes narrowing. "Careful Nick. You're not far off from wanting world domination there".
"Your work with the tesseract is what drew Loki and his allies to it in the first place", Thor snapped. "It is a signal to all the realms that the earth is ready for a higher form of war".
"A higher form?" Steve repeated.
"You forced our hand", Fury replied. "We had to come up with something".
"A nuclear deterrent", Tony voiced. "Cause that always calms things right down".
"Remind me again how you made your fortune, Stark?"
"I'm sure if he still made weapons Stark would be neck deep"- Steve began, taking a step forwards.
"Wait hold on", Tony interjected. "How is this now about me?"
"I'm sorry? Isn't everything?" Steve raised an eyebrow.
"I thought humans were more evolved than this", Thor said.
"Normally we are", Basil mumbled through gritted teeth. Anger and frustration bubbling away in his chest. "But fear turns even the most evolved creature into nothing special".
"Excuse me?" Fury snapped. "Did we come to your planet and blow stuff up?" Behind him, Steve and Tony were arguing.
"You treat your champions with such mistrust", Thor huffed.
"Are you boys really that naive?" Nat voiced. "Shield monitors potential threats".
"Captain America's and the Crazy doctor are on threat watch?" Bruce raised and eyebrow and crossed his arms.
"I can't believe they're still calling me that", Basil muttered to himself. "I don't even think my medical degree is worth much nowadays". He sighed and rubbed his fingers into his face in a effort to calm himself down. Around him, everyone was still arguing. He tried to tune it out. As he turned, his gaze fell upon Loki's staff. The sceptre was lying on one of the lab tables, a few cables attached to it. It was a curved thing of gold and silver. The tip coming to two curved blades. A blue jewel pulsed in the middle.
Basil looked at it curiously. "Um, is that supposed to be pulsing like that?" He voiced but no one was listening to him.
"You speak of control yet you court chaos", Thor rolled his eyes.
"That's his M.O. isn't it?" Bruce asked. "I mean. What are we? A team? No. We're a chemical mixture that makes chaos. We're a time bomb".
"Guys. The staff?" Basil tried.
"Why can't the guy let off a little steam", Tony shrugged. He put a hand on Steve's shoulder but the blonde knocked it off.
"You know why. Back off?"
"I'm starting to want you to make me".
"Yeah. Big man in a suit of armour. Take that off and what are you?"
"Genius. Billionaire, playboy, philanthropist". Tony met Steve's stare head on without flinching. Around them the room was silent. Everyone watching the argument with wide eyes. It was like watching a car crash. A disaster waiting to happen. Basil could feel it in the air.
"I know guys with none of that worth ten of you", Steve snarled. "I've seen the footage. The only thing you're really fighting for is yourself. You're not the guy to make the sacrifice play to lay down on a wire and let the other guy crawl over you".
"I think I would just cut the wire".
Steve smirked. "Always a way out. You may not be a threat. But you'd better stop pretending to be a hero".
"Steve!" Basil shouted. He had never known Steve to be so cruel with his words.
"A hero? Like you?" Tony replied. "You're a laboratory experiment. Rogers. The kid there is a better man than you", he gestured to Basil. "Everything special about you came out of a bottle".
Basil gaped. "Put on the suit", Steve stated. "Let's go a few rounds".
Thor laughed. "You people are so petty and tiny".
"Yeah this is a team", Bruce snorted.
"Agent Romanov could you escort Dr Banner back to his"-
"Where?" Bruce asked. "You rented out my room".
"The cell was just in case"- Fury tried to explain.
"In case you needed to kill me. But you can't. I know. I tried", Bruce looked around at them all. "I got low. I didn't see an end. So I put a bullet in my mouth. And the other guy spit it out. So I moved on. I focused on helping other people. I was good. Until you dragged me back into this freak show and put everyone here at risk. You want to know my secret Agent Romanoff? You want to know how I stay calm?"
"Dr Banner", Basil voiced. Bruce turned to him and Basil raised a hand calmly. "Put down the sceptre".
Bruce looked down at the staff in surprise, like he hadn't even realised he had licked it up. For a moment silence filled the lab. It was disturbed by the sharp high pitched beeping of the computer. It was like a spell broke. Bruce turned and put the sceptre down as Fury wandered over to the screen. "Sorry kids. You don't get to see my party trick after all".
"You located the tesseract?" Thor asked.
"I could get there faster!" Tony voiced.
"The tesseract belongs on Asgard. No human is a match for it".
"You're not going alone". Steve caught Tony by his arm.
"You're going to stop me?"
"Put on the suit, let's find out".
"I'm not afraid to hit an old man".
"Put on the suit".
"Boys!" Basil shouted at the two of them. "You're both pretty men with big egos. Both of you go for fucks sake before I decide to use you as target practise for my knives". Steve winced at the memory and Basil smirked.
At the computer, Bruce took off his glasses. "Oh my god".
That was when something exploded and threw them all off their feet.
